    Scales of the Extra Dimensions and their Gravitational Wave Backgrounds

    Circumstances are described in which symmetry breaking during the formation of our three-dimensional brane within a higher-dimensional space in the early universe excites mesoscopic classical radion or brane-displacement degrees of freedom and produces a detectable stochastic background of gravitational radiation. The spectrum of the background is related to the unification energy scale and the the sizes and numbers of large extra dimensions. It is shown that properties of the background observable by gravitational-wave observatories at frequencies f≈10−4f\approx 10^{-4} Hz to 10310^3 Hz contain information about unification on energy scales from 1 to 101010^{10} TeV, gravity propagating through extra-dimension sizes from 1 mm to 10−1810^{-18}mm, and the dynamical history and stabilization of from one to seven extra dimensions.Comment: 6 pages, Latex, 1 figure, submitted to Phys.     Clinical and pathologic characteristics of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis pathologic variants

    Histologic variants of idiopathic focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) may have prognostic value. A recent working classification system has distinguished five FSGS variants. We evaluated a cohort of adult patients with biopsy-proven FSGS diagnosed between March 1982 and July 2001 to determine if subtypes were associated with renal outcome. Renal biopsies were reviewed by two pathologists. Demographic and clinical data were obtained from charts. Outcomes were partial and complete remission of the nephrotic syndrome, and renal failure. The frequency of FSGS variants was: 3% cellular (=6), 11% collapsing (=22), 17% tip lesion (=34), 26% perihilar (=52), and 42% not otherwise specified (NOS) (=83). Collapsing FSGS affected younger and more often black patients. Black race was uncommon in tip variant. Collapsing and tip variants had higher proteinuria and lower serum albumin than perihilar and NOS variants. Better renal function and less severe tubulointerstitial injury were observed in patients with tip variant. These patients were more likely to receive steroids and more often achieved complete remission (50%). After a median follow-up of 1.8 years, 23% of patients were on dialysis and 28% had renal failure. Collapsing FSGS had worse 1-year (74%) and 3-year (33%) renal survival compared to other variants (overall cohort renal survival at 1 and 3 years: 86 and 67%). Different histologic variants of FSGS have substantial differences in clinical features at the time of biopsy diagnosis and substantial differences in renal outcomes

    Consensus Statement on Dementia Education and Training in Europe

    OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current statement is to agree on: (1) what is the current situation with education and training on dementia in Europe; (2) what are the minimum educational requirements for professionals (neurologists, psychiatrists, primary care providers, nurses, biologists, neuroradiologists, etc.) regarding Alzheimer's disease and dementia, and (3) how to start a course of action for the future. DESIGN: In 2005, a simple questionnaire was sent to members of the European Alzheimer's Disease Consortium (EADC) concerning the education and training on dementia in their countries. Fourteen universities of the respective countries responded to this simple questionnaire. The answers varied, and the conclusion of this effort was that little was done concerning the training of students and health professionals on dementia. In 2008, another more structured and specified questionnaire was sent to professors in different universities of the same countries. RESULTS: The answers obtained were different from those of the previous questionnaire and demonstrated that it is very difficult to know about training and education in the field of dementia in every European country. CONCLUSION: From the data collected, it seems that although in the recent past little had been done concerning training on dementia, nowadays training has been developed in most European countries, and relevant educational projects exist both for medical students and doctors during their specialty training. Our main purpose is to develop training material or develop specific courses to improve the professional knowledge about dementia so that best medical and non-medical practice is implemented

    Complete remission in the nephrotic syndrome study network

    Background and objectives This analysis from the Nephrotic Syndrome Study Network (NEPTUNE) assessed the phenotypic and pathology characteristics of proteinuric patients undergoing kidney biopsy and defined the frequency and factors associated with complete proteinuria remission (CRever). Design, setting, participants, & measurements We enrolled adults and children with proteinuria ≄0.5 g/d at the time of first clinically indicated renal biopsy at 21 sites in North America from April 2010 to June 2014 into a prospective cohort study. NEPTUNE central pathologists assigned participants to minimal-change disease (MCD), FSGS, membranous nephropathy, or other glomerulopathy cohorts. Outcome measures for this analysis were (1) CRever with urine protein-to-creatinine ratio (UPC)<0.3 g/g with preserved native kidney function and (2) ESRD. Continuous variables are reported as median and interquartile range (IQR; 25th, 75th percentile). Cox proportional hazards modeling was used to assess factors associated with CRever. Results We enrolled 441 patients: 116 (27%) had MCD, 142 (32%) had FSGS, 66 (15%) had membranous nephropathy, and 117 (27%) had other glomerulopathy. The baseline UPC was 4.1 g/g (IQR, 1.9, 7.7) and the eGFR was 81 ml/min per 1.73 m2 (IQR, 50, 105). Median duration of observation was 19 months (IQR, 11, 30). CRever occurred in 46% of patients, and 4.6% progressed to ESRD. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that higher prebiopsy proteinuria (hazard ratio, 0.3; 95% confidence interval, 0.2 to 0.5) and pathology diagnosis (FSGS versus MCD; hazard ratio, 0.2; 95% confidence interval, 0.1 to 0.5) were inversely associated with CRever. The effect of immunosuppressive therapy on remission varied by pathology diagnosis. Conclusions In NEPTUNE, the high frequency of other pathology in proteinuric patients affirms the value of the diagnostic kidney biopsy. Clinical factors, including level of proteinuria before biopsy, pathology diagnosis, and immunosuppression, are associated with complete remission

    TRY plant trait database – enhanced coverage and open access

    Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait‐based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits—almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives
