    Renormalization factor and effective mass of the two-dimensional electron gas

    We calculate the momentum distribution of the Fermi liquid phase of the homogeneous, two-dimensional electron gas. We show that, close to the Fermi surface, the momentum distribution of a finite system with NN electrons approaches its thermodynamic limit slowly, with leading order corrections scaling as N−1/4N^{-1/4}. These corrections dominate the extrapolation of the renormalization factor, ZZ, and the single particle effective mass, m∗m^*, to the infinite system size. We show how convergence can be improved analytically. In the range 1≀rs≀101 \le r_s \le 10, we get a lower renormalization factor ZZ and a higher effective mass, m∗>mm^*>m, compared to the perturbative RPA values.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Guideline-directed medical therapy for secondary prevention after coronary artery bypass grafting in patients with depression

    AbstractBackgroundWe hypothesized that depressed patients would have lower use of guideline-directed medical therapy for secondary prevention of cardiovascular events following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).MethodsWe included all patients who underwent primary isolated CABG in Sweden between 2006 and 2008. We cross-linked individual level data from national Swedish registers. Preoperative depression was defined as at least one antidepressant prescription dispensed before surgery. We defined medication use as at least two dispensed prescriptions in each medication class (antiplatelet agents, beta-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI)/angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and statins) within a rolling 12 month period. We calculated adjusted risk ratios (RR) for the use of each medication class, and for all four classes, after one and four years, respectively.ResultsDuring the first year after CABG, 93% of all patients (n = 10,586) had at least two dispensed prescriptions for an antiplatelet agent, 68% for an ACEI/ARB, 91% for a beta-blocker, and 92% for a statin. 57% had prescriptions for all four medication classes. After four years (n = 4034), 44% had filled prescriptions for all four medication classes. Preoperative depression was not significantly associated with a lower use of all four medication classes after one year (RR 0.98, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.93–1.03) or after four years (RR 0.97, 95% CI 0.86–1.09).ConclusionsPreoperative depression was not associated with lower use of guideline-directed medical therapy for secondary prevention after CABG. These findings suggest that the observed higher mortality following CABG among depressed patients is not explained by inadequate secondary prevention medication

    Enhanced differentiation of human embryonic stem cells towards definitive endoderm on ultrahigh aspect ratio nanopillars

    Differentiation of human embryonic stem cells is widely studied as a potential unlimited source for cell replacement therapy to treat degenerative diseases such as diabetes. The directed differentiation of human embryonic stem cells relies mainly on soluble factors. Although, some studies have highlighted that the properties of the physical environment, such as substrate stiffness, affect cellular behavior. Here, mass-produced, injection molded polycarbonate nanopillars are presented, where the surface mechanical properties, i.e., stiffness, can be controlled by the geometric design of the ultrahigh aspect ratio nanopillars (stiffness can be reduced by 25.0003). It is found that tall nanopillars, yielding softer surfaces, significantly enhance the induction of definitive endoderm cells from pluripotent human embryonic stem cells, resulting in more consistent differentiation of a pure population compared to planar control. By contrast, further differentiation toward the pancreatic ­endoderm is less successful on “soft” pillars when compared to “stiff” pillars or control, indicating differential cues during the different stages of differentiation. To accompany the mechanical properties of the nanopillars, the concept of surface shear modulus is introduced to describe the characteristics of engineered elastic surfaces through micro or nanopatterning. This provides a framework whereby comparisons can be drawn between such materials and bulk elastomeric materials

    The Finite Size Error in Many-body Simulations with long-Ranged Interactions

    We discuss the origin of the finite size error of the energy in many-body simulation of systems of charged particles and we propose a correction based on the random phase approximation at long wave lengths. The correction comes from contributions mainly determined by the organized collective oscillations of the interacting system. Finite size corrections, both on kinetic and potential energy, can be calculated within a single simulation.     Undetectable High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin T Level in the Emergency Department and Risk of Myocardial Infarction

