    The Changing Economic Status of U.S. Disabled Men: Trends and Their Determinants, 1982–1991

    In this paper, we track the level of economic well-being of the population of men who began receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits in 1980–81 from the time just after they became beneficiaries (in 1982) to 1991, nearly a decade later. We present measures of the economic well-being of disabled individuals and their nondisabled peers as indicators of the relative economic position of these two groups. These measures also provide an intertemporal comparison of well-being and hardship as disabled persons and their nondisabled peers age and retire. We first show several economic well-being indicators for this group of new male recipients of disability benefits in 1982 and 1991. Then, we compare their economic position to that of a matched group of nondisabled males with sufficient work histories to have been disability-insured, that is, eligible for SSDI benefits had they been unable to engage in substantial gainful employment. Because labor market changes over this decade have led to a relative deterioration in the position of younger and less-educated workers, we compare men with disabilities to those without disabilities and distinguish different age and educational levels within the groups. In studying these comparative trends in well-being, we focus on the prevalence of poverty and its correlates. We conclude by assessing the antipoverty effectiveness of Social Security income support for both younger and older men who became SSDI recipients in 1980–81.

    This study provides an assessment of the intertemporal economic well-being of a representative sample of women who began receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in 1980–81. We compare their economic circumstances over the 1982–1991 period with those of disabled men who also began receiving SSDI in those years and with those of a matched sample of nondisabled women who had sufficient work experience for benefit eligibility should they have become disabled. In 1982, the new SSDI women beneficiaries were a relatively poor segment of U.S. society: one quarter of them lived in poverty and 48 percent had incomes below 150 percent of the poverty line. As of 1991, over one-half of these disabled women lived in families with income below 150 percent of the poverty line. Social Security benefits to disabled women have played an important, and growing, role in sustaining economic status. Nevertheless, the level of well-being of these women lies substantially below that of the comparison groups. We statistically relate the poverty status of these new female recipients to sociodemographic factors that would be expected to contribute to lower levels of well-being, and we simulate the effect of Social Security benefits in reducing poverty and replacing earnings. We suggest a number of SSDI-related policy changes that could, at low cost, reduce poverty among the poorest women.

    X-ray Observations of Distant Optically Selected Cluster

    We have measured fluxes or flux limits for 31 of the 79 cluster candidates in the Palomar Distant Cluster Survey (PDCS) using archival ROSAT/PSPC pointed observations. Our X-ray survey reaches a flux limit of 3×1014\simeq 3 \times 10^{-14} erg s1^{-1} cm2^{-2} (0.4 - 2.0 keV), which corresponds to luminosities of Lx5×1043L_x\simeq 5 \times 10^{43} erg s1^{-1} (HoH_o = 50 km s1^{-1} Mpc1^{-1}, qoq_o = 1/2{1/2}), if we assume the PDCS estimated redshifts. Of the 31 cluster candidates, we detect six at a signal-to-noise greater than three. We estimate that 2.91.4+3.32.9^{+3.3}_{-1.4} (90% confidence limits) of these six detections are a result of X-ray emission from objects unrelated to the PDCS cluster candidates. The net surface density of X-ray emitting cluster candidates in our survey, 1.712.19+0.911.71^{+0.91}_{-2.19} clusters deg2^{-2}, agrees with that of other, X-ray selected, surveys. It is possible, given the large error on our contamination rate, that we have not detected X-ray emission from any of our observed PDCS cluster candidates. We find no statistically significant difference between the X-ray luminosities of PDCS cluster candidates and those of Abell clusters of similar optical richness. This suggests that the PDCS contains objects at high redshift similar to the low redshift clusters in the Abell catalogs. We show that the PDCS cluster candidates are not bright X-ray sources, the average luminosity of the six detected candidates is only Lxˉ=0.9×1044\bar{L_x}=0.9\times10^{44} erg s1^{-1} (0.4-2.0 keV).     Controls on the spatial distribution of oceanic <i>δ</i><sup>13</sup>C<sub>DIC</sub>

    We describe the design and evaluation of a large ensemble of coupled climate–carbon cycle simulations with the Earth system model of intermediate complexity GENIE. This ensemble has been designed for application to a range of carbon cycle questions, including the causes of late- Quaternary fluctuations in atmospheric CO2. Here we evaluate the ensemble by applying it to a transient experiment over the recent industrial era (1858 to 2008 AD). We employ singular vector decomposition and principal component emulation to investigate the spatial modes of ensemble variability of oceanic dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) δ13C, considering both the spun-up pre-industrial state and the transient change. These analyses allow us to separate the natural (preindustrial) and anthropogenic controls on the δ13CDIC distribution. We apply the same dimensionally reduced emulation techniques to consider the drivers of the spatial uncertainty in anthropogenic DIC. We show that the sources of uncertainty related to the uptake of anthropogenic δ13CDIC and DIC are quite distinct. Uncertainty in anthropogenic δ13C uptake is controlled by air–sea gas exchange, which explains 63% of modelled variance. This mode of variability is largely absent from the ensemble variability in CO2 uptake, which is rather driven by uncertainties in thermocline ventilation rates. Although the need to account for air–sea gas exchange is well known, these results suggest that, to leading order, uncertainties in the ocean uptake of anthropogenic 13C and CO2 are governed by very different processes. This illustrates the difficulties in reconstructing one from the other, and furthermore highlights the need for careful targeting of both δ13CDIC and DIC observations to better constrain the ocean sink of anthropogenic CO2

