Techniques for decoding speech phonemes and sounds: A concept

    Get PDF
Techniques studied involve conversion of speech sounds into machine-compatible pulse trains. (1) Voltage-level quantizer produces number of output pulses proportional to amplitude characteristics of vowel-type phoneme waveforms. (2) Pulses produced by quantizer of first speech formants are compared with pulses produced by second formants

Doing Business : Defining State Control Over Foreign Corporations

    Get PDF
This Note will attempt to analyze the present status of the term doing business or the substitute terminology used to define that level of activity sufficient to subject a foreign corporation to state control in a particular context.\u27 After defining the degree of activity necessary to permit the state to exercise control in each context, this Note will analyze the accuracy and utility of using terminology such as doing business in describing whether corporate activity within a state is sufficient to permit state exercise of legislative or judicial jurisdiction. This Note concludes by pro-posing that use of such ambiguous language be discontinued in favor of a single due process nexus test to be applied as a thresh-old requirement for the exercise of any state authority, and that legislative jurisdiction be further subject to the commerce clause requirement that legislative demands made with respect to foreign corporations engaged in interstate commerce must not be excessive in relation to the benefits and protection conferred by the state

Variations on the Euclidean Steiner Tree Problem and Algorithms

    Get PDF
The Euclidean Steiner Tree Problem (ESTP) involves creating a minimal spanning network of a set of points by allowing the introduction of new points, called Steiner points. This paper discusses a variation on this classic problem by introducing a single Steiner line‚ whose weight is not counted in the resulting network, in addition to the Steiner points. For small sets, we arrive at a complete geometric solution. We discuss heuristic algorithms for solving this variation on larger sets. We believe that, in general, this problem is NP-hard

Transgenic laboratory animals in cystic fibrosis research

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal autosomal recessive genetic disorder in Caucasian populations. The incidence in Denmark is approximately 1:4500 and about 50.000 CF patients are registred in Europe and the Americas. The diseaseis characterized by malabsorption due to exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, chronic bacterial infections in the lower respiratory tract, increased salt loss in sweat, and male infertility due to absence or stenosis of the vas deferens. The CF gene wasidentified on Chromosome 7 in 1989. More than 450 different mutations have been detected, the most common being the AF508.This gene encodes for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator protein (CFTR) which is a Cl' channel regulatedby protein kinase C and ATP. It facilitates transport of Cl' and other ions through the cell membrane. Two years ago. three different groups of scientists published articles describing three different variants of CF mice (>>knock—out<< mice). Two of these mice suffer from severe CF-like symptoms. especially in the intestine. and most of them die within 3 weeks. The last one has some residual CFTR activity and survives for several months. These mice allow investigations on genetherapy using different vectors and investigations on the pathogenesis of the chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infection to be carried out. Thus. the prospects for understanding CF seems promising

Joseph W. Gibbs ==================== Torts-Independent Contractors-Employer Is Liable for Tortious Conduct of His Financially Irresponsible Independent Contractor All rules affecting the master-servant relationship derive from the historic legal principle that employers are liable for the tortious conduct of their employees occurring in the course of employment. Respondeat superior, which imputes employee negligence to the employer, is not premised on fault. Instead, because the employer has the right to select, control, and dismiss employees\u27 and because he is assumed to be in a better financial position to respond to judgments, the employer is held vicariously liable for tortious acts of his employees within the scope of employment.
