    Hydrothermal liquefaction versus catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of a bioethanol production stillage residue to platform chemicals:A comparative study

    Biobased chemicals like phenols and aromatics are preferably produced from cheap biomass waste streams. In this work, we have explored the potential of a eucalyptus-derived second generation bioethanol production stillage (BPS) residue for this purpose. A comparative study between a hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) and a catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step, as well as a 2-step HTL-HDO approach is reported, targeting at value-added low molecular weight platform chemicals (mainly alkylphenols and aromatics). HDO was observed to be a more suitable strategy than HTL for the production of organic oils enriched in valuable monomers. The direct HDO of the BPS using a commercial Ru/C catalyst at 450 degrees C and 100 bar H-2 pressure led to an organic product oil (30.7 wt%) with a total monomer yield of 25.2 wt% (13.2 wt% of alkylphenolic+aromatics), compared to a 53.2 wt% of a product oil with 10.0 wt% monomers for the HTL step (305 degrees C). A 2-step HTL-HDO strategy was compared with the direct HDO approach. Comparable alkylphenolic+aromatic yields were obtained through this approach based on initial BPS intake (13.2 wt% vs 12.3 wt% for the direct HDO and HTL-HDO approach, respectively). Lower HTL temperatures (305 degrees C) for the first step are preferred to prevent over hydrogenation in the subsequent HDO step. As such, HTL appears a suitable pre-treatment for BPS and can (i) solve the issues related to the feeding of solids in pressurized continuous reactors for HDO and (ii) prevent coke formation during the HDO step, thus improving catalyst stability and durability

    Pyrolytic lignin:A promising biorefinery feedstock for the production of fuels and valuable chemicals

    Lignocellulosic biomass is a key feedstock for the sustainable production of biofuels, biobased chemicals and performance materials. Biomass can be efficiently converted into pyrolysis liquids (also known as bio-oils) by the well-established fast pyrolysis technology. Currently, there is significant interest in the application of fast pyrolysis technology as principle biomass conversion technology due to its feedstock flexibility, low cost and high energy conversion efficiency, with many emerging commercial enterprises being established around the globe. Upgrading of the bio-oils is a requisite, and is complicated by its complex and heterogeneous organic nature. Pyrolysis liquids may be further separated by a simple water fractionation, yielding an aqueous sugar-rich phase and a water-insoluble pyrolytic lignin (PL) fraction. This separation step allows the use of dedicated conversion strategies for each fraction, which can be highly advantageous due to their differences in composition and reactivity. For example, the sugar-rich fractions can be used for fermentation, while the phenolic-rich PL is a particularly promising feedstock for the production of a wide range of platform chemicals and energy-dense streams upon depolymerization. To aid the emerging use of PL, novel characterization techniques and valorization strategies are being explored. In this review, the fast pyrolysis process and PL characterization efforts are discussed in detail, followed by the state-of-the-art regarding PL processing using both oxidative and reductive (catalytic) strategies, as well as a combination thereof. Possible applications are discussed and recommendations for future research are provided

    Análisis sobre la influencia de la densidad en la termografía de infrarrojos y el alcance de esta técnica en la detección de defectos internos en la madera

    This paper shows the results of a laboratory phase for the determination of the 1limits of infrared thermography in detecting internal defects in wood and, furthermore, it analyses how the density of this material can influence the surface temperature displayed in a thermogram. To this end, experimental work is carried out whereby a series of work and environmental parameters are monitored (such as environmental temperature, relative humidity, distance to target), and the process is systematized by using pieces of different wood species (different densities) and by devising a set of samples for which various possible cases are analysed in terms of size and internal position of the damage. Similarly, using these samples, a study has been conducted on the effect on the thermal image produced by an increase of humidity inside the defect phenomena normally associated with wood decay.En el presente artículo se muestran los resultados obtenidos en una fase de laboratorio al tratar de determinar el alcance de la termografía de infrarrojos en la detección de defectos internos en la madera y, por otro lado, cómo interviene la densidad de este material sobre la temperatura superficial mostrada en un termograma. Para ello se ha desarrollado un trabajo experimental donde se han controlado una serie de parámetros ambientales y de trabajo (temperatura ambiente, humedad relativa, distancia al objetivo…), y se ha sistematizado el proceso utilizando piezas de distintas especies de madera (distintas densidades) y diseñando una serie de probetas donde se han analizado varias casuísticas posibles en cuanto a tamaño y posición interna de los daños. Análogamente, sobre estas probetas se ha estudiado el efecto que produce sobre la imagen termográfica un incremento de humedad interna en el defecto asociada normalmente a los fenómenos de pudrición de la madera