    Qualitative Examination of African American Women's Perspectives about Depression

    Gaining greater understanding about the various psychosocial, socio-cultural, and environmental factors that may influence experiences of depression among African American women (AAW) helps elucidate how this mental illness impacts the lives of this population. Sixty-three adult AAW comprised the study’s convenience sample.  Specifically, focus group cohorts inclusive of women from an academic institution, a primary healthcare clinic, and an urban community setting were conducted.  Results indicated six (6) dominant common themes as issues that may increase risk for depression among diverse AAW.  Similarities and differences about perspectives that contributed to depression were delineated among the three cohorts of AAW.  These results are important for mental/behavioral health researchers, practitioners, and public health professionals that are engaged in the design and implementation of culturally centered and gender-specific prevention and intervention strategies targeted to AAW at risk for depression. 

    A Turn-over in the Galaxy Luminosity Function of the Coma Cluster Core?

    Our previous study of the faint end (R\leq21.5) of the galaxy luminosity function (GLF) was based on spectroscopic data in a small region near the Coma cluster center. In this previous study Adami et al. (1998) suggested, with moderate statistical significance, that the number of galaxies actually belonging to the cluster was much smaller than expected. This led us to increase our spectroscopic sample. Here, we have improved the statistical significance of the results of the Coma GLF faint end study (R\leq22.5) by using a sample of 85 redshifts. This includes both new spectroscopic data and a literature compilation. The relatively small number of faint galaxies belonging to Coma that was suggested by Adami et al. (1998) and Secker et al. (1998) has been confirmed with these new observations. We also confirm that the color-magnitude relation is not well suited for finding the galaxies inside the Coma cluster core, close to the center at magnitudes fainter than R\sim19. We show that there is an enhancement in the Coma line of sight of field galaxies compared to classical field counts. This can be explained by the contribution of groups and of a distant z0.5z\sim 0.5 cluster along the line of sight. The result is that the Coma GLF appears to turn-over or at least to become flat for the faint galaxies.     Phase entrainment of induced ventricular fibrillation: A human feasibility and proof of concept study

    Cardioversion and defibrillation by a single high energy shock applied by myocardial or body surface electrodes is painful, causes long term tissue damage, and is associated with worsening long term outcomes, but is almost always required for treatment of ventricular fibrillation . As a initial step towards developing methods that can terminate ventricular arrhythmias painlessly, we aim to determine if pacing stimuli at a rate of 5/s applied via an implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) can modify human ventricular fibrillation. In 8 patients undergoing defibrillation testing of a new/exchanged intracardiac defibrillator, five seconds of pacing at five stimuli per second was applied during the 10-20 seconds of induced ventricular fibrillation before the defibrillation shock was automatically applied, and the cardiac electrograms recorded and analyzed. The high frequency pacing did not entrain the ventricular fibrillation, but altered the dominant frequency in all 8 patients, and modulated the phase computed via the Hilbert Transform, in four of the patients. In this pilot study we demonstrate that high frequency pacing applied via ICD electrodes during VF can alter the dominant frequency and modulate the probability density of the phase of the electrogram of the ventricular fibrillation

    Superclustering at Redshift Z=0.54

    We present strong evidence for the existence of a supercluster at a redshift of z=0.54 in the direction of Selected Area 68. From the distribution of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts we find that there is a large over-density of galaxies (a factor of four over the number expected in an unclustered universe) within the redshift range 0.530 < z < 0.555. By considering the spatial distribution of galaxies within this redshift range (using spectroscopic and photometric redshifts) we show that the galaxies in SA68 form a linear structure passing from the South-West of the survey field through to the North-East (with a position angle of approximately 35 deg East of North). This position angle is coincident with the positions of the X-ray clusters CL0016+16, RX J0018.3+1618 and a new X-ray cluster, RX J0018.8+1602, centered near the radio source 54W084. All three of these sources are at a redshift of approximately z=0.54 and have position angles, derived from their X-ray photon distributions, consistent with that measured for the supercluster. Assuming a redshift of 0.54 for the distribution of galaxies and a FWHM dispersion in redshift of 0.020 this represents a coherent structure with a radial extent of 31 Mpc, transverse dimension of 12 Mpc, and a thickness of approximately 4 Mpc. The detection of this possible supercluster demonstrates the power of using X-ray observations, combined with multicolor observations, to map the large scale distribution of galaxies at intermediate redshifts.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, Latex, aaspp4.sty, accepted for publication in Ap J Letters.
