Readiness for Reform in Middle Schools Adopting PowerTeaching for Mathematics Instruction

    Get PDF
Federal policy makers and school leaders increasingly recognize middle school math as a turning point in students’ academic success, especially in predicting high school graduation rates. New i3 scale-up grants allow large-scale implementation of proven reforms that increase student achievement. PowerTeaching (PT) is one such reform that centers on cooperative learning. A five year technologically-facilitated scale-up of PowerTeaching will bring the reform to 185 high-needs middle schools nationwide. In this pilot phase of the project, we will examine eight schools’ readiness for reform. Teacher questionnaires, interviews with school leaders, PT coaches and teachers, coaching feedback, and walk-through observation data will be used to determine school characteristics that impacted the initial implementation of the PT model and promote formative evaluation efforts

The Power of Simple Hands-On Cyberforensics Exercises: A Guide for Faculty

    No full text
Computer forensics is a hands-on discipline. Introductory skills, however, can be taught using simple exercises that require neither expensive laboratory facilities nor even face-to-face courses. This paper describes a simple floppy disk analysis project that allows an instructor to address issues ranging from the computer forensics process and basics of file systems to long file names, file signatures, and hashing. Projects are essential to teaching this discipline as they support active learning, constructivism, and active learning. These hands-on projects also offer an opportunity for courses to be taught online and for students to build their own toolkits using open source or commercial software

Pretraining with Adolescents in Group Psychotherapy: A Special Case of Therapist Iatrogenic Effects

    No full text
The effects of pretraining adolescents for group psychotherapy were investigated. Twenty-one adolescents from a residential treatment facility participated. Pretraining addressed the processes of risk taking, self-disclosure, and giving and receiving feedback through verbal, video, and/or experiential instruction and were compared with a control condition. Pretraining was not found to be beneficial when measured on satisfaction, therapeutic factors, and peer relation factors. However, a potential confounding variable was the exposure to a “psychonoxious” therapist who was found to have a significantly negative impact on group satisfaction ratings. The implications of group pretraining for adolescents are considered, as are the iatrogenic effects of therapists and the “therapeutic milieu.