    Resumen: Introducción. Se trata de un estudio descriptivo-observacional donde se ha analizado toda publicidad de juguetes y juegos emitida por una cadena de la televisión privada española en horario infantil durante la Navidad de 2010. Objetivos. Se pretendió averiguar en qué medida hay juguetes que favorezcan la actividad física y las relaciones sociales. Material y métodos. Se ha realizado una visualización y un análisis de los anuncios recogidos durante los horarios y el período citados. Resultados. Se desvela como abundan los juguetes de tipo colectivo y de mesa (20,3% del total de juguetes) que fomentan las relaciones sociales, pero a la vez los individualistas como los videojuegos (21,2%). Así mismo son escasos los juguetes deportivos que potencian el ejercicio físico (3,3%). Conclusión. Existe una tendencia al equilibrio entre la publicidad de juguetes individualistas y los colectivos, mientras que los deportivos suponen un mínimo porcentaje. Discusión. La publicidad tiene un inimaginable poder de persuasión en los niños, que copian y adoptan los valores y actitudes que ésta emite, moldeando su personalidad. Así, se debería concienciar a los publicistas para que fomentasen actitudes cívicas y sanas. Palabras clave: ejercicio físico, anuncios, niño, relaciones sociales, televisión Abstract: Introduction. This essay is a descriptive study based on observation in which all the advertising of toys and games broadcast by one specific private TV channel has been analyzed. These advertisements were shown during children's programming hours in Christmas 2010. Objectives. The main aim is to find out to what extent there are toys which foster physical activity and social relationships. Material and methods. The study has been carried out by means of a revision as well as an analysis of advertisements shown in the period and times related above. Results. The study reveals that collective and board games, which foster social relationships, are abundant (20.3% of the total), but at the same time there is a great number of individualistic games like, for example, computer games (21.2 %). In addition to this, sports games are rarely advertised (3.3%). Conclusion. There is a balance between the advertising of individualistic games and collective ones, while the percentage of sports games is very low. Discussion. Advertising has a very powerful effect on children, who copy and adopt the values and attitudes it shows, thus shaping their personality. Therefore, we should make advertisers more sensitive towards the stimulation of civic healthy attitudes in children.Keywords: physical exercise, advertising, children, social relations, televisio

    Caracterización de morteros con cerámica reciclada y su uso en piezas prefabicadas para entrevigado de forjados

    This study analyses a procedure to manufacture mortars with different percentages of ceramic waste as partial replacement for aggregates. The study also examines the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the new mortars, analysing substitution ratios that range from 10% to 50%. Prior to this, all the materials used in the production of the mortar were characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fluorescence (XRF). The objective was to determine the similarity between different types of ceramic waste, as well as the differences in the minerology and chemical composition with the aggregate. The results of the study show that it is possible to obtain mortars with lower densities compared to the same product with no recycled content. The product’s characteristics make it ideal for the manufacture of prefabricated components for structural floors for rehabilitation works. Finally, the pieces are used in a real rehabilitation case study, highlightining the structural advantages.Este trabajo analiza morteros con diferentes porcentajes de cerámica reciclada como sustituto parcial de la arena. Además el estudio examina las propiedades físicas, químicas y mecánicas de los nuevos morteros, empleando diferentes porcentajes de sustitución (10% - 50%). Con anterioridad, se caracterizaron todos los materiales empleados en este trabajo mediante difracción y fluorescencia de rayos-X. El objetivo fue determinar las diferencias y similitudes en la composición química y mineralógica de los distintos tipos de residuos cerámicos y del resto de áridos utilizados. Los resultados muestran que es posible obtener morteros con menor densidad frente a las muestras sin contenido reciclado. Sus características los hacen idóneos para la creación de piezas prefabricadas de entrevigado para rehabilitación de forjados. Finalmente.     Characterization and controlled combustion of carbonaceous deactivating species deposited on an activated carbon-based catalyst

    The composition of the carbonaceous deactivating species (coke) deposited on a Pt and Pd supported P-containing activated carbon catalyst has been studied. These deactivating species were deposited on the catalyst during the hydrocracking of scrap tire pyrolysis oil at 400-500 degrees C, and it has been selectively characterized by means of temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO), temperature-programmed desorption/gas chromatography (TPD/GC) and laser desorption-ionization/mass spectroscopy (LDI/MS). In addition, the evolution of the textural properties and the acidity of the deactivated catalysts have been evaluated. The high thermal and oxidation resistance of the catalytic support has allowed to combust the coke in the TPO and calculate its intrinsic activation energy as a function of the extent of the combustion. Combined TPO and LDI/MS results have shown that an increase in the hydrocracking temperature attenuates the catalyst deactivation due to the hydrocracking of coke precursors. Coke aging, by evolving towards a more condensed structure, is also favored at higher hydrocracking temperatures. The combustion of the most condensed coke requires of higher temperatures than 375 degrees C, which hinders the complete regeneration of the activated carbon-based catalyst. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V.     Wonderfully weird: the head anatomy of the armadillo ant, Tatuidris tatusia (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Agroecomyrmecinae), with evolutionary implications

