    Rapidly Rotating Fermi Gases

We show that the density profile of a Fermi gas in rapidly rotating potential will develop prominent features reflecting the underlying Landau level like energy spectrum. Depending on the aspect ratio of the trap, these features can be a sequence of ellipsoidal volumes or a sequence of quantized steps.Comment: 4 pages, 1 postscript fil

Competition between Vortex Unbinding and Tunneling in an Optical Lattice

We study a system of two-dimensional Bose gases trapped in minima of a deep one-dimensional optical lattice potential. Increasing the tunneling amplitude between adjacent gases drives a deconfinement transition to a phase where coherence is established between neighboring two-dimensional gases. We compute the signature of this transition in the interference pattern of the system as well as in its rotational response, which provides a direct measurement of the superfluidity in the system.Comment: 4+ pages, 1 figur

The Diffusion of the Magnetization Profile in the XX-model

By the C∗C^*-algebraic method, we investigate the magnetization profile in the intermediate time of diffusion. We observe a transition from monotone profile to non-monotone profile. This transition is purely thermal.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

Tethering forces of secretory granules measured with optical tweezers.

Fusion of a vesicle with its target membrane is preceded by tethering or docking. However, the physical mechanism of vesicle-tethering is unknown. To study this mechanism, we used eosinophil secretory granules, which undergo stimulated homotypic fusion events inside the cell during degranulation. Using a dual optical trap system, we observed tether formation between isolated eosinophil secretory granules. The results show that secretory granules interact stochastically with a target membrane forming physical tethers linking the vesicle and target membrane, rather than via interactions with the cytoskeleton. The necessary components are membrane-associated, and the addition of cytosolic components is not required. Tether-lifetime measurements as a function of applied mechanical force revealed at least three kinetically distinct tethered states. The tethered-state lifetimes of isolated eosinophil granules match the residence times of chromaffin granules at the plasma membrane in intact cells, suggesting that the tethering mechanisms reported here may represent the physiological mechanisms of vesicle-tethering in the cell

First and Second Sound Modes of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Harmonic Trap

We have calculated the first and second sound modes of a dilute interacting Bose gas in a spherical trap for temperatures (0.6<T/Tc<1.20.6<T/T_{c}<1.2) and for systems with 10410^4 to 10810^8 particles. The second sound modes (which exist only below TcT_{c}) generally have a stronger temperature dependence than the first sound modes. The puzzling temperature variations of the sound modes near TcT_{c} recently observed at JILA in systems with 10310^3 particles match surprisingly well with those of the first and second sound modes of much larger systems.Comment: a shorten version, more discussions are given on the nature of the second sound. A long footnote on the recent work of Zaremba, Griffin, and Nikuni (cond-mat/9705134) is added, the spectrum of the (\ell=1, n_2=0) mode is included in fig.

Spin correlation and Discrete symmetry in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study spin correlations in Bose-Einstein condensates of spin 1 bosons with scatterings dominated by a total spin equal 2 channel. We show the low energy spin dynamics in the system can be mapped into an o(n)o(n) nonlinear sigma model(NLσ\sigmaM). n=3n=3 at the zero magnetic field limit and n=2n=2 in the presence of weak magnetic fields. In an ordered phase, the ground state has a hidden Z2Z_2 symmetry and is degenerate under the group [U(1)×Sn−1]/Z2[U(1)\times S^{n-1}]/Z_2. We explore consequences of the hidden symmetry and propose some measurements to probe it.Comment: 4 pages; published version in Phys. Rev. Lett. vol 87, 080401-1(2001
