The interstellar D1 line at high resolution
Observations at a resolving power or a velocity resolution are reported of the interstellar D(sub 1) line of Na I in the spectra of gamma Cas, delta Ori, epsilon Ori, pi Sco, delta Cyg, and alpha Cyg. An echelle grating was used in a double-pass configuration with a CCD detector in the coude spectrograph of the 2.7 m reflector at McDonald Observatory. At least 42 kinematically distinct clouds are detected along the light paths to the five more distant stars, in addition to a single cloud seen toward delta Cyg. The absorption lines arising in 13 of the clouds are sufficiently narrow and unblended to reveal clearly resolved hyperfine structure components split by 1.05 km/s. An additional 13 clouds apparently show comparably narrow, but more strongly blended, lines. For each individual cloud, upper limits T(sub max) and (v sub t)(sub max) on the temperature and the turbulent velocity, respectively, are derived by fitting the observed lines with theoretical absorption profiles
The extent of the local hi halo
Forty-five high-latitude, OB stars have been observed in the Ly alpha and 21 cm lines of HI in an effort to map out the vertical distribution and extent of the local HI halo. The 25 stars for which a reliable HI colum density can be obtained from Ly alpha lie between 60 and 3100 pc from the plane. The principal result is that the total column density of HI at z 1 kpc is, on the average, 5 + or - 3 x 10 the 19th power/sq cm, or 15% of the total sub HI. At relatively low z the data toward some stars suggest a low effective scale height and fairly high average foreground density, while toward others the effective scale height is large and the average density is low. This can be understood as the result of irregularities in the interstellar medium. A model with half of the HI mass in clouds having radii of a few pc and a Gaussian vertical distribution with sigma sub 2 = 135 pc, and half of the mass in an exponential component with a scale height of 500 pc, gives a satisfactory fit to the data. The technique of comparing Ly alpha and 21 cm column densities is also used to discuss the problem of estimating the distance to several possibly subluminous stars
Li I and K I Scatter in Cool Pleiades Dwarfs
We utilize high-resolution (R~60,000), high S/N (~100) spectroscopy of 17
cool Pleiades dwarfs to examine the confounding star-to-star scatter in the
6707 Li I line strengths in this young cluster. Our Pleiads, selected for their
small projected rotational velocity and modest chromospheric emission, evince
substantial scatter in the linestrengths of 6707 Li I feature that is absent in
the 7699 K I resonance line. The Li I scatter is not correlated with that in
the high-excitation 7774 O I feature, and the magnitude of the former is
greater than the latter despite the larger temperature sensitivity of the O I
feature. These results suggest that systematic errors in linestrength
measurements due to blending, color (or color-based T_eff) errors, or line
formation effects related to an overlying chromosphere are not the principal
source of Li I scatter in our stars. There do exist analytic spot models that
can produce the observed Li scatter without introducing scatter in the K I line
strengths or the color-magnitude diagram. However, these models predict factor
of >3 differences in abundances derived from the subordinate 6104 and resonance
6707 Li I features; we find no difference in the abundances determined from
these two features. These analytic spot models also predict CN line strengths
significantly larger than we observe in our spectra. The simplest explanation
of the Li, K, CN, and photometric data is that there must be a real abundance
component to the Pleiades Li dispersion. We suggest that this real abundance
component is the manifestation of relic differences in erstwhile
pre-main-sequence Li burning caused by effects of surface activity on stellar

Cygnus A at 99 GHz: Observations of the three principal components and interpretation of the central source
The three principal emission components of Cygnus A were observed at 99 GHz, the highest frequency at which radio measurements of this source have been accomplished. The observations show no definite indication of a high-frequency cutoff in the spectrum of the compact central component, which perhaps may be attributed to an optically thin synchrotron source that peaks at a frequency of several hundred GHz
Interferometric Studies of Interstellar Calcium Lines
Interferometric, photoelectric scans of the interstellar calcium K-lines in the spectra of 65 stars are presented. The scans were obtained with a PEPSIOS spectrometer having a passband with a full half-intensity width of 1.0 kms(-1) or 0.013A. The fivefold improvement in resolution over that used by Adams reveals numerous line components which correspond very well to those of the interstellar sodium lines, apart from frequent differences in relative intensities

This White Paper is the product of the collaborative effort of the University of Nebraska/Lincoln (UNL) Law and Psychology Program, the University of Nebraska/Omaha (UNO) Consortium for Crime and Justice Research and the UNO Juvenile Justice Institute. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview for understanding, testing, and developing Evidence Based Practice (EBP) interventions that make rehabilitative services available to children in the juvenile justice system. The paper begins with a summary of a proposal for a classification system of EBP programs in the Juvenile Justice System in Nebraska and then goes on to explain the logic of the classification system
Ab-initio spin dynamics applied to nanoparticles: canted magnetism of a finite Co chain along a Pt(111) surface step edge
In order to search for the magnetic ground state of surface nanostructures we
extended first principles adiabatic spin dynamics to the case of fully
relativistic electron scattering. Our method relies on a constrained density
functional theory whereby the evolution of the orientations of the spin-moments
results from a semi-classical Landau-Lifshitz equation. This approach is
applied to a study of the ground state of a finite Co chain placed along a step
edge of a Pt(111) surface. As far as the ground state spin orientation is
concerned we obtain excellent agreement with the experiment. Furthermore we
observe noncollinearity of the atom-resolved spin and orbital moments. In terms
of magnetic force theorem calculations we also demonstrate how a reduction of
