Swine Veterinary Internship Program: Enhancing the Value of the Veterinary Internship

    Get PDF
The Swine Veterinary Internship Program (SVIP) at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine (ISU CVM) was developed and implemented to provide students an opportunity to obtain swine specific skills and knowledge that complements the veterinary curriculum early in their veterinary education, to learn how to conduct field research, and communicate the results in written and oral forms. The expertise obtained from the program makes students more attractive to future employers and more likely to exceed in their careers

Lekker: rot of vers? de fruitvlieg als fijnproever, een statistische analyse

    Get PDF

Complex Faulting and Triggered Rupture During the 2018 MW 7.9 Offshore Kodiak, Alaska, Earthquake

We combine aftershock relocations, source mechanisms, teleseismic P wave backprojection, and Global Positioning System data inversion to constrain complex faulting geometry of the 2018 MW 7.9 offshore Kodiak earthquake. Relocated aftershocks delineate several Nā€S trends including a prominent 110ā€kmā€long segment, as well as broad NEā€SW trends. Global Positioning System modeling and backprojection indicate that the NEā€SW trending leftā€lateral strikeā€slip segments released most energy dominating farā€field crustal deformation and radiated wavefield. Backprojection infers fast Eā€toā€W rupture propagations superimposed on a slower Sā€toā€N migration. We propose a fiveā€segment model of the rupture that was partially driven by dynamic triggering

Free Rota-Baxter algebras and rooted trees

A Rota-Baxter algebra, also known as a Baxter algebra, is an algebra with a linear operator satisfying a relation, called the Rota-Baxter relation, that generalizes the integration by parts formula. Most of the studies on Rota-Baxter algebras have been for commutative algebras. Two constructions of free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras were obtained by Rota and Cartier in the 1970s and a third one by Keigher and one of the authors in the 1990s in terms of mixable shuffles. Recently, noncommutative Rota-Baxter algebras have appeared both in physics in connection with the work of Connes and Kreimer on renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory, and in mathematics related to the work of Loday and Ronco on dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras. This paper uses rooted trees and forests to give explicit constructions of free noncommutative Rota--Baxter algebras on modules and sets. This highlights the combinatorial nature of Rota--Baxter algebras and facilitates their further study. As an application, we obtain the unitarization of Rota-Baxter algebras.Comment: 23 page

Federated Searching Interface Techniques for Heterogeneous OAI Repositories

    Get PDF
Federating repositories by harvesting heterogeneous collections with varying degrees of metadata richness poses a number of challenging issues: (1) how to address the lack of uniform control for various metadata fields in terms of building a rich unified search interface, and (2) how easily new collections and freshly harvested data in existing repositories can be incorporated into the federation supporting a unified interface? This paper focuses on the approaches taken to address these issues in Arc, an Open Archives Initiative compliant federated digital library. At present Arc contains over 1M metadata records from 75 data providers from various subject domains. Analysis of these heterogeneous collections indicates that controlled vocabularies and values are widely used in most repositories. Usage is extremely variable, however. In Arc we solve the problem by implementing an advanced searching interface that allows users to search and select in specific fields with data we construct from the harvested metadata, and also by an interactive search for the subject field. As the metadata records are incrementally harvested we address how to build these services over frequently added new collections and harvested data. The initial result is promising, showing the benefits of immediate feedback to the user in enhancing the search experience as well as in increasing the precision of the user\u27s search

Hypofractionated or Conventionally Fractionated Adjuvant Radiotherapy After Regional Lymph Node Dissection for High-Risk Stage III Melanoma

Aims: Adjuvant radiotherapy can be beneficial after regional lymph node dissection for high-risk stage III melanoma, as it has been shown to reduce the risk of recurrence in the node field. However, the optimal fractionation schedule is unknown and both hypofractionated and conventionally fractionated adjuvant radiotherapy are used. The present study examined the oncological outcomes of these two approaches in patients treated in an era before effective systemic immunotherapy became available. Materials and methods: This retrospective cohort study involved 335 patients with stage III melanoma who received adjuvant radiotherapy after therapeutic regional lymph node dissection for metastatic melanoma between 1990 and 2011. Information on tumour characteristics, radiotherapy doses and fractionation schedules and patient outcomes was retrieved from the institution's database and patients' medical records. Results: Hypofractionated radiotherapy (median dose 33 Gy in six fractions over 3 weeks) was given to 95 patients (28%) and conventionally fractionated radiotherapy (median dose 48 Gy in 20 fractions over 4 weeks) to 240 patients (72%). Five-year lymph node field control rates were 86.0% (95% confidence interval 78.4ā€“94.4%) for the hypofractionated group and 85.5% (95% confidence interval 80.5ā€“90.7%) for the conventional fractionation group (P = 0.87). There were no significant differences in recurrence-free survival (RFS) (41.7%, 95% confidence interval 32.5ā€“53.5 versus 31.9%, 95% confidence interval 26.1ā€“38.9; P = 0.18) or overall survival (41.2%, 95% confidence interval 32.1ā€“52.8 versus 45.0%, 95% confidence interval 38.7ā€“52.4; P = 0.77). On multivariate analysis, extranodal spread was associated with decreased RFS (P = 0.04) and the number of resected lymph nodes containing metastatic melanoma was associated with decreased RFS (P = 0.0006) and overall survival (P = 0.01). Conclusion: Lymph node field control rates, RFS and overall survival were similar after hypofractionated and conventionally fractionated adjuvant radiotherapy. The presence of extranodal spread and an increasing number of positive lymph nodes were predictive of an unfavourable outcome

The 4q12 Amplicon in Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors: Consequences on Gene Expression and Implications for Sunitinib Treatment

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) are highly aggressive tumors which originate from Schwann cells and develop in about 10% of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) patients. The five year survival rate is poor and more effective therapies are needed. Sunitinib is a drug targeting receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK) like PDGFRĪ±, c-Kit and VEGFR-2. These genes are structurally related and cluster on chromosomal segment 4q12.) was present in MPNST cell lines suggesting an autocrine loop. We show that VEGF triggered signal transduction via the MAPK pathway, which could be blocked by sunitinib. might serve as predictive markers for efficacy of sunitinib
