The decline in circulations and revenues resulting from the digitalization of news production and consumption has led to a crisis in journalism.Journalists have less time to research, investigate and write original stories, leading to problems for our democratic processes and holding the powerful to account. This paper reports the architecture, features and rationale for new digital creativity support designed to support journalists to discover more original angles onstories. Variational Principles for Lagrangian Averaged Fluid Dynamics
The Lagrangian average (LA) of the ideal fluid equations preserves their
transport structure. This transport structure is responsible for the Kelvin
circulation theorem of the LA flow and, hence, for its convection of potential
vorticity and its conservation of helicity.
Lagrangian averaging also preserves the Euler-Poincar\'e (EP) variational
framework that implies the LA fluid equations. This is expressed in the
Lagrangian-averaged Euler-Poincar\'e (LAEP) theorem proven here and illustrated

Regge Calculus in Teleparallel Gravity
In the context of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity, the
Weitzenbock manifold is considered as the limit of a suitable sequence of
discrete lattices composed of an increasing number of smaller an smaller
simplices, where the interior of each simplex (Delaunay lattice) is assumed to
be flat. The link lengths between any pair of vertices serve as independent
variables, so that torsion turns out to be localized in the two dimensional
hypersurfaces (dislocation triangle, or hinge) of the lattice. Assuming that a
vector undergoes a dislocation in relation to its initial position as it is
parallel transported along the perimeter of the dual lattice (Voronoi polygon),
we obtain the discrete analogue of the teleparallel action, as well as the

Leray and LANS- modeling of turbulent mixing
Mathematical regularisation of the nonlinear terms in the Navier-Stokes
equations provides a systematic approach to deriving subgrid closures for
numerical simulations of turbulent flow. By construction, these subgrid
closures imply existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the
corresponding modelled system of equations. We will consider the large eddy
interpretation of two such mathematical regularisation principles, i.e., Leray
and LANS regularisation. The Leray principle introduces a {\bfi
smoothed transport velocity} as part of the regularised convective
nonlinearity. The LANS principle extends the Leray formulation in a
natural way in which a {\bfi filtered Kelvin circulation theorem},
incorporating the smoothed transport velocity, is explicitly satisfied. These
regularisation principles give rise to implied subgrid closures which will be
applied in large eddy simulation of turbulent mixing. Comparison with filtered
direct numerical simulation data, and with predictions obtained from popular
dynamic eddy-viscosity modelling, shows that these mathematical regularisation
models are considerably more accurate, at a lower computational cost.Comment: 42 pages, 12 figure
Coupling of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond to a GaP waveguide
The optical coupling of guided modes in a GaP waveguide to nitrogen-vacancy
(NV) centers in diamond is demonstrated. The electric field penetration into
diamond and the loss of the guided mode are measured. The results indicate that
the GaP-diamond system could be useful for realizing coupled microcavity-NV

Impact of in-crop and soil residual herbicides on effective nitrogen fixation in field pea (Pisum sativum L.) and chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)
Non-Peer ReviewedA three-year project was initiated in 2004 to examine the effects of residual herbicides
and registered âin-cropâ herbicides, both soil and foliar applied, on N fixation and
consequent yield of field peas and chickpeas. Inoculation strategies were examined to
determine if inoculant formulation (i.e., peat powder versus granular inoculant)
influences the degree to which herbicides can affect N fixation. This research is ongoing and thus all results are considered preliminary. Preliminary results in field pea,
suggest that where herbicides had a negative effect on N fixation, the effects occurred at relatively early growth stages (i.e., soon after herbicide application) and were typically overcome at later growth stages. In addition, granular inoculants were associated with increased N fixation as compared to peat powder inoculants, and may have mitigated any negative herbicide effects. Chickpea incurred damage from the herbicides and all treatments had significantly less N fixation than the control. In general, results suggest that N fixation may be compromised if herbicides cause significant plant damage; however, improved weed control associated with herbicide application may counter the negative impact on early N fixation
Nrf2 negatively regulates STING indicating a link between antiviral sensing and metabolic reprogramming
The transcription factor Nrf2 is a critical regulator of inflammatory responses. If and how Nrf2 also affects cytosolic nucleic acid sensing is currently unknown. Here we identify Nrf2 as an important negative regulator of STING and suggest a link between metabolic reprogramming and antiviral cytosolic DNA sensing in human cells. Here, Nrf2 activation decreases STING expression and responsiveness to STING agonists while increasing susceptibility to infection with DNA viruses. Mechanistically, Nrf2 regulates STING expression by decreasing STING mRNA stability. Repression of STING by Nrf2 occurs in metabolically reprogrammed cells following TLR4/7 engagement, and is inducible by a cell-permeable derivative of the TCA-cycle-derived metabolite itaconate (4-octyl-itaconate, 4-OI). Additionally, engagement of this pathway by 4-OI or the Nrf2 inducer sulforaphane is sufficient to repress STING expression and type I IFN production in cells from patients with STING-dependent interferonopathies. We propose Nrf2 inducers as a future treatment option in STING-dependent inflammatory diseases
First-order transition in the one-dimensional three-state Potts model with long-range interactions
The first-order phase transition in the three-state Potts model with
long-range interactions decaying as has been examined by
numerical simulations using recently proposed Luijten-Bl\"ote algorithm. By
applying scaling arguments to the interface free energy, the Binder's
fourth-order cumulant, and the specific heat maximum, the change in the
character of the transition through variation of parameter was
