Sudden Increases in Listeriosis Rates in England and Wales, 2001 and 2003
The monthly incidence of listeriosis infections in England and Wales had 2 sudden increases during April 2001 (41%) and March 2003 (48%). Although no causative association is demonstrated, these increases correspond to key dates relating to the onset and aftermath of the 2001 foot and mouth disease outbreak in the United Kingdom
Transfer-Matrix Monte Carlo Estimates of Critical Points in the Simple Cubic Ising, Planar and Heisenberg Models
The principle and the efficiency of the Monte Carlo transfer-matrix algorithm
are discussed. Enhancements of this algorithm are illustrated by applications
to several phase transitions in lattice spin models. We demonstrate how the
statistical noise can be reduced considerably by a similarity transformation of
the transfer matrix using a variational estimate of its leading eigenvector, in
analogy with a common practice in various quantum Monte Carlo techniques. Here
we take the two-dimensional coupled -Ising model as an example.
Furthermore, we calculate interface free energies of finite three-dimensional
O() models, for the three cases , 2 and 3. Application of finite-size
scaling to the numerical results yields estimates of the critical points of
these three models. The statistical precision of the estimates is satisfactory
for the modest amount of computer time spent
Asymptotically exact mean field theory for the Anderson model including double occupancy
The Anderson impurity model for finite values of the Coulomb repulsion is
studied using a slave boson representation for the empty and doubly occupied
-level. In order to avoid well known problems with a naive mean field theory
for the boson fields, we use the coherent state path integral representation to
first integrate out the double occupancy slave bosons. The resulting effective
action is linearized using {\bf two-time} auxiliary fields. After integration
over the fermionic degrees of freedom one obtains an effective action suitable
for a -expansion. Concerning the constraint the same problem remains as
in the infinite case. For and
exact results for the ground state properties are recovered in the saddle point
approximation. Numerical solutions of the saddle point equations show that even

Fatal congenital anaplasmosis associated with bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) infection in a crossbred calf
Clinical disease resulting from the vertical transmission of Anaplasma marginale has only
been reported on 5 occasions despite studies demonstrating successful in utero transmission.
During the reported experimental induction of congenital anaplasmosis in calves, the
outcome was variable but mostly led to inapparent or mild infection. There are previous
case reports of fatal congenital anaplasmosis following natural infection. The clinical findings
in a 2-day-old calf presented to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital with
clinical signs of congenital anaplasmosis, which was unresponsive to treatment, are described.
Subsequent post mortem diagnostic tests revealed that this calf was co-infected with
bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV). It is postulated that immunosuppression resulting
from BVDV infection predisposed to severe, fatal anaplasmosis in this calf.Department of Production Animal

Effects of organic plant oils and role of oxidation on nutrient utilization in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
The study compared the effect of four either fresh or force oxidized organic plant oils in diets for juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in which 47% of conventional LT fish meal protein was substituted by a mixture of 3 organic plant protein concentrates. Fish oil was completely substituted with either organic linseed oil; rape seed oil; sunflower oil or grape seed oil and evaluated based on feed intake, feed utilization, growth and digestibility. None of the plant oils affected feed intake and growth parameters. Organic plant oils had all a positive effect on lipid digestibility as compared with the fish oil based control diet, despite the very different FA profiles. The organic vegetable oils did not undergo autoxidation, as opposed to the fish oil control for which lipid digestibility was significantly negative influenced
Compton scattering beyond the impulse approximation
We treat the non-relativistic Compton scattering process in which an incoming
photon scatters from an N-electron many-body state to yield an outgoing photon
and a recoil electron, without invoking the commonly used frameworks of either
the impulse approximation (IA) or the independent particle model (IPM). An
expression for the associated triple differential scattering cross section is
obtained in terms of Dyson orbitals, which give the overlap amplitudes between
the N-electron initial state and the (N-1) electron singly ionized quantum
states of the target. We show how in the high energy transfer regime, one can
recover from our general formalism the standard IA based formula for the cross
section which involves the ground state electron momentum density (EMD) of the
initial state. Our formalism will permit the analysis and interpretation of
electronic transitions in correlated electron systems via inelastic x-ray
scattering (IXS) spectroscopy beyond the constraints of the IA and the IPM.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Randomly generated polytopes for testing mathematical programming algorithms
Randomly generated polytopes are used frequently to test and compare algorithms for a variety of mathematical programming problems. These polytopes are constructed by generating linear inequality constraints with coefficients drawn independently from a distribution such as the uniform or the normal.
It is noted that this class of 'random' polytopes has a special property: the angles between the hyperplanes, though dependent on the specific distribution used, tend to be equal when the dimension of the space increases. Obviously this structure of 'random' polytopes may bias test results
Critical exponents and equation of state of the three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class
We improve the theoretical estimates of the critical exponents for the
three-dimensional Heisenberg universality class. We find gamma=1.3960(9),
nu=0.7112(5), eta=0.0375(5), alpha=-0.1336(15), beta=0.3689(3), and
delta=4.783(3). We consider an improved lattice phi^4 Hamiltonian with
suppressed leading scaling corrections. Our results are obtained by combining
Monte Carlo simulations based on finite-size scaling methods and
high-temperature expansions. The critical exponents are computed from
high-temperature expansions specialized to the phi^4 improved model. By the
same technique we determine the coefficients of the small-magnetization
expansion of the equation of state. This expansion is extended analytically by
means of approximate parametric representations, obtaining the equation of
state in the whole critical region. We also determine a number of universal

Centrality dependence of charged-particle pseudorapidity distributions from d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_{NN})=200 GeV
Charged-particle pseudorapidity densities are presented for the d+Au reaction
at sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV with -4.2 <= eta <= 4.2$. The results, from the BRAHMS
experiment at RHIC, are shown for minimum-bias events and 0-30%, 30-60%, and
60-80% centrality classes. Models incorporating both soft physics and hard,
perturbative QCD-based scattering physics agree well with the experimental
results. The data do not support predictions based on strong-coupling,
semi-classical QCD. In the deuteron-fragmentation region the central 200 GeV
data show behavior similar to full-overlap d+Au results at sqrt{s_{NN}}=19.4

High Pt Hadron Spectra at High Rapidity
We report the measurement of charged hadron production at different
pseudo-rapidity values in deuteron+gold as well as proton+proton collisions at
= 200GeV at RHIC. The nuclear modification factors and
are used to investigate new behaviors in the deuteron+gold system as
