Error analysis of Dobson spectrophotometer measurements of the total ozone content
A study of techniques for measuring atmospheric ozone is reported. This study represents the second phase of a program designed to improve techniques for the measurement of atmospheric ozone. This phase of the program studied the sensitivity of Dobson direct sun measurements and the ozone amounts inferred from those measurements to variation in the atmospheric temperature profile. The study used the plane - parallel Monte-Carlo model developed and tested under the initial phase of this program, and a series of standard model atmospheres
Dynamic Fracture in Single Crystal Silicon
We have measured the velocity of a running crack in brittle single crystal
silicon as a function of energy flow to the crack tip. The experiments are
designed to permit direct comparison with molecular dynamics simulations;
therefore the experiments provide an indirect but sensitive test of interatomic
potentials. Performing molecular dynamics simulations of brittle crack motion
at the atomic scale we find that experiments and simulations disagree showing

Quantum phase transitions in the Fermi-Bose Hubbard model
We propose a multi-band Fermi-Bose Hubbard model with on-site fermion-boson
conversion and general filling factor in three dimensions. Such a Hamiltonian
models an atomic Fermi gas trapped in a lattice potential and subject to a
Feshbach resonance. We solve this model in the two state approximation for
paired fermions at zero temperature. The problem then maps onto a coupled
Heisenberg spin model. In the limit of large positive and negative detuning,
the quantum phase transitions in the Bose Hubbard and Paired-Fermi Hubbard
models are correctly reproduced. Near resonance, the Mott states are given by a
superposition of the paired-fermion and boson fields and the Mott-superfluid
borders go through an avoided crossing in the phase diagram.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Thermodynamics of Multi-Component Fermi Vapors
We study the thermodynamical properties of Fermi vapors confined in a
harmonic external potential. In the case of the ideal Fermi gas, we compare
exact density profiles with their semiclassical approximation in the conditions
of recent experiments. Then, we consider the phase-separation of a
multi-component Fermi vapor. In particular, we analyze the phase-separation as
a function of temperature, number of particles and scattering length. Finally,
we discuss the effect of rotation on the stability and thermodynamics of the

A randomized trial of brief intervention strategies in patients with alcohol-related facial trauma as a result of interpersonal violence
Facial trauma is associated with male gender, low socioeconomic status, alcohol misuse, and violence. Brief intervention (BI) for alcohol is effective at reducing consumption in patients presenting with facial trauma. Singlesession control of violence for angry impulsive drinkers(SS-COVAID) is a new intervention that attempts to address alcohol-related violence. This study assessed the effect of SS-COVAID and BI on drinking and aggression in facial trauma patients. Male facial trauma patients who sustained their injuries as a result of interpersonal violence while drinking and who had Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) scores of ≥8 were randomized to either BI or SS-COVAID. Patients were followed up at six and 12 months, and drinking and aggression outcomes were analyzed. One hundred ninety-nine patients entered the trial, and 187 were included in the analysis. Of these, 165 (89%) considered themselves to be victims, 92 (51%) had sustained a previous alcohol-related injury, and 28
(15%) had previous convictions for violence. Both interventions resulted in a significant decrease in negative drinking outcomes over 12 months of follow-up (p<0.001). Neither intervention had a significant effect on aggression scores, nor was there a significant difference between interventions in terms of either outcome. Both SS-COVAID and BI had a significant effect on drinking variables in this patient cohort. No effect on aggressionwas seen despite the fact that SS-COVAID specifically addresses the relationship between alcohol and violence. One reason for this may be that the facial trauma patients in this study considered themselves to be victims rather than aggressors. Another possibility is that, while BI may successfully address lifestyle factors such as hazardous or harmful drinking, it may not be effective in modifying personality traits such as aggression
The SUMMIT trial: a field comparison of buprenorphine versus methadone maintenance treatment.
This prospective patient-preference study examined the effectiveness in practice of methadone versus buprenorphine maintenance treatment and the beliefs of subjects regarding these drugs. A total of 361 opiate-dependent individuals (89% of those eligible, presenting for treatment over 2 years at a drug service in England) received rapid titration then flexible dosing with methadone or buprenorphine; 227 patients chose methadone (63%) and 134 buprenorphine (37%). Participants choosing methadone had more severe substance abuse and psychiatric and physical problems but were more likely to remain in treatment. Survival analysis indicated those prescribed methadone were over twice as likely to be retained (hazard ratio for retention was 2.08 and 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.49-2.94 for methadone vs. buprenorphine), However, those retained on buprenorphine were more likely to suppress illicit opiate use (odds ratio = 2.136, 95% CI = 1.509-3.027, p < .001) and achieve detoxification. Buprenorphine may also recruit more individuals to treatment because 28% of those choosing buprenorphine (10% of the total sample) stated they would not have accessed treatment with methadone
About Some Problems Raised by the Relativistic Form of De-Broglie--Bohm Theory of Pilot Wave
The standard relativistic de-Broglie--Bohm theory has the problems of
tacyonic solutions and the incorrect non-relativistic limit. In this paper we
obtain a relativistic theory, not decomposing the relativistic wave equations
but looking for a generalization of non-relativistic Bohmian theory in such a
way that the correct non-relativistic limit emerges. In this way we are able to
construct a relativistic de-Broglie--Bohm theory both for a single particle and
for a many-particle system. At the end, the theory is extended to the curved

System analysis approach to deriving design criteria (loads) for Space Shuttle and its payloads. Volume 1: General statement of approach
Space shuttle, the most complex transportation system designed to date, illustrates the requirement for an analysis approach that considers all major disciplines simultaneously. Its unique cross coupling and high sensitivity to aerodynamic uncertainties and high performance requirements dictated a less conservative approach than those taken in programs. Analyses performed for the space shuttle and certain payloads, Space Telescope and Spacelab, are used a examples. These illustrate the requirements for system analysis approaches and criteria, including dynamic modeling requirements, test requirements control requirements and the resulting design verification approaches. A survey of the problem, potential approaches available as solutions, implications for future systems, and projected technology development areas are addressed
