Catalytic carbon dioxide reduction cartridge for oxygen recovery in life support systems of long term manned space flight
Bosch CO2 Reduction System Development
Development of a Bosch process CO2 reduction unit was continued, and, by means of hardware modifications, the performance was substantially improved. Benefits of the hardware upgrading were demonstrated by extensive unit operation and data acquisition in the laboratory. This work was accomplished on a cold seal configuration of the Bosch unit
Wolf-Rayets in IC10: Probing the Nearest Starburst
IC10 is the nearest starburst galaxy, as revealed both by its Halpha surface
brightness and the large number of Wolf-Rayet stars (WRs) per unit area. The
relative number of known WC- to WN-type WRs has been thought to be unusually
high (~2), unexpected for IC10's metallicity. In this Letter we report the
first results of a new and deeper survey for WRs in IC10. We sucessfully
detected all of the spectroscopically known WRs, and based upon comparisons
with a neighboring control field, estimate that the total number of WRs in IC10
is about 100. We present spectroscopic confirmation of two of our WR
candidates, both of which are of WN type. Our photometric survey predicts that
the actual WC/WN ratio is ~0.3. This makes the WC/WN ratio of IC 10 consistent
with that expected for its metallicity, but greatly increases the already
unusually high number of WRs, resulting in a surface density that is about 20
times higher than in the LMC. If the majority of these candidates are
spectroscopically confirmed, IC10 must have an exceptional population of high
mass stars.Comment: Accepted by ApJL; only minor correction in this versio
Propagation of highly nonlinear signals in a two dimensional network of granular chains
We report the first experimental observation of highly nonlinear signals propagating in a two dimensional system composed of granular chains. In this system one of the chains contacts two others to allow splitting and redirecting the solitary-like signal formed in the first chain. The system consists of a double Y-shaped guide in which high- and low-modulus chains of spheres are arranged in various geometries. We observed fast splitting of the initial pulse, rapid chaotization of the signal and sharp bending of the propagating acoustic information. Pulse and energy trapping was also observed in composite systems assembled from hard- and soft-particles in the branches
Atlantic Ocean Heat Transport Enabled by Indo-Pacific Heat Uptake and Mixing
The ocean transports vast amounts of heat around the planet, helping to regulate regional climate. One important component of this heat transport is the movement of warm water from equatorial regions toward the poles, with colder water flowing in return. Here, we introduce a framework relating meridional heat transport to the diabatic processes of surface forcing and turbulent mixing that move heat across temperature classes. Applied to a (1/4)° global ocean model the framework highlights the role of the tropical Indo‐Pacific in the global ocean heat transport. A large fraction of the northward heat transport in the Atlantic is ultimately sourced from heat uptake in the eastern tropical Pacific. Turbulent mixing moves heat from the warm, shallow Indo‐Pacific circulation to the cold deeper‐reaching Atlantic circulation. Our results underscore a renewed focus on the tropical oceans and their role in global circulation pathways
Quantum and classical chaos for a single trapped ion
In this paper we investigate the quantum and classical dynamics of a single
trapped ion subject to nonlinear kicks derived from a periodic sequence of
Guassian laser pulses. We show that the classical system exhibits diffusive
growth in the energy, or 'heating', while quantum mechanics suppresses this
heating. This system may be realized in current single trapped-ion experiments
with the addition of near-field optics to introduce tightly focussed laser
pulses into the trap.Comment: 8 pages, REVTEX, 8 figure
Apollo experience report: Development of guidance targeting techniques for the command module and launch vehicle
The development of the guidance targeting techniques for the Apollo command module and launch vehicle is discussed for four types of maneuvers: (1) translunar injection, (2) translunar midcourse, (3) lunar orbit insertion, and (4) return to earth. The development of real-time targeting programs for these maneuvers and the targeting procedures represented are discussed. The material is intended to convey historically the development of the targeting techniques required to meet the defined target objectives and to illustrate the solutions to problems encountered during that development
Jamming transitions in a schematic model of suspension rheology
We study the steady-state response to applied stress in a simple scalar model
of sheared colloids. Our model is based on a schematic (F2) model of the glass
transition, with a memory term that depends on both stress and shear rate. For
suitable parameters, we find transitions from a fluid to a nonergodic, jammed
state, showing zero flow rate in an interval of applied stress. Although the
jammed state is a glass, we predict that jamming transitions have an analytical
structure distinct from that of the conventional mode coupling glass
transition. The static jamming transition we discuss is also distinct from
hydrodynamic shear thickening.Comment: 7 pages; 3 figures; improved version with added references. Accepted

Quantum signatures of chaos in the dynamics of a trapped ion
We show how a nonlinear chaotic system, the parametrically kicked nonlinear
oscillator, may be realised in the dynamics of a trapped, laser-cooled ion,
interacting with a sequence of standing wave pulses. Unlike the original
optical scheme [G.J.Milburn and C.A.Holmes, Phys. Rev A, 44, p4704, (1991)],
the trapped ion enables strongly quantum dynamics with minimal dissipation.
This should permit an experimental test of one of the quantum signatures of
chaos; irregular collapse and revival dynamics of the average vibrational
energy.Comment: 9 pages, 9 Postscript figures, Revtex, submitted to Phys. Rev.
