Microscopic Enhancement of Heavy-Element Production
Realistic fusion barriers are calculated in a macroscopic-microscopic model
for several soft-fusion heavy-ion reactions leading to heavy and superheavy
elements. The results obtained in such a realistic picture are very different
from those obtained in a purely macroscopic model. For reactions on 208:Pb
targets, shell effects in the entrance channel result in fusion-barrier
energies at the touching point that are only a few MeV higher than the ground
state for compound systems near Z = 110. The entrance-channel fragment-shell
effects remain far inside the touching point, almost to configurations only
slightly more elongated than the ground-state configuration, where the fusion
barrier has risen to about 10 MeV above the ground-state energy. Calculated
single-particle level diagrams show that few level crossings occur until the
peak in the fusion barrier very close to the ground-state shape is reached,
which indicates that dissipation is negligible until very late in the fusion
process. Whereas the fission valley in a macroscopic picture is several tens of
MeV lower in energy than is the fusion valley, we find in the
macroscopic-microscopic picture that the fission valley is only about 5 MeV
lower than the fusion valley for soft-fusion reactions leading to compound
systems near Z = 110. These results show that no significant
``extra-extra-push'' energy is needed to bring the system inside the fission
saddle point and that the typical reaction energies for maximum cross section
in heavy-element synthesis correspond to only a few MeV above the maximum in
the fusion barrier.Comment: 7 pages. LaTeX. Submitted to Zeitschrift fur Physik A. 5 figures not

Statistical fluctuations for the fission process on its decent from saddle to scission
We reconsider the importance of statistical fluctuations for fission dynamics
beyond the saddle in the light of recent evaluations of transport coefficients
for average motion. The size of these fluctuations are estimated by means of
the Kramers-Ingold solution for the inverted oscillator, which allows for an
inclusion of quantum effects.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 5 Postscript figures; submitted to PRC e-mail:

Asymmetry and the Neutron Skin in Heavy Nuclei
In heavy nuclei the spatial distribution of protons and neutrons is
different. At CERN SPS energies production of and differs for
, , and scattering. These two facts lead to an impact
parameter dependence of the to ratio in
collisions. A recent experiment at CERN seems to confirm qualitatively these
predictions. It may open a possibility for determination of neutron density
distribution in nuclei.Comment: 6 pages and 2 figures, a talk by A.Szczurek at the international

The Jovian atmospheric window at 2.7 microns: A search for H2S
The atmospheric transmission window at 2.7 microns in Jupiter's atmosphere was observed at a spectral resolution of 0.1/cm from the Kuiiper Airborne Observatory. From an analysis of the CH4 abundance (80 m-am) and the H2O abundance ( 0.0125 cm-am) it was determined that the penetration depth of solar flux at 2.7 microns is near the base of the NH3 cloud layer. The upper limit to H2O at 2.7 microns and other results suggest that photolytic reactions in Jupiter's lower troposphere may not be as significant as was previously thought. A search for H2S in Jupiter's atmosphere yielded an upper limit of 0.1 cm-am. The corresponding limit to the element abundance ratio S/H was approx. 1.7x10(-8), about 10(-3) times the solar value. Upon modeling the abundance and distribution of H2S in Jupiter's atmosphere it was concluded that, contrary to expectations, sulfur-bearing chromophores are not present in significant amounts in Jupiter's visible clouds. Rather, it appears that most of Jupiter's sulfur is locked up as NH4SH in a lower cloud layer. Alternatively, the global abundance of sulfur in Jupiter may be significantly depleted
Renormalization of the baryon axial vector current in large-N_c chiral perturbation theory
The baryon axial vector current is computed at one-loop order in heavy baryon
chiral perturbation theory in the large-N_c limit, where N_c is the number of
colors. Loop graphs with octet and decuplet intermediate states cancel to
various orders in N_c as a consequence of the large-N_c spin-flavor symmetry of
QCD baryons. These cancellations are explicitly shown for the general case of
N_f flavors of light quarks. In particular, a new generic cancellation is
identified in the renormalization of the baryon axial vector current at
one-loop order. A comparison with conventional heavy baryon chiral perturbation
theory is performed at the physical values N_c=3, N_f=3.Comment: REVTex4, 29 pages, 2 figures, 6 tables. Equations (32) and (81)

Gamma ray emission and stochastic particle acceleration in galaxy clusters
FERMI (formely GLAST) will shortly provide crucial information on
relativistic particles in galaxy clusters. We discuss non-thermal emission in
the context of general calculations in which relativistic particles (protons
and secondary electrons due to proton-proton collisions) interact with MHD
turbulence generated in the cluster volume during cluster mergers. Diffuse
cluster-scale radio emission (Radio Halos) and hard X-rays are produced during
massive mergers while gamma ray emission, at some level, is expected to be
common in galaxy clusters.Comment: 4 pages, 2 Figure, proc. of the 4th Heidelberg International

Self-consistent quantal treatment of decay rates within the perturbed static path approximation
The framework of the Perturbed Static Path Approximation (PSPA) is used to
calculate the partition function of a finite Fermi system from a Hamiltonian
with a separable two body interaction. Therein, the collective degree of
freedom is introduced in self-consistent fashion through a Hubbard-Stratonovich
transformation. In this way all transport coefficients which dominate the decay
of a meta-stable system are defined and calculated microscopically. Otherwise
the same formalism is applied as in the Caldeira-Leggett model to deduce the
decay rate from the free energy above the so called crossover temperature

Angular Correlations in Internal Pair Conversion of Aligned Heavy Nuclei
We calculate the spatial correlation of electrons and positrons emitted by
internal pair conversion of Coulomb excited nuclei in heavy ion collisions. The
alignment or polarization of the nucleus results in an anisotropic emission of
the electron-positron pairs which is closely related to the anisotropic
emission of -rays. However, the angular correlation in the case of
internal pair conversion exhibits diverse patterns. This might be relevant when
investigating atomic processes in heavy-ion collisions performed at the Coulomb
barrier.Comment: 27 pages + 6 eps figures, uses revtex.sty and epsf.sty,

Enforcing Termination of Interprocedural Analysis
Interprocedural analysis by means of partial tabulation of summary functions
may not terminate when the same procedure is analyzed for infinitely many
abstract calling contexts or when the abstract domain has infinite strictly
ascending chains. As a remedy, we present a novel local solver for general
abstract equation systems, be they monotonic or not, and prove that this solver
fails to terminate only when infinitely many variables are encountered. We
clarify in which sense the computed results are sound. Moreover, we show that
interprocedural analysis performed by this novel local solver, is guaranteed to
terminate for all non-recursive programs --- irrespective of whether the
complete lattice is infinite or has infinite strictly ascending or descending
chains
