    Get PDF
The study systematically reviews currently available studies which investigate the treatment effect of acupuncture in treating dysphagia. The review also gives a general picture of the characteristics of currently available studies conducted, so as to suggest directions for future clinical studies of this alternative treatment method for treating dysphagia. Sixty published research papers in Simplified Chinese were collected. Eighteen of the collected papers were analyzed. The result of meta-analysis showed positive treatment effect of acupuncture to dysphagia. Future research projects should focus on 1) Non-Chinese population 2) Patients with dysphagia originated from causes other than neurological damage, for example, degenerative diseases 3) Using instrumental swallowing assessment as parameter of outcome measure. Potential bias and limitations of the meta-analysis were discussed.published_or_final_versionSpeech and Hearing SciencesBachelorBachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Science

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of aetiological allergens identifiable by skin prick test alone in patients suffering from chronic rhinitis in Hong Kong, and also compare the clinical history and symptoms of skin prick test-positive versus skin prick test-negative patients. DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: Otorhinolaryngology clinic in Queen Mary Hospital of Hong Kong. PATIENTS: A total of 977 patients suffering from chronic rhinitis were recruited into the study. Skin prick test was performed with a panel of allergens including house dust mites, cockroach, cat, dog, moulds, and pollens. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Skin prick test results and their correlation with symptoms. RESULTS: Of the 977 patients, 651 (67%) had positive skin prick test reactions. The commonest allergen was house dust mite which was positive in 63% of the 977 patients and 95% of those 651 skin prick test-positive patients. The other allergens were in order of cockroach (23%), cat (14%), dog (5%), pollen (4%), and mould (3%). Compared with skin prick test-negative patients, skin prick test-positive patients were more likely to have earlier age of onset of the chronic rhinitis, association with asthma, more severe symptom in the morning, more severe symptoms of itchy nose, sneezing, nasal discharge, itchy eye, and watery eye. CONCLUSIONS: Identifiable aeroallergens could be detected in 67% chronic rhinitis patients by skin prick test alone. House dust mites were the most prevalent causative allergen. There were significant differences of patterns of clinical history and symptoms severity between skin prick test-positive and skin prick test-negative patients.published_or_final_versio

Modeling Spatial Relations of Human Body Parts for Indexing and Retrieving Close Character Interactions

Retrieving pre-captured human motion for analyzing and synthesizing virtual character movement have been widely used in Virtual Reality (VR) and interactive computer graphics applications. In this paper, we propose a new human pose representation, called Spatial Relations of Human Body Parts (SRBP), to represent spatial relations between body parts of the subject(s), which intuitively describes how much the body parts are interacting with each other. Since SRBP is computed from the local structure (i.e. multiple body parts in proximity) of the pose instead of the information from individual or pairwise joints as in previous approaches, the new representation is robust to minor variations of individual joint location. Experimental results show that SRBP outperforms the existing skeleton-based motion retrieval and classification approaches on benchmark databases

The photometric observation of the quasi-simultaneous mutual eclipse and occultation between Europa and Ganymede on 22 August 2021

Mutual events (MEs) are eclipses and occultations among planetary natural satellites. Most of the time, eclipses and occultations occur separately. However, the same satellite pair will exhibit an eclipse and an occultation quasi-simultaneously under particular orbital configurations. This kind of rare event is termed as a quasi-simultaneous mutual event (QSME). During the 2021 campaign of mutual events of jovian satellites, we observed a QSME between Europa and Ganymede. The present study aims to describe and study the event in detail. We observed the QSME with a CCD camera attached to a 300-mm telescope at the Hong Kong Space Museum Sai Kung iObservatory. We obtained the combined flux of Europa and Ganymede from aperture photometry. A geometric model was developed to explain the light curve observed. Our results are compared with theoretical predictions (O-C). We found that our simple geometric model can explain the QSME fairly accurately, and the QSME light curve is a superposition of the light curves of an eclipse and an occultation. Notably, the observed flux drops are within 2.6% of the theoretical predictions. The size of the event central time O-Cs ranges from -14.4 to 43.2 s. Both O-Cs of flux drop and timing are comparable to other studies adopting more complicated models. Given the event rarity, model simplicity and accuracy, we encourage more observations and analysis on QSMEs to improve Solar System ephemerides.Comment: 23 pages, 5 appendixes, 16 figures, 7 table

A cluster of cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome in Hong Kong

BACKGROUND: Information on the clinical features of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) will be of value to physicians caring for patients suspected of having this disorder. METHODS: We abstracted data on the clinical presentation and course of disease in 10 epidemiologically linked Chinese patients (5 men and 5 women 38 to 72 years old) in whom SARS was diagnosed between February 22, 2003, and March 22, 2003, at our hospitals in Hong Kong, China. RESULTS: Exposure between the source patient and subsequent patients ranged from minimal to that between patient and health care provider. The incubation period ranged from 2 to 11 days. All patients presented with fever (temperature, >38°C for over 24 hours), and most presented with rigor, dry cough, dyspnea, malaise, headache, and hypoxemia. Physical examination of the chest revealed crackles and percussion dullness. Lymphopenia was observed in nine patients, and most patients had mildly elevated aminotransferase levels but normal serum creatinine levels. Serial chest radiographs showed progressive air-space disease. Two patients died of progressive respiratory failure; histologic analysis of their lungs showed diffuse alveolar damage. There was no evidence of infection by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, or Legionella pneumophila. All patients received corticosteroid and ribavirin therapy a mean (±SD) of 9.6±5.42 days after the onset of symptoms, and eight were treated earlier with a combination of beta-lactams and macrolide for 4±1.9 days, with no clinical or radiologic efficacy. CONCLUSIONS: SARS appears to be infectious in origin. Fever followed by rapidly progressive respiratory compromise is the key complex of signs and symptoms from which the syndrome derives its name. The microbiologic origins of SARS remain unclear.published_or_final_versio

Precipitating hydrophobic injectable liquid (PHIL; MicroVention, Aliso Viejo, CA, USA) and Squid (Balt, Irvine, CA, USA) are 2 newer liquid embolic agents used in endovascular embolization of cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM). This study aims to investigate and compare the effectiveness and safety profile of the 2 newer liquid embolic agents in the embolization of cerebral AVM. This is a retrospective study on all patients diagnosed with cerebral AVM undergoing endovascular embolization with liquid embolic agents PHIL and Squid admitted to the Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery in Prince of Wales Hospital from January 2014 to June 2021. Twenty-three patients with cerebral AVM were treated with 34 sessions of endovascular embolization with either PHIL or Squid (17 sessions each) liquid embolic agents with a male to female ratio of 2.3:1 (male 16; female 7) and mean age of 44.6 (range, 12 to 67). The mean total nidus obliteration rate per session was 57% (range, 5% to 100%). Twenty-one patients (91.3%) received further embolization, stereotactic radiosurgery, or surgical excision after initial endovascular embolization. There were 2 morbidities (1 neurological and 1 non-neurological, 6%) and no mortalities (0%). All patients had static or improvement in modified Rankin Scale at 3 to 6 months at discharge. PHIL and Squid are effective and safe liquid embolic agents for endovascular embolization of cerebral AVM, achieving satisfactory nidal obliteration rates and patient functional outcomes
