Meanders and the Temperley-Lieb algebra
The statistics of meanders is studied in connection with the Temperley-Lieb
algebra. Each (multi-component) meander corresponds to a pair of reduced
elements of the algebra. The assignment of a weight per connected component
of meander translates into a bilinear form on the algebra, with a Gram matrix
encoding the fine structure of meander numbers. Here, we calculate the
associated Gram determinant as a function of , and make use of the
orthogonalization process to derive alternative expressions for meander numbers

Electrical properties of breast cancer cells from impedance measurement of cell suspensions
Impedance spectroscopy of biological cells has been used to monitor cell status, e.g. cell proliferation, viability, etc. It is also a fundamental method for the study of the electrical properties of cells which has been utilised for cell identification in investigations of cell behaviour in the presence of an applied electric field, e.g. electroporation. There are two standard methods for impedance measurement on cells. The use of microelectrodes for single cell impedance measurement is one method to realise the measurement, but the variations between individual cells introduce significant measurement errors. Another method to measure electrical properties is by the measurement of cell suspensions, i.e. a group of cells within a culture medium or buffer. This paper presents an investigation of the impedance of normal and cancerous breast cells in suspension using the Maxwell-Wagner mixture theory to analyse the results and extract the electrical parameters of a single cell. The results show that normal and different stages of cancer breast cells can be distinguished by the conductivity presented by each cell. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd
Computational Modeling of Dynamical Systems
In this short note, we discuss the basic approach to computational modeling
of dynamical systems. If a dynamical system contains multiple time scales,
ranging from very fast to slow, computational solution of the dynamical system
can be very costly. By resolving the fast time scales in a short time
simulation, a model for the effect of the small time scale variation on large
time scales can be determined, making solution possible on a long time
interval. This process of computational modeling can be completely automated.
Two examples are presented, including a simple model problem oscillating at a
time scale of 1e-9 computed over the time interval [0,100], and a lattice
consisting of large and small point masses
Effects of neighborhood disadvantage on problem gambling and alcohol abuse
Background and aims:
Based on social disorganization theory, the present study examined the effects of neighborhood disadvantage on gambling behaviors and problems as well as on alcohol use and abuse.
Methods:
Findings were based on a combined sample of two representative U.S. telephone surveys of gambling and substance use. One survey (n = 2,631) included adults 18 years and older and the second survey (2,274) included young people aged 14–21 years old.
Results:
Neighborhood disadvantage had a highly significant effect on problem gambling over and above the significant individual effects of gender, age, race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Alcohol abuse did not show the same relationship to neighborhood disadvantage as did problem gambling. Furthermore, when neighborhood disadvantage was high and individual socioeconomic status was low, the highest levels of problem gambling were observed.
Conclusions:
This study provides strong evidence for the effects of neighborhood ecology on the occurrence of problem gambling
Translational Symmetry Breaking in the Superconducting State of the Cuprates: Analysis of the Quasiparticle Density of States
Motivated by the recent STM experiments of J.E. Hoffman et.al. and C. Howald
et.al., we study the effects of weak translational symmetry breaking on the
quasiparticle spectrum of a d-wave superconductor. We develop a general
formalism to discuss periodic charge order, as well as quasiparticle scattering
off localized defects. We argue that the STM experiments in
cannot be explained using a simple charge density
wave order parameter, but are consistent with the presence of a periodic
modulation in the electron hopping or pairing amplitude. We review the effects
of randomness and pinning of the charge order and compare it to the impurity
scattering of quasiparticles. We also discuss implications of weak

Models for Type I X-Ray Bursts with Improved Nuclear Physics
Multi-zone models of Type I X-ray bursts are presented that use an adaptive
nuclear reaction network of unprecedented size, up to 1300 isotopes. Sequences
of up to 15 bursts are followed for two choices of accretion rate and
metallicity. At 0.1 Eddington (and 0.02 Eddington for low metallicity),
combined hydrogen-helium flashes occur. The rise times, shapes, and tails of
these light curves are sensitive to the efficiency of nuclear burning at
various waiting points along the rp-process path and these sensitivities are
explored. The bursts show "compositional inertia", in that their properties
depend on the fact that accretion occurs onto the ashes of previous bursts
which contain left-over hydrogen, helium and CNO nuclei. This acts to reduce
the sensitivity of burst properties to metallicity. For the accretion rates
studied, only the first anomalous burst in one model produces nuclei as heavy
as A=100, other bursts make chiefly nuclei with A~64. The amount of carbon
remaining after hydrogen-helium bursts is typically <1% by mass, and decreases
further as the ashes are periodically heated by subsequent bursts. At the lower
accretion rate of 0.02 Eddington and solar metallicity, the bursts ignite in a
hydrogen-free helium layer. At the base of this layer, up to 90% of the helium
has already burned to carbon prior to the unstable ignition. These
helium-ignited bursts have briefer, brighter light curves with shorter tails,
very rapid rise times (<0.1 s), and ashes lighter than the iron group.Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal (42 pages; 27 figures
Magnetic stress as a driving force of structural distortions: the case of CrN
We show that the observed transition from rocksalt to orthorhombic P
symmetry in CrN can be understood in terms of stress anisotropy. Using local
spin density functional theory, we find that the imbalance between stress
stored in spin-paired and spin-unpaired Cr nearest neighbors causes the
rocksalt structure to be unstable against distortions and justifies the
observed antiferromagnetic ordering. This stress has a purely magnetic origin,
and may be important in any system where the coupling between spin ordering and

Blueshifted galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We examine a sample of 65 galaxies in the Virgo cluster with negative radial
velocities relative to the Local Group. Some features of this sample are
pointed out. All of these objects are positioned compactly within a virial zone
of radius 6{\deg} in the cluster, but their centroid is displaced relative to
the dynamic center of the cluster, M87, by 1.1{\deg} to the northwest. The
dwarf galaxies in this sample are clumped on a scale of ~10' (50 kpc). The
observed asymmetry in the distribution of the blueshifted galaxies may be
caused by infall of a group of galaxies around M86 onto the main body of the
cluster. We offer another attempt to explain this phenomenon, assuming a mutual
tangential velocity of ~300 km/s between the Local Group and the Virgo cluster
