Magnon-induced non-Markovian friction of a domain wall in a ferromagnet

Motivated by the recent study on the quasiparticle-induced friction of solitons in superfluids, we theoretically study magnon-induced intrinsic friction of a domain wall in a one-dimensional ferromagnet. To this end, we start by obtaining the hitherto overlooked dissipative interaction of a domain wall and its quantum magnon bath to linear order in the domain-wall velocity and to quadratic order in magnon fields. An exact expression for the pertinent scattering matrix is obtained with the aid of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. We then derive the magnon-induced frictional force on a domain wall in two different frameworks: time-dependent perturbation theory in quantum mechanics and the Keldysh formalism, which yield identical results. The latter, in particular, allows us to verify the fluctuation-dissipation theorem explicitly by providing both the frictional force and the correlator of the associated stochastic Langevin force. The potential for magnons induced by a domain wall is reflectionless, and thus the resultant frictional force is non-Markovian similarly to the case of solitons in superfluids. They share an intriguing connection to the Abraham-Lorentz force that is well-known for its causality paradox. The dynamical responses of a domain wall are studied under a few simple circumstances, where the non-Markovian nature of the frictional force can be probed experimentally. Our work, in conjunction with the previous study on solitons in superfluids, shows that the macroscopic frictional force on solitons can serve as an effective probe of the microscopic degrees of freedom of the system.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure

Nearly Massless Electrons in the Silicon Interface with a Metal Film

We demonstrate the realization of nearly massless electrons in the most widely used device material, silicon, at the interface with a metal film. Using angle-resolved photoemission, we found that the surface band of a monolayer lead film drives a hole band of the Si inversion layer formed at the interface with the film to have nearly linear dispersion with an effective mass about 20 times lighter than bulk Si and comparable to graphene. The reduction of mass can be accounted for by repulsive interaction between neighboring bands of the metal film and Si substrate. Our result suggests a promising way to take advantage of massless carriers in silicon-based thin-film devices, which can also be applied for various other semiconductor devices.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

A Novel Macroblock Level Rate Control Method for Stereo Video Coding

    Get PDF
To compress stereo video effectively, this paper proposes a novel macroblock (MB) level rate control method based on binocular perception. A binocular just-notification difference (BJND) model based on the parallax matching is first used to describe binocular perception. Then, the proposed rate control method is performed in stereo video coding with four levels, namely, view level, group-of-pictures (GOP) level, frame level, and MB level. In the view level, different proportions of bitrates are allocated for the left and right views of stereo video according to the prestatistical rate allocation proportion. In the GOP level, the total number of bitrates allocated to each GOP is computed and the initial quantization parameter of each GOP is set. In the frame level, the target bits allocated to each frame are computed. In the MB level, visual perception factor, which is measured by the BJND value of MB, is used to adjust the MB level bit allocation, so that the rate control results in line with the human visual characteristics. Experimental results show that the proposed method can control the bitrate more accurately and get better subjective quality of stereo video, compared with other methods

RFID tag antenna which could be mountable on metallic plate is designed and measured for 900MHz band. The proposed antenna consists of ground plane, substrate (εr = 4.7), feed line with shorted circuit and radiating patch with L-shaped slit. The feed line with shorted circuit is designed for the direct impedance matching between the antenna and the RFID microchip. Especially, it is possible to obtain considerably the easy impedance match with the proposed design. Overall dimension of the proposed antenna is 90×54×5mm3. When the antenna is placed in free space and mounted on 125×150mm2, 250×300mm2 metallic plates, the maximum reading distance is 6m, 4.8m and 5.2m, respectively

Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Maintains Hepatic Mitochondrial Homeostasis in Mice

OBJECTIVE: Mitophagy removes damaged mitochondria to maintain cellular homeostasis. Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) expression in the liver plays a crucial role in supporting normal liver functions, but its impact on mitochondrial function is unclear. Here, we identified a new role of AhR in the regulation of mitophagy to control hepatic energy homeostasis. METHODS: In this study, we utilized primary hepatocytes from AhR knockout (KO) mice and AhR knockdown AML12 hepatocytes. An endogenous AhR ligand, kynurenine (Kyn), was used to activate AhR in AML12 hepatocytes. Mitochondrial function and mitophagy process were comprehensively assessed by MitoSOX and mt-Keima fluorescence imaging, Seahorse XF-based oxygen consumption rate measurement, and Mitoplate S-1 mitochondrial substrate utilization analysis. RESULTS: Transcriptomic analysis indicated that mitochondria-related gene sets were dysregulated in AhR KO liver. In both primary mouse hepatocytes and AML12 hepatocyte cell lines, AhR inhibition strongly suppressed mitochondrial respiration rate and substrate utilization. AhR inhibition also blunted the fasting response of several essential autophagy genes and the mitophagy process. We further identified BCL2 interacting protein 3 (BNIP3), a mitophagy receptor that senses nutrient stress, as an AhR target gene. AhR is directly recruited to the Bnip3 genomic locus, and Bnip3 transcription was enhanced by AhR endogenous ligand treatment in wild-type liver and abolished entirely in AhR KO liver. Mechanistically, overexpression of Bnip3 in AhR knockdown cells mitigated the production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) and restored functional mitophagy. CONCLUSIONS: AhR regulation of the mitophagy receptor BNIP3 coordinates hepatic mitochondrial function. Loss of AhR induces mitochondrial ROS production and impairs mitochondrial respiration. These findings provide new insight into how endogenous AhR governs hepatic mitochondrial homeostasis

Bi-Tilt Isolator (BTI) is composed of bi-tilt beveled substrate and slider. The advantages of BTI are that the maximum upload seismic force of structure can be easily controlled and displacement of isolation layer will be reduced. Sliding force, friction force, and impulse force are caused in the slanting process of BTI, nonlinear behavior. A nonlinear mathematical model is derived based on the sliding upwards, sliding downwards, and transition stages. Then, BTI element of nonlinear analysis program, GENDYN, is developed by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method, the discretized ordinary differential equation for three movement stages of BTI. Then, test set-up of superstructure installed with BTI is tested and recorded the real displacement and acceleration responses under conditions of full lubrication, mild lubrication, and without lubrication between interface of bi-tilt beveled substrate and slider with three various initial displacements. The comparison of simulation results and test results shows the following: (1) root mean square error is below 1.35% for WD40 sprayed, 0.47% for WD40 whipped, and 0.54% for without lubrication, respectively; (2) the maximum root mean square error for simulating with cubic polynomial function of friction is much less than those of constant friction except conditions of full lubrication, which are not affected by kinetic friction force; (3) application of cubic polynomial function for simulating friction of BTI with three different lubricated conditions can perform very fine simulation results, compared with the test results. This proposed mathematical model and BTI element of GENDYN program, using cubic polynomial function of friction, perform fine simulation capability to assess nonlinear isolation effect of structure installed with BTI
