The ABC130 barrel module prototyping programme for the ATLAS strip tracker

For the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector, its Inner Detector, consisting of silicon pixel, silicon strip and transition radiation sub-detectors, will be replaced with an all new 100 % silicon tracker, composed of a pixel tracker at inner radii and a strip tracker at outer radii. The future ATLAS strip tracker will include 11,000 silicon sensor modules in the central region (barrel) and 7,000 modules in the forward region (end-caps), which are foreseen to be constructed over a period of 3.5 years. The construction of each module consists of a series of assembly and quality control steps, which were engineered to be identical for all production sites. In order to develop the tooling and procedures for assembly and testing of these modules, two series of major prototyping programs were conducted: an early program using readout chips designed using a 250 nm fabrication process (ABCN-25) and a subsequent program using a follow-up chip set made using 130 nm processing (ABC130 and HCC130 chips). This second generation of readout chips was used for an extensive prototyping program that produced around 100 barrel-type modules and contributed significantly to the development of the final module layout. This paper gives an overview of the components used in ABC130 barrel modules, their assembly procedure and findings resulting from their tests.Comment: 82 pages, 66 figure

    High-Voltage Multiplexing for ATLAS ITk

    No full text
The High Luminosity upgrade to the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) requires a replacement of the present ATLAS inner tracker with an all-silicon inner tracker (ITk). The outer radii of the ITk will consist of groups of silicon strip sensors mounted on common support structures. Lack of space for additional cabling will require groups of sensors to share a common HV bus (-500 V). This creates a need to remotely disable a failing sensor from the common HV bus to permit continued operation of the other sensors. We have developed circuitry consisting of a Gallium Nitride Field-Effect transistor (GaNFET) and a HV Multiplier circuit to disable a failed sensor. The devices have been shown to survive radiation doses as high as 1 x 1016 neutrons/cm2 and ionizing doses over 200 Mrad. We will present the HV Mux circuitry and show irradiation results on individual components with an emphasis on the GaNFET results with neutrons, protons, pions, and gammas. We will present a dual-stage variation of the HV Mux that will permit operation to -700 V as this voltage may become a final requirement for the strip detector. We will also discuss the reliability of the HV Mux circuitry and show plans to ensure reliability during production

Antibiotic use and potential economic impact of implementing selective dry cow therapy in large US dairies

In this study, our objectives were to evaluate the economic feasibility of implementing selective dry cow therapy (SDCT) in large US herds and to estimate the potential reduction in antibiotic use around the dry period if SDCT management is adopted. Cow-level data were obtained from the Dairy Herd Improvement Association (AgriTech, Visalia, CA) and individual dairy herds in California. Logistic regression models were used to predict the incidence risk of subclinical and clinical mastitis in the subsequent lactation for 96 last test-day somatic cell score categories. Linear programming was used to optimize the costs of dry cow therapy in 3 simulated large US dairy herds with different bulk tank somatic cell counts (BTSCC). The objective function was aimed at minimization of the total cost of mastitis around the dry period (TCMD), under a varying constraint of the maximum percentage of cows dried off with antibiotics. A sensitivity analysis was performed on milk price, dry-off antibiotic price, and risk ratio of mastitis in the subsequent lactation when no antibiotics and only teat sealant was used at dry-off. For all situations, blanket dry cow therapy was more expensive than SDCT. In a herd with medium BTSCC, the TCMD was 54.7perprimiparousdrycowand54.7 per primiparous dry cow and 58.5 per multiparous dry cow annually. In the optimal economic situation where SDCT was used, only 30% of primiparous cows received antibiotics, leading to a TCMD of 52.4perprimiparousdrycow,whereas8852.4 per primiparous dry cow, whereas 88% of multiparous cows received antibiotics, at a cost of 58.2 per multiparous dry cow. This corresponded with an overall reduction of 29% in the use of antibiotics around the dry period in a conservative scenario. This study showed that it is economically feasible to reduce antibiotic use associated with dry cow therapy in large US dairy herds. This contributes to the efforts of reducing antibiotic use worldwide.</p

Investigation of the impact of mechanical stress on the properties of silicon strip sensors

    No full text
The new ATLAS tracker for phase II will be composed of silicon pixel and strip sensor modules. The strip sensor module consists of silicon sensors, boards and readout chips. Adhesives are used to connect the modular components thermally and mechanically. It was shown that the silicon sensor is exposed to mechanical stress, due to temperature difference between construction and operation. Mechanical stress can damage the sensor and can change the electrical properties. The thermal induced tensile stress near to the surface of a silicon sensor in a module was simulated and the results are compared to a cooled module. A four point bending setup was used to measure the maximum tensile stress of silicon detectors and to verify the piezoresistive effects on two recent development sensor types used in ATLAS (ATLAS07 and ATLAS12). Changes in the interstrip, bulk and bias resistance and capacitance as well as the coupling capacitance and the implant resistance were measured. The Leakage current was observed to decrease by bending. The surface and bias resistance was measured to increase for tensile stress along the strip direction and compressive stress perpendicular to the strip direction. These changes influence the noise which are quantified in signal measurements with a beta source