    Tatuidris tatusia Brown & Kempf, 1968, the armadillo ant, is a morphologically unique species found in low to high elevation forests in regions of Central and South America. It is one of only two extant representatives of the subfamily Agroecomyrmecinae, and very little is known about the biology of these ants, which are almost exclusively collected from leaf litter and have rarely been seen alive. Here, we illuminate the functional morphology and evolution of this species via detailed anatomical documentation of their exceptionally modified head. We describe and illustrate the skeletomuscular system, digestive tract, and cephalic glands based on high-resolution micro-computed tomography scan data. We hypothesize that the modifications which produce the unusual “shield-like” head shape are the result of complex optimizations for mandibular power, physical protection, and balance. The most conspicuous cephalic features are the broadening of the frontal region and foreshortening of the postgenal region. The former characteristic is likely also associated with the lateral position of the antennal scrobe, the inverted antennal articulation, and the broad attachment surface for the mandibular adductor muscles. This head geometry also comes with a degree of internal restructuring of the tentorium and the antennal musculature, which have a unique configuration among ants studied so far. The mandibular blades, and their articulations and muscles, are highly distinctive compared with previously evaluated species. Using a 3D-printed model, we were able to hypothesize their entire range of motion as the mandibles fit tightly into the oral foramen. Finally, we compare T. tatusia across other related subfamilies and discuss the evolution of the Agroecomyrmecinae and other species-poor and phylogenetically isolated “relictual” lineages.journal articl

    A New Ant Species of the Genus Tetramorium Mayr, 1855 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) from Saudi Arabia, with a Revised Key to the Arabian Species

    Tetramorium amalae sp. n. is described and illustrated from Saudi Arabia based on two worker caste specimens collected in Al Bahah region. The new species belongs to the T. shilohense group and appears to be closely related to T. dysderke Bolton from Nigeria. T. amalae is distinguished by having well-developed frontal carinae, smaller eyes, greater head length and width, greater pronotal width, and the petiole node is longer than broad. Tetramorium latinode Collingwood & Agosti is recorded for the first time from Saudi Arabia and for only the second time since the original description. The worker caste of T. latinode is redescribed and illustrated using scanning electron micrographs to facilitate recognition and the gyne is described for the first time with observations given on species relationships, biology and habitat. A revised key to the nineteen Tetramorium species recorded from Arabian Peninsula based on worker castes is provided. Tetramorium bicarinatum (Nylander) is recorded for the first time from Saudi Arabia. It is suggested that T. amalae and T. latinode are endemic to the Arabian Peninsula

    Parallel and divergent morphological adaptations underlying the evolution of jumping ability in ants

    Jumping is a rapid locomotory mode widespread in terrestrial organisms. However, it is a rare specialization in ants. Forward jumping has been reported within four distantly related ant genera: Gigantiops, Harpegnathos, Myrmecia, and Odontomachus. The temporal engagement of legs/body parts during jump, however, varies across these genera. It is unknown what morphological adaptations underlie such behaviors and whether jumping in ants is solely driven directly by muscle contraction or additionally relies on elastic recoil mechanism. We investigated the morphological adaptations for jumping behavior by comparing differences in the locomotory musculature between jumping and non-jumping relatives using X-ray micro-CT and 3D morphometrics. We found that the size-specific volumes of the trochanter depressor muscle (scm6) of the middle and hind legs are 3-5 times larger in jumping ants, and that one coxal remotor muscle (scm2) is reduced in volume in the middle and/or hind legs. Notably, the enlargement in the volume of other muscle groups is directly linked to the legs or body parts engaged during the jump. Furthermore, a direct comparison of the muscle architecture revealed two significant differences between jumping vs. non-jumping ants: First, the relative Physiological Cross-Sectional Area (PCSA) of the trochanter depressor muscles of all three legs were larger in jumping ants, except in the front legs of Odontomachus rixosus and Myrmecia nigrocincta; second, the relative muscle fiber length was shorter in jumping ants compared to non-jumping counterparts, except in the front legs of O. rixosus and M. nigrocincta. These results suggest that the difference in relative muscle volume in jumping ants is largely invested in the area (PCSA), and not in fiber length. There was no clear difference in the pennation angle between jumping and non-jumping ants. Additionally, we report that the hind leg length relative to body length was longer in jumping ants. Based on direct comparison of the observed vs. possible work and power output during jumps, we surmise that direct muscle contractions suffice to explain jumping performance in three species, except for O. rixosus, where the lack of data on jumping performance prevents us from drawing definitive conclusions for this particular species. We suggest that increased investment in jumping-relevant musculature is a primary morphological adaptation that separates jumping from non-jumping ants.
