    Willful Misinterpretation

My work in painting and sculpture is an ongoing problem-solving activity in which the issues of how to present images or objects, and how to make a compelling piece of art, frequently clash. By combining a sense of earnestness in the means in which my work is made with self-conscious and deliberately awkward choices, my work occupies a place between pleasureful, visual abandon and the calculated, humorously abject. Through combinations of disparate elements, formal choices, and attitudes towards subject matter, I am making work that seeks to create new images within contradictions

Valuation of Cases for Settlement: Theory and Practice

    Get PDF
Trial lawyers frequently talk about the value of their cases when they are counseling clients\u27 negotiating with opposing counsel, or conversing with their fellow attorneys. The term value may have several definitions when referring to cases, but most attorneys intend it to mean the amount at which they expect a case to settle. However, despite the frequency with which they speak of value, the subject remains cloaked with a miasma of lawyer folklore

Real inequality in Europe since 1500

    Get PDF
Introducing a concept of real, as opposed to nominal, inequality of income or wealth suggests some historical reinterpretations, buttressed by a closer look at consumption by the rich. The purchasing powers of different income classes depend on how relative prices move. Relative prices affected real inequality more strongly in earlier centuries than in the twentieth. Between 1500 and about 1800, staple food and fuels became dearer, while luxury goods, especially servants, became cheaper, greatly widening the inequality of lifestyles. Peace, industrialization, and globalization reversed this inegalitarian price effect in the nineteenth century, at least for England

Primitives in the Hopf algebra of projective Sn-representations

AbstractWe study the Z/2xN-graded abelian group which for 4≤nε N is generated by the irreducible projective representations of An (respectively of Sn) in Z/2-grading 0 (respectively 1). This has Hopf algebra structure over L=Z[λ]/(λ3=2λ), where the action of λ is inducing and restricting between Sn and An. Working over L results in a considerable simplification to the proof of our structure theorem for the above. Our method is similar to Liulevicius' idea for studying the Z-Hopf algebra of ordinary representations of Sn. Among the results is the determination of all primitives in the above L-Hopf algebra

Assessing the economic impact of an emissions trading scheme on agroforestry in Australia’s northern grazing systems

Although agriculture generates a significant portion of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions, it also has the potential to sequester large quantities of emissions through changed land use management such as agroforestry. Whilst there is an extensive amount of agroforestry literature, little has been written on the economic consequences of adopting silvopastoral systems in northern Australia. This paper reports the economic feasibility of adopting complimentary agroforestry systems in the low rainfall region of northern Australia. The analysis incorporates the dynamic tradeoffs between tree and pasture growth, carbon sequestration, cleared regrowth decomposition rates and livestock methane emissions in a bioeconomic model. The results suggest there are financial benefits for landholders who integrate complimentary agroforestry activities into existing grazing operations depending on the rules of the carbon accounting framework used.carbon sequestration, financial analysis, carbon accounting framework, Agroforestry, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,
