Conditions for Successful Extended Inflation
We investigate, in a model-independent way, the conditions required to obtain
a satisfactory model of extended inflation in which inflation is brought to an
end by a first-order phase transition. The constraints are that the correct
present strength of the gravitational coupling is obtained, that the present
theory of gravity is satisfactorily close to general relativity, that the
perturbation spectra from inflation are compatible with large scale structure
observations and that the bubble spectrum produced at the phase transition
doesn't conflict with the observed level of microwave background anisotropies.
We demonstrate that these constraints can be summarized in terms of the
behaviour in the conformally related Einstein frame, and can be compactly
illustrated graphically. We confirm the failure of existing models including
the original extended inflation model, and construct models, albeit rather
contrived ones, which satisfy all existing constraints.Comment: 8 pages RevTeX file with one figure incorporated (uses RevTeX and

A New WIMP Population in the Solar System and New Signals for Dark-Matter Detectors
We describe in detail how perturbations due to the planets can cause a
sub-population of WIMPs captured by scattering in surface layers of the Sun to
evolve to have orbits which no longer intersect the Sun. We argue that such
WIMPs, if their orbit has a semi-major axis less than 1/2 of Jupiter's, can
persist in the solar system for cosmological timescales. This leads to a new,
previously unanticipated WIMP population intersecting the Earth's orbit. The
WIMP-nucleon cross sections required for this population to be significant are
precisely those in the range predicted for SUSY dark matter, lying near the
present limits obtained by direct underground dark matter searches using
cyrogenic detectors. Thus, if a WIMP signal is observed in the next generation
of detectors, a potentially measurable signal due to this new population must
exist. This signal, lying in the keV range for Germanium detectors, would be
complementary to that of galactic halo WIMPs. A comparison of event rates,
anisotropies, and annual modulations would not only yield additional
confirmation that any claimed signal is indeed WIMP-based, but would also allow
one to gain information on the nature of the underlying dark matter model.Comment: Revtex, 37 pages including 6 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev D.

Planck-Scale Physics and Neutrino Masses
We discuss gravitationally induced masses and mass splittings of Majorana,
Zeldovich-Konopinski-Mahmoud and Dirac neutrinos. Among other implications,
these effects can provide a solution of the solar neutrino puzzle. In
particular, we show how this may work in the 17 keV neutrino picture.Comment: 10 pages, IC/92/79, SISSA-83/92/EP, LMU-04/92 (the preprint number

Seriation and Multidimensional Scaling: A Data Analysis Approach to Scaling Asymmetric Proximity Matrices
A number of model-based scaling methods have been developed that apply to asymmetric proximity matrices. A flexible data analysis approach is pro posed that combines two psychometric procedures— seriation and multidimensional scaling (MDS). The method uses seriation to define an empirical order ing of the stimuli, and then uses MDS to scale the two separate triangles of the proximity matrix defined by this ordering. The MDS solution con tains directed distances, which define an "extra" dimension that would not otherwise be portrayed, because the dimension comes from relations between the two triangles rather than within triangles. The method is particularly appropriate for the analysis of proximities containing temporal information. A major difficulty is the computa tional intensity of existing seriation algorithms, which is handled by defining a nonmetric seriation algorithm that requires only one complete itera tion. The procedure is illustrated using a matrix of co-citations between recent presidents of the Psychometric Society.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
Gravitino constraints on models of neutrino masses and leptogenesis
In the supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, neutrino masses and
leptogenesis requires existence of new particles. We point out that if these
particles with lepton number violating interactions have standard model gauge
interactions, then they may not be created after reheating because of the
gravitino problem. This will rule out all existing models of neutrino masses
and leptogenesis, except the one with right-handed singlet neutrinos.Comment: 12 pages latex file with one postscript figur
On Physical Equivalence between Nonlinear Gravity Theories
We argue that in a nonlinear gravity theory, which according to well-known
results is dynamically equivalent to a self-gravitating scalar field in General
Relativity, the true physical variables are exactly those which describe the
equivalent general-relativistic model (these variables are known as Einstein
frame). Whenever such variables cannot be defined, there are strong indications
that the original theory is unphysical. We explicitly show how to map, in the
presence of matter, the Jordan frame to the Einstein one and backwards. We
study energetics for asymptotically flat solutions. This is based on the
second-order dynamics obtained, without changing the metric, by the use of a
Helmholtz Lagrangian. We prove for a large class of these Lagrangians that the
ADM energy is positive for solutions close to flat space. The proof of this
Positive Energy Theorem relies on the existence of the Einstein frame, since in
the (Helmholtz--)Jordan frame the Dominant Energy Condition does not hold and
the field variables are unrelated to the total energy of the system.Comment: 37 pp., TO-JLL-P 3/93 Dec 199
Gravitational excitons from extra dimensions
Inhomogeneous multidimensional cosmological models with a higher dimensional
space-time manifold are investigated under dimensional reduction. In the
Einstein conformal frame, small excitations of the scale factors of the
internal spaces near minima of an effective potential have a form of massive
scalar fields in the external space-time. Parameters of models which ensure
minima of the effective potentials are obtained for particular cases and masses
of gravitational excitons are estimated.Comment: Revised version --- 12 references added, Introduction enlarged, 20

Gravitational couplings of the inflaton in extended inflation
We discuss a new extended inflationary scenario evading the difficulties of the original model. Our model can thermalize the energy in the bubble walls by the necessary epoch, and establish a Robertson-Walker frame in the bubble clusters. The essential new ingredient in our model is the observation that the coupling of inflaton to the Jordan-Brans-Dicke field is expected to be different from that of visible matter. 13 refs., 1 fig
BINGO: A code for the efficient computation of the scalar bi-spectrum
We present a new and accurate Fortran code, the BI-spectra and
Non-Gaussianity Operator (BINGO), for the efficient numerical computation of
the scalar bi-spectrum and the non-Gaussianity parameter f_{NL} in single field
inflationary models involving the canonical scalar field. The code can
calculate all the different contributions to the bi-spectrum and the parameter
f_{NL} for an arbitrary triangular configuration of the wavevectors. Focusing
firstly on the equilateral limit, we illustrate the accuracy of BINGO by
comparing the results from the code with the spectral dependence of the
bi-spectrum expected in power law inflation. Then, considering an arbitrary
triangular configuration, we contrast the numerical results with the analytical
expression available in the slow roll limit, for, say, the case of the
conventional quadratic potential. Considering a non-trivial scenario involving
deviations from slow roll, we compare the results from the code with the
analytical results that have recently been obtained in the case of the
Starobinsky model in the equilateral limit. As an immediate application, we
utilize BINGO to examine of the power of the non-Gaussianity parameter f_{NL}
to discriminate between various inflationary models that admit departures from
slow roll and lead to similar features in the scalar power spectrum. We close
with a summary and discussion on the implications of the results we obtain.Comment: v1: 5 pages, 5 figures; v2: 35 pages, 11 figures, title changed,
