Modelling Interdependent Cascading Failures in Real World Complex Networks using a Functional Dependency Model
Infrastructure systems are becoming increasingly complex and interdependent. As a result our ability to predict the
likelihood of large-scale failure of these systems has significantly diminished and the consequence of this is that we
now have a greatly increased risk of devastating impacts to society.
Traditionally these systems have been analysed using physically-based models. However, this approach can only
provide information for a specific network and is limited by the number of scenarios that can be tested. In an attempt
to overcome this shortcoming, many studies have used network graph theory to provide an alternative analysis
approach. This approach has tended to consider infrastructure systems in isolation, but has recently considered
the analysis of interdependent networks through combination with percolation theory. However, these studies have
focused on the analysis of synthetic networks and tend to only consider the topology of the system.
In this paper we develop a new analysis approach, based upon network theory, but accounting for the hierarchical
structure and functional dependency observed in real world infrastructure networks. We apply this method to two
real world networks, to show that it can be used to quantify the impact that failures within an electricity network have
upon a dependent water network

Manufacturing method and performance assessment for variable lead vacuum rotors
In recent years variable lead rotors have been produced, mainly for vacuum applications, involving a multiple pass manufacturing process which is necessarily time-consuming. A faster method of manufacturing such rotors uses a full profiled disc-type milling or grinding tool but involves clearance variations along the length. These effects have been assessed by computer modelling to quantify any disadvantages. The results indicate that the effects on performance are negligible and the profiled disk tool process is suitable for such components
Lung lobe torsion in adult and juvenile pugs
This cases series of 13 pugs with lung lobe torsion (LLT) is the largest case series of pugs in the literature and the first to compare dogs presenting before and after 12 months of age. Similar to previous case series, the median age of pugs with LLT was 17 months; however six dogs were under 12 months of age (3 of 13 were 11–13 weeks at presentation). There were no differences between the dogs that presented younger or older than 12 months old with respect to sex, neuter status, lung lobe affected, duration and nature of clinical signs, time alive after discharge, and complications. The juvenile onset may suggest that some dogs are inherently at risk of LLT. This is intriguing and important as LLT may not be an intuitive diagnosis in a juvenile brachycephalic animal, and practitioners should be aware of this unusual presentation

Trace gas assimilation of Mars orbiter observations
Ozone, water vapour and argon are minor constituents in the Martian atmosphere, observations of which can be of use in constraining atmospheric dynamical and physical processes. This is especially true in the winter season of each hemisphere, when the bulk of the main constituent in the atmosphere (CO2 ) condenses in the polar regions shifting the balance of atmospheric composition to a more trace gas rich air mass.
Current Mars Global Circulation Models (MGCMs) are able to represent the photochemistry occuring in the atmosphere, with constraints being imposed by comparisons with observations. However, a long term comparison using data assimilation provides a more robust constraint on the model. We aim to provide a technique for trace gas data assimilation for the analysis of observations from current and future satellite missions (such as ExoMars) which observe the spatial and temporal distribution of trace gases on Mars