    ObjectivesThis study sought to evaluate if an undetectable (<5 ng/l) high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) level and an electrocardiogram (ECG) without signs of ischemia can rule out myocardial infarction (MI) in the emergency department (ED).BackgroundChest pain is a common symptom often associated with benign conditions, but may be a sign of MI. Because there is no rapid way to rule out MI, many patients are admitted to the hospital.MethodsAll patients who sought medical attention for chest pain and had at least 1 hs-cTnT analyzed during 2 years at the Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, were included. We calculated the negative predictive values of an undetectable hs-cTnT and ECG without ischemia for MI and death within 30 days.ResultsWe included 14,636 patients, of whom 8,907 (61%) had an initial hs-cTnT of <5 ng/l; 21% had 5 to 14 ng/l, and 18% had >14 ng/l. During 30-day follow-up, 39 (0.44%) patients with undetectable hs-cTnT had a MI, of whom 15 (0.17%) had no ischemic ECG changes. The negative predictive value for MI within 30 days in patients with undetectable hs-cTnT and no ischemic ECG changes was 99.8% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 99.7 to 99.9). The negative predictive value for death was 100% (95% CI: 99.9 to 100).ConclusionsAll patients with chest pain who have an initial hs-cTnT level of <5 ng/l and no signs of ischemia on an ECG have a minimal risk of MI or death within 30 days, and can be safely discharged directly from the ED

    Trial wave functions for High-Pressure Metallic Hydrogen

    Many body trial wave functions are the key ingredient for accurate Quantum Monte Carlo estimates of total electronic energies in many electron systems. In the Coupled Electron-Ion Monte Carlo method, the accuracy of the trial function must be conjugated with the efficiency of its evaluation. We report recent progress in trial wave functions for metallic hydrogen implemented in the Coupled Electron-Ion Monte Carlo method. We describe and characterize several types of trial functions of increasing complexity in the range of the coupling parameter 1.0≀rs≀1.551.0 \leq r_s \leq1.55.     Developmental nasal midline masses in children: neuroradiological evaluation

    Developmental nasal midline masses in children are rare lesions. Neuroimaging is essential to characterise these lesions, to determine the exact location of the lesion and most importantly to exclude a possible intracranial extension or connection. Our objective was to evaluate CT and MRI in the diagnosis of developmental nasal midline masses. Eleven patients (mean age 4.5years) with nasal midline masses were examined by CT and MRI. Neuroimaging was evaluated for (a) lesion location/size, (b) indirect (bifid or deformed crista galli, widened foramen caecum, defect of the cribriform plate) and direct (identification of intracranially located lesion components or signal alterations) imaging signs of intracranial extension, (c) secondary complications and (d) associated malformations. Surgical and histological findings served as gold standard. Nasal dermoid sinus cysts were diagnosed in 9 patients. One patient was diagnosed with an meningocele and another patient with a nasal glioma. Indirect CT and MRI signs correlated with the surgical results in 10 of 11 patients. Direct CT findings correlated with surgery in all patients, whereas the direct MRI signs correlated in 9 of 11 patients. In 2 patients MRI showed an intracranial signal alteration not seen on CT. Neuroimaging corrected the clinical diagnosis in 1 patient. One child presented with a meningitis. In none of the patients was an associated malformation diagnosed. Intracranial extension is equally well detected by CT and MRI using indirect imaging signs. Evaluating the direct imaging signs, MRI suspected intracranial components in 2 patients without a correlate on CT. This could represent an isolated intracranial component that got undetected on CT and surgery. In 9 patients CT and MRI matched the surgical findings. The MRI did not show any false-negative results. These results in combination with the multiplanar MRI capabilities, the different image contrasts that can be generated by MRI and the lack of radiation favour the use of MRI as primary imaging tool in these young patients in which the region of imaging is usually centred on the radiosensitive eye lense

    Collagen Type I Improves the Differentiation of Human Embryonic Stem Cells towards Definitive Endoderm

    Human embryonic stem cells have the ability to generate all cell types in the body and can potentially provide an unlimited source of cells for cell replacement therapy to treat degenerative diseases such as diabetes. Current differentiation protocols of human embryonic stem cells towards insulin producing beta cells focus on soluble molecules whereas the impact of cell-matrix interactions has been mainly unattended. In this study almost 500 different extracellular matrix protein combinations were screened to systemically identify extracellular matrix proteins that influence differentiation of human embryonic stem cells to the definitive endoderm lineage. The percentage of definitive endoderm cells after differentiation on collagen I and fibronectin was >85% and 65%, respectively. The cells on collagen I substrates displayed different morphology and gene expression during differentiation as assessed by time lapse studies compared to cells on the other tested substrates. Global gene expression analysis showed that cells differentiated on collagen I were largely similar to cells on fibronectin after completed differentiation. Collectively, the data suggest that collagen I induces a more rapid and consistent differentiation of stem cells to definitive endoderm. The results shed light on the importance of extracellular matrix proteins for differentiation and also points to a cost effective and easy method to improve differentiation
