Sketches of Little Known Iowa Ornithologists

    Get PDF
It is not a rare event when one is making a detailed study of ornithology to come upon the names of older students of the subject that are apparently unknown to the ornithological public. Their only contribution to the subject may have been a regional or local list published in some obscure periodical or a set of unpublished journals kept over a period of years. It is my purpose to make an attempt to fill in some of these unknowns in our knowledge of historical ornithology. This paper contains three biographies: J. H. Paarmann; Hugo H. Schroder; Burtis H. Wilson

Assessing Campus Programs and Events: Using One-Item Measures and Technology

    Get PDF
There is an increasing need for evaluating programs and events to ensure that attendees are reaching expected learning outcomes. In the critical, qualitative research study, we gain feedback about events through a one-item open ended questionnaire through an application called sli.do. In this study, we expect to gain insight on student reactions to the attended programs and events. Recommendations for one-item assessments and using sli.do are given

Contributions to the Ornithology of the Upper Mississippi Valley - Pt. I. An Unpublished List by J. H. Paarmann on the Birds of Davenport, Iowa, and Vicinity

Recently the University of South Carolina press published an outstanding volume on the avifauna of that state. In years past other states have published similar works concerning their respective avifaunas. But alas, Iowa, or the entire Middle Western region for that matter, have remained in the background. This is not apparently because of the lack of interest in its bird life, or relative abundance of observers; but simply a matter of circumstances that can be rectified only with the passing of years. The 1907 list of The Birds of Iowa by R. M. Anderson is outdated in some respects while the 1934 list of Philip DuMont is now a rare collector’s item; rare enough indeed so that the majority of students are unable to obtain copies. The only other source of information is to page through the issues of Iowa Bird Life and one can receive an idea of the changes and additions to our Iowa avifauna

Recent Nesting of the American Egret in Iowa

A recent paper by the author (Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science; 54:317-323) brought up to date recent observations of the American Egret (Casmerodius albus egretta) in Iowa which was followed by an excellent paper in IOWA BIRD LIFE by Charles A. Stewart which covered past records as well as the historical aspect. However, I wish to add a few more words to the subject concerning this bird in Iowa due to the recent discovery of a new nesting colony

Taxonomizing Information Practices in a Large Conspiracy Movement: Using Early QAnon as a Case Study

This paper presents a taxonomy of the information practices apparent in an imageboard discussion thread that was influential in jump-starting the worldwide QAnon movement. After introducing QAnon with a review of literature, the author examines 4Chan /pol/ thread #147547939 (key in introducing multiple key elements of the QAnon narrative) to enumerate and classify the information practices deployed by discussion participants. In conclusion, the paper expands beyond existing research’s previous focus on outright fabrication, showing that early QAnon participants’ information practices are also defined in large part by suspicious and idiosyncratic modes of reading authentic sources, not simply the propagation of falsehoods
