A computable general equilibrium model is used to estimate the impact a resource supply constraint, that restricts federal timber harvest, has on a timber dependent region. Unraveling quantum dissipation in the frequency domain
We present a quantum Monte Carlo method for solving the evolution of an open
quantum system. In our approach, the density operator evolution is unraveled in
the frequency domain. Significant advantages of this approach arise when the
frequency of each dissipative event conveys information about the state of the

HST/STIS Imaging of the Host Galaxy of GRB980425/SN1998bw
We present HST/STIS observations of ESO 184-G82, the host galaxy of the
gamma-ray burst GRB 980425 associated with the peculiar Type Ic supernova
SN1998bw. ESO 184-G82 is found to be an actively star forming SBc sub-luminous
galaxy. We detect an object consistent with being a point source within the
astrometric uncertainty of 0.018 arcseconds of the position of the supernova.
The object is located inside a star-forming region and is at least one
magnitude brighter than expected for the supernova based on a simple
radioactive decay model. This implies either a significant flattening of the

Discontinuous Percolation Transitions in Epidemic Processes, Surface Depinning in Random Media and Hamiltonian Random Graphs
Discontinuous percolation transitions and the associated tricritical points
are manifest in a wide range of both equilibrium and non-equilibrium
cooperative phenomena. To demonstrate this, we present and relate the
continuous and first order behaviors in two different classes of models: The
first are generalized epidemic processes (GEP) that describe in their spatially
embedded version - either on or off a regular lattice - compact or fractal
cluster growth in random media at zero temperature. A random graph version of
GEP is mapped onto a model previously proposed for complex social contagion. We
compute detailed phase diagrams and compare our numerical results at the
tricritical point in d = 3 with field theory predictions of Janssen et al.
[Phys. Rev. E 70, 026114 (2004)]. The second class consists of exponential
("Hamiltonian", or formally equilibrium) random graph models and includes the
Strauss and the 2-star model, where 'chemical potentials' control the densities
of links, triangles or 2-stars. When the chemical potentials in either graph
model are O(logN), the percolation transition can coincide with a first order
phase transition in the density of links, making the former also discontinuous.
Hysteresis loops can then be of mixed order, with second order behavior for
decreasing link fugacity, and a jump (first order) when it increases
Non-destructive cavity QED probe of Bloch oscillations in a gas of ultracold atoms
We describe a scheme for probing a gas of ultracold atoms trapped in an
optical lattice and moving in the presence of an external potential. The probe
is non-destructive and uses the existing lattice fields as the measurement
device. Two counter-propagating cavity fields simultaneously set up a
conservative lattice potential and a weak quantum probe of the atomic motion.
Balanced heterodyne detection of the probe field at the cavity output along
with integration in time and across the atomic cloud yield information about
the atomic dynamics in a single run. The scheme is applied to a measurement of
the Bloch oscillation frequency for atoms moving in the presence of the local
gravitational potential. Signal-to-noise ratios are estimated to be as high as

A Bohmian approach to quantum fractals
A quantum fractal is a wavefunction with a real and an imaginary part
continuous everywhere, but differentiable nowhere. This lack of
differentiability has been used as an argument to deny the general validity of
Bohmian mechanics (and other trajectory--based approaches) in providing a
complete interpretation of quantum mechanics. Here, this assertion is overcome
by means of a formal extension of Bohmian mechanics based on a limiting
approach. Within this novel formulation, the particle dynamics is always
satisfactorily described by a well defined equation of motion. In particular,
in the case of guidance under quantum fractals, the corresponding trajectories

Space shuttle, the most complex transportation system designed to date, illustrates the requirement for an analysis approach that considers all major disciplines simultaneously. Its unique cross coupling and high sensitivity to aerodynamic uncertainties and high performance requirements dictated a less conservative approach than those taken in programs. Analyses performed for the space shuttle and certain payloads, Space Telescope and Spacelab, are used a examples. These illustrate the requirements for system analysis approaches and criteria, including dynamic modeling requirements, test requirements control requirements and the resulting design verification approaches. A survey of the problem, potential approaches available as solutions, implications for future systems, and projected technology development areas are addressed

The requirements for system analysis approaches and criteria, including dynamic modeling requirements, test requirements, control requirements, and the resulting design verification approaches are illustrated. Parameters Affecting Bird Use of Stormwater Impoundments in the Southeastern United States: Implications for Hazardous Wildlife Management at Airports
Stormwater impoundments within Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) citing criteria (10,000 ft from the air operations area) increase the risk of bird-aircraft collisions (strikes) by providing bird habitat. The number of wildlife strikes (97.5% involving birds) reported in the U.S. annually is increasing and, consequently, annual losses to the U.S. civil aviation industry from strikes now exceed $625 million. Wildlife managers must find ways to reduce this risk, while still managing stormwater for environmental quality compliance and safe aircraft ground movements. Existing guidelines for wildlife-hazard management at airports do not quantify the role of pond and landscape characteristics in attracting birds to stormwater impoundments. In a collaborative effort with the FAA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture\u27s Wildlife Services program, we are quantifying bird use of 40 stormwater detention ponds near Auburn, AL, over a two-year period. We will use the observer data and analyses via geographic information systems to develop bird-habitat models and, subsequently, improved BMPs to reduce bird use of stormwater impoundments in and around airports.
