Calculation of the Stability Index in Parameter-Dependent Calculus of Variations Problems: Buckling of a Twisted Elastic Strut
We consider the problem of minimizing the energy of an inextensible elastic strut with length 1 subject to an imposed twist angle and force. In a standard calculus of variations approach, one first locates equilibria by solving the Euler--Lagrange ODE with boundary conditions at arclength values 0 and 1. Then one classifies each equilibrium by counting conjugate points, with local minima corresponding to equilibria with no conjugate points. These conjugate points are arclength values at which a second ODE (the Jacobi equation) has a solution vanishing at and .
Finding conjugate points normally involves the numerical solution of a set of initial value problems for the Jacobi equation. For problems involving a parameter , such as the force or twist angle in the elastic strut, this computation must be repeated for every value of of interest.
Here we present an alternative approach that takes advantage of the presence of a parameter . Rather than search for conjugate points at a fixed value of , we search for a set of special parameter values (with corresponding Jacobi solution \bfzeta^m) for which is a conjugate point. We show that, under appropriate assumptions, the index of an equilibrium at any equals the number of these \bfzeta^m for which \langle \bfzeta^m, \Op \bfzeta^m \rangle < 0, where \Op is the Jacobi differential operator at . This computation is particularly simple when appears linearly in \Op.
We apply this approach to the elastic strut, in which the force appears linearly in \Op, and, as a result, we locate the conjugate points for any twisted unbuckled rod configuration without resorting to numerical solution of differential equations. In addition, we numerically compute two-dimensional sheets of buckled equilibria (as the two parameters of force and twist are varied) via a coordinated family of one-dimensional parameter continuation computations. Conjugate points for these buckled equilibria are determined by numerical solution of the Jacobi ODE

Sensory sensitivity as a link between concussive traumatic brain injury and PTSD.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most common injuries to military personnel, a population often exposed to stressful stimuli and emotional trauma. Changes in sensory processing after TBI might contribute to TBI-post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) comorbidity. Combining an animal model of TBI with an animal model of emotional trauma, we reveal an interaction between auditory sensitivity after TBI and fear conditioning where 75 dB white noise alone evokes a phonophobia-like phenotype and when paired with footshocks, fear is robustly enhanced. TBI reduced neuronal activity in the hippocampus but increased activity in the ipsilateral lateral amygdala (LA) when exposed to white noise. The white noise effect in LA was driven by increased activity in neurons projecting from ipsilateral auditory thalamus (medial geniculate nucleus). These data suggest that altered sensory processing within subcortical sensory-emotional circuitry after TBI results in neutral stimuli adopting aversive properties with a corresponding impact on facilitating trauma memories and may contribute to TBI-PTSD comorbidity
OH (1720 MHz) Masers: A Multiwavelength Study of the Interaction between the W51C Supernova Remnant and the W51B Star Forming Region
We present a comprehensive view of the W51B HII region complex and the W51C
supernova remnant (SNR) using new radio observations from the VLA, VLBA,
MERLIN, JCMT, and CSO along with archival data from Spitzer, ROSAT, ASCA, and
Chandra. Our VLA data include the first 400 cm (74 MHz) continuum image of W51
at high resolution (88 arcsec). The 400 cm image shows non-thermal emission
surrounding the G49.2-0.3 HII region, and a compact source of non-thermal
emission (W51B_NT) coincident with the previously-identified OH (1720 MHz)
maser spots, non-thermal 21 and 90 cm emission, and a hard X-ray source.
W51B_NT falls within the region of high likelihood for the position of TeV
gamma-ray emission. Using the VLBA three OH (1720 MHz) maser spots are detected
in the vicinity of W51B_NT with sizes of 60 to 300 AU and Zeeman effect
magnetic field strengths of 1.5 to 2.2 mG. The multiwavelength data demonstrate
that the northern end of the W51B HII region complex has been partly enveloped
by the advancing W51C SNR and this interaction explains the presence of W51B_NT
and the OH masers. This interaction also appears in the thermal molecular gas
which partially encircles W51B_NT and exhibits narrow pre-shock (DeltaV 5 km/s)
and broad post-shock (DeltaV 20 km/s) velocity components. RADEX radiative
transfer modeling of these two components yield physical conditions consistent
with the passage of a non-dissociative C-type shock. Confirmation of the
W51B/W51C interaction provides additional evidence in favor of this region
being one of the best candidates for hadronic particle acceleration known thus

Instrument manual for the retarding ion mass spectrometer on Dynamics Explorer-1
The retarding ion mass spectrometer (RIMS) for Dynamics Explorer-1 is an instrument designed to measure the details of the thermal plasma distribution. It combines the ion temperature determining capability of the retarding potential analyzer with the compositional capabilities of the mass spectrometer and adds multiple sensor heads to sample all directions relative to the spacecraft ram direction. This manual provides a functional description of the RIMS, the instrument calibration, and a description of the commands which can be stored in the instrument logic to control its operation
Microrheology, stress fluctuations and active behavior of living cells
We report the first measurements of the intrinsic strain fluctuations of
living cells using a recently-developed tracer correlation technique along with
a theoretical framework for interpreting such data in heterogeneous media with
non-thermal driving. The fluctuations' spatial and temporal correlations
indicate that the cytoskeleton can be treated as a course-grained continuum
with power-law rheology, driven by a spatially random stress tensor field.
Combined with recent cell rheology results, our data imply that intracellular
stress fluctuations have a nearly power spectrum, as expected for

Magnetic anisotropy modulation of magnetite in Fe3O4/BaTiO3(100) epitaxial structures
Temperature dependent magnetometry and transport measurements on epitaxial
Fe3O4 films grown on BaTiO3(100) single crystals by molecular beam epitaxy show
a series of discontinuities, that are due to changes in the magnetic anisotropy
induced by strain in the different crystal phases of BaTiO3. The magnetite film
is under tensile strain at room temperature, which is ascribed to the lattice
expansion of BaTiO3 at the cubic to tetragonal transition, indicating that the
magnetite film is relaxed at the growth temperature. From the magnetization
versus temperature curves, the variation in the magnetic anisotropy is
determined and compared with the magnetoelastic anisotropies. These results
demonstrate the possibility of using the piezoelectric response of BaTiO3 to
modulate the magnetic anisotropy of magnetite films.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
