Reweighting towards the chiral limit
We propose to perform fully dynamical simulations at small quark masses by
reweighting in the quark mass. This approach avoids some of the technical
difficulties associated with direct simulations at very small quark masses. We
calculate the weight factors stochastically, using determinant breakup and low
mode projection to reduce the statistical fluctuations. We find that the weight
factors fluctuate only moderately on nHYP smeared dynamical Wilson-clover
ensembles, and we could successfully reweight 16^4, (1.85fm)^4 volume
configurations from m_q = 20MeV to m_q = 5MeV quark masses, reaching the
epsilon-regime. We illustrate the strength of the method by calculating the low
energy constant F from the epsilon-regime pseudo-scalar correlator.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure
Scanning probe microscopy imaging of metallic nanocontacts
We show scanning probe microscopy measurements of metallic nanocontacts
between controlled electromigration cycles. The nanowires used for the thinning
process are fabricated by shadow evaporation. The highest resolution obtained
using scanning force microscopy is about 3 nm. During the first few
electromigration cycles the overall slit structure of the nanocontact is
formed. The slit first passes along grain boundaries and then at a later stage
vertically splits grains in the course of consuming them. We find that first
the whole wire is heated and later during the thinning process as the slit
forms the current runs over several smaller contacts which needs less power.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Differential regulation of Ota and Otb, two primary glycine betaine transporters in the methanogenic archaeon Methanosarcina mazei go1
Methanogenic archaea accumulate glycine betaine in response to hypersalinity, but the regulation of proteins involved, their mechanism of activation and regulation of the corresponding genes are largely unknown. Methanosarcina mazei differs from most other methanoarchaea in having two gene clusters both encoding a potential glycine betaine transporter, Ota and Otb. Western blot as well as quantitative real-time PCR revealed that Otb is not regulated by osmolarity. On the other hand, cellular levels of Ota increased with increasing salt concentrations. A maximum was reached at 300-500 m M NaCl. Ota concentrations reached a maximum 4 h after an osmotic upshock. Hyperosmolarity also caused an increase in cellular Ota concentrations. In addition to osmolarity Ota expression was regulated by the growth phase. Expression of Ota as well as transport of betaine was downregulated in the presence of glycine betaine. Impact of elasticity on the piezoresponse of adjacent ferroelectric domains investigated by scanning force microscopy
As a consequence of elasticity, mechanical deformations of crystals occur on
a length scale comparable to their thickness. This is exemplified by applying a
homogeneous electric field to a multi-domain ferroelectric crystal: as one
domain is expanding the adjacent ones are contracting, leading to clamping at
the domain boundaries. The piezomechanically driven surface corrugation of
micron-sized domain patterns in thick crystals using large-area top electrodes
is thus drastically suppressed, barely accessible by means of piezoresponse
force microscopy
Phonon plasmon interaction in ternary group-III-nitrides

Lett. 101, 041909 (2012) and may be found at https://doi.org/10.1063/1.4739415.Phonon-plasmon-coupling in the ternary group-III-nitrides InGaN and AlGaN is investigated experimentally and theoretically. Based on the observation of broadening and shifting of the A1(LO) mode in AlGaN upon Si-doping, a lineshape analysis was performed to determine the carrier concentration. The results obtained by this method are in excellent agreement to those from Hall measurements, confirming the validity of the employed model. Finally, neglecting phonon and plasmon damping, the Raman shift of the A1(LO) mode in dependence of the carrier concentration for AlGaN and InGaN is calculated. This enables a fast and contactless determination of carrier concentrations in the future.DFG, 43659573, SFB 787: Halbleiter - Nanophotonik: Materialien, Modelle, Bauelement
Spiral vortices traveling between two rotating defects in the Taylor-Couette system
Numerical calculations of vortex flows in Taylor-Couette systems with counter
rotating cylinders are presented. The full, time dependent Navier-Stokes
equations are solved with a combination of a finite difference and a Galerkin
method. Annular gaps of radius ratio and of several heights are
simulated. They are closed by nonrotating lids that produce localized Ekman
vortices in their vicinity and that prevent axial phase propagation of spiral
vortices. Existence and spatio temporal properties of rotating defects, of
modulated Ekman vortices, and of the spiral vortex structures in the bulk are
elucidated in quantitative detail.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
