Spin-glass-like state in GdCu: role of phase separation and magnetic frustration
We report investigations on the ground state magnetic properties of
intermetallic compound GdCu through dc magnetization measurements. GdCu
undergoes first order martensitic type structural transition over a wide
temperature window of coexisting phases. The high temperature cubic and the low
temperature orthorhombic phases have different magnetic character and they show
antiferromagnetic and helimagnetic orderings below 145 K and 45 K respectively.
We observe clear signature of a glassy magnetic phase below the helimagnetic
ordering temperature, which is marked by thermomagnetic irreversibility, aging
and memory effects. The glassy magnetic phase in GdCu is found to be rather
intriguing with its origin lies in the interfacial frustration due to distinct
magnetic character of the coexisting phases.Comment: Physical Review B 83, 134427 (2011
Dynamics of thermalisation in small Hubbard-model systems
We study numerically the thermalisation and temporal evolution of the reduced
density matrix for a two-site subsystem of a fermionic Hubbard model prepared
far from equilibrium at a definite energy. Even for very small systems near
quantum degeneracy, the subsystem can reach a steady state resembling
equilibrium. This occurs for a non-perturbative coupling between the subsystem
and the rest of the lattice where relaxation to equilibrium is Gaussian in
time, in sharp contrast to perturbative results. We find similar results for
random couplings, suggesting such behaviour is generic for small systems.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

"Low-state" Black Hole Accretion in Nearby Galaxies
I summarize the main observational properties of low-luminosity AGNs in
nearby galaxies to argue that they are the high-mass analogs of black hole
X-ray binaries in the "low/hard" state. The principal characteristics of
low-state AGNs can be accommodated with a scenario in which the central engine
is comprised of three components: an optically thick, geometrically accretion
disk with a truncated inner radius, a radiatively inefficient flow, and a
compact jet.Comment: 8 pages. To appear in From X-ray Binaries to Quasars: Black Hole

Noncommutative D-Brane in Non-Constant NS-NS B Field Background
We show that when the field strength H of the NS-NS B field does not vanish,
the coordinates X and momenta P of an open string endpoints satisfy a set of
mixed commutation relations among themselves. Identifying X and P with the
coordinates and derivatives of the D-brane world volume, we find a new type of
noncommutative spaces which is very different from those associated with a
constant B field background.Comment: 11 pages, Latex, minor modification
A Scanned Perturbation Technique For Imaging Electromagnetic Standing Wave Patterns of Microwave Cavities
We have developed a method to measure the electric field standing wave
distributions in a microwave resonator using a scanned perturbation technique.
Fast and reliable solutions to the Helmholtz equation (and to the Schrodinger
equation for two dimensional systems) with arbitrarily-shaped boundaries are
obtained. We use a pin perturbation to image primarily the microwave electric
field amplitude, and we demonstrate the ability to image broken time-reversal
symmetry standing wave patterns produced with a magnetized ferrite in the
cavity. The whole cavity, including areas very close to the walls, can be
imaged using this technique with high spatial resolution over a broad range of
frequencies.Comment: To be published in Review of Scientific Instruments,September, 199

The gene regulatory network is viewed as a stochastic dynamic model, which consists of the noisy gene measurement from microarray and the gene regulation first-order autoregressive (AR) stochastic dynamic process. By using the EM algorithm, both the model parameters and the actual values of the gene expression levels can be identified simultaneously. Moreover, the algorithm can deal with the sparse parameter identification and the noisy data in an efficient way. It is also shown that the EM algorithm can handle the microarray gene expression data with large number of variables but a small number of observations. The gene expression stochastic dynamic models for four real-world gene expression data sets are constructed to demonstrate the advantages of the introduced algorithm. Several indices are proposed to evaluate the models of inferred gene regulatory networks, and the relevant biological properties are discussed

SLS Processing Studies of Nylon 11 Nanocomposites
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is widely used for rapid prototyping/manufacturing of
nylon 11 and nylon 12 parts. This processing technique has not been explored for
nylon nanocomposites. This study investigates the technicalities of processing nylon
11-clay and nylon-carbon nanofiber nanocomposites with SLS. Microstructural
analyses of the SLS powders and parts were conducted under SEM. Results suggest
that SLS processing is possible with the new nylon 11 nanocomposites. Yet the SLS
parts built have inferior properties relative to those of injection molding, suggesting
that more fine tuning for the processing is required.Mechanical Engineerin
