Resonances in radiative hyperon decays
The importance of resonances for the radiative hyperon decays is examined in
the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Low lying baryon resonances are
included into the effective theory and tree contributions to these decays are
calculated. We find significant contributions to both the parity-conserving and
parity-violating decay amplitudes and a large negative value for the asymmetry
parameter in polarized Sigma^+ -> p gamma is found, in agreement with the
experimental result alpha(p Sigma^+) = -0.76 +/- 0.08.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure
Polaron formation for a non-local electron-phonon coupling: A variational wave-function study
We introduce a variational wave-function to study the polaron formation when
the electronic transfer integral depends on the relative displacement between
nearest-neighbor sites giving rise to a non-local electron-phonon coupling with
optical phonon modes. We analyze the ground state properties such as the
energy, the electron-lattice correlation function, the phonon number and the
spectral weight. Variational results are found in good agreement with analytic
weak-coupling perturbative calculations and exact numerical diagonalization of
small clusters. We determine the polaronic phase diagram and we find that the
tendency towards strong localization is hindered from the pathological sign
change of the effective next-nearest-neighbor hopping.Comment: 11 page
Holstein polarons in a strong electric field: delocalized and stretched states
The coherent dynamics of a Holstein polaron in strong electric fields is
considered under different regimes. Using analytical and numerical analysis, we
show that even for small hopping constant and weak electron-phonon interaction,
the original discrete Wannier-Stark (WS) ladder electronic states are each
replaced by a semi-continuous band if a resonance condition is satisfied
between the phonon frequency and the ladder spacing. In this regime, the
original localized WS states can become {\em delocalized}, yielding both
`tunneling' and `stretched' polarons. The transport properties of such a system
would exhibit a modulation of the phonon replicas in typical tunneling
experiments. The modulation will reflect the complex spectra with
nearly-fractal structure of the semi-continuous band. In the off-resonance
regime, the WS ladder is strongly deformed, although the states are still
localized to a degree which depends on the detuning: Both the spacing between
the levels in the deformed ladder and the localization length of the resulting
eigenfunctions can be adjusted by the applied electric field. We also discuss
the regime beyond small hopping constant and weak coupling, and find an
interesting mapping to that limit via the Lang-Firsov transformation, which

On the effects of the magnetic field and the isotopic substitution upon the infrared absorption of manganites
Employing a variational approach that takes into account electron-phonon and
magnetic interactions in perovskites with , the
effects of the magnetic field and the oxygen isotope substitution on the phase
diagram, the electron-phonon correlation function and the infrared absorption
at are studied. The lattice displacements show a strong correlation
with the conductivity and the magnetic properties of the system. Then the
conductivity spectra are characterized by a marked sensitivity to the external
parameters near the phase boundary.Comment: 10 figure
Electroweak Radiative Corrections to Parity-Violating Electroexcitation of the
We analyze the degree to which parity-violating (PV) electroexcitation of the
resonance may be used to extract the weak neutral axial vector
transition form factors. We find that the axial vector electroweak radiative
corrections are large and theoretically uncertain, thereby modifying the
nominal interpretation of the PV asymmetry in terms of the weak neutral form
factors. We also show that, in contrast to the situation for elastic electron
scattering, the axial PV asymmetry does not vanish at the photon
point as a consequence of a new term entering the radiative corrections. We
argue that an experimental determination of these radiative corrections would
be of interest for hadron structure theory, possibly shedding light on the
violation of Hara's theorem in weak, radiative hyperon decays.Comment: RevTex, 76 page
Radiative corrections to radiative \pi e 2 decay
The lowest order radiative corrections (RC) to width and spectra of radiative
decay are calculated. We take into account virtual photon emission
contribution as well as soft and hard real photon emission one. The result
turns out to be consistent with the standard Drell-Yan picture for the width
and spectra in the leading logarithmical approximation which permits us to
generalize it to all orders of perturbation theory. Explicit expressions of
nonleading contributions are obtained. The contribution of short distance is
found to be in agreement with Standard Model predictions. It is presented as a
general normalization factor. We check the validity of the
Kinoshita-Lee-Nauenberg theorem about cancellation in the total width of the
mass singularities at zero limit of electron mass. We discuss the results of
the previous papers devoted to this problem. The Dalitz plot distribution is

Quantum corrections for spinning particles in de Sitter
We compute the one-loop quantum corrections to the gravitational potentials of a spinning point particle in a de Sitter background, due to the vacuum polarisation induced by conformal fields in an effective field theory approach. We consider arbitrary conformal field theories, assuming only that the theory contains a large number N of fields in order to separate their contribution from the one induced by virtual gravitons. The corrections are described in a gauge-invariant way, classifying the induced metric perturbations around the de Sitter background according to their behaviour under transformations on equal-time hypersurfaces. There are six gauge-invariant modes: two scalar Bardeen potentials, one transverse vector and one transverse traceless tensor, of which one scalar and the vector couple to the spinning particle. The quantum corrections consist of three different parts: a generalisation of the flat-space correction, which is only significant at distances of the order of the Planck length; a constant correction depending on the undetermined parameters of the renormalised effective action; and a term which grows logarithmically with the distance from the particle. This last term is the most interesting, and when resummed gives a modified power law, enhancing the gravitational force at large distances. As a check on the accuracy of our calculation, we recover the linearised Kerr-de Sitter metric in the classical limit and the flat-space quantum correction in the limit of vanishing Hubble constant
They are all 'doing gender' but are they are all passing? A case study of the appropriation of a sociological concept
The concept of 'doing gender' was placed on the sociological agenda by West and Zimmerman. In their seminal paper published in 1987, they provided a systematic theory of gender as a routine and ongoing process and outlined a distinctly ethnomethodological approach to investigating how gender is enacted, understood and rendered accountable. West and Zimmerman's notion of 'doing gender' has subsequently become a central concept in many fields of sociological research, however, upon closer examination although many authors claim to be using the concept - in effect to be doing 'doing gender' - the concept's intellectual roots in ethnomethodology are not always recognised or reflected: in short not all are passing. The purpose of our study is to explore the career trajectory of this concept and to systematically assess the manner in which 'doing' has been employed. From a review of 226 journal articles, books, dissertations and association papers, we provide an overview of the uses of this construct and examine the ways in which 'doing gender' has been assimilated into current theoretical and methodological practice
