    Effects of Imipramine and Lithium on the Suppression of Cell Proliferation in the Dentate Gyrus of the Hippocampus in Adrenocorticotropic Hormone-treated Rats

    We examined the influence of chronic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) treatment on the number of Ki-67-positive cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus in rats. ACTH treatment for 14 days decreased the number of such cells. The administration of imipramine or lithium alone for 14 days had no effect in saline-treated rats. The effect of ACTH was blocked by the administration of imipramine. Furthermore, the coadministration of imipramine and lithium for 14 days significantly increased the number of Ki-67-positive cells in both the saline and ACTH-treated rats. The coadministration of imipramine and lithium normalized the cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus in rats treated with ACTH

    The effects of unilateral cochlear ablation on the expression of vesicular glutamate transporter 1 in the lower auditory pathway of neonatal rats

    Objectives: Unilateral cochlear damage has profound effects on the central auditory pathways in the brain. Methods: We examined the effects of unilateral cochlear ablation on VGLUT1 expression in the cochlear nucleus (CN) and the superior olivary complex (SOC) in neonatal rats. Results: VGLUT1 expression in the CN subdivisions (the AVCN, the PVCN and the DCN-deep layers) and the SOC (the MnTB, the LSO and the MSO) ipsilateral to the ablated side was significantly suppressed by unilateral cochlear ablation. Interestingly, VGLUT1 expression in the PVCN and the DCN-deep layers contralateral to the ablated side was also reduced. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that unilateral cochlear ablation affects VGLUT1 expression in the central auditory pathways not only ipsilateral but also contralateral to the ablated side. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.in Press / Embargo Period 12 month

    Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase interacts with phosphorylated Akt resulting from increased blood glucose in rat cardiac muscle

    AbstractHere we describe the interaction of phosphorylated ∼40kDa protein with phosphorylated Akt which is a serine/threonine kinase resulting from increased blood glucose in rat cardiac muscle. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed that this protein was glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). Furthermore, increase in Akt and GAPDH phosporylation and induction of their association were both observed after insulin stimulation in the H9c2 cell line derived from embryonic rat ventricle. Moreover, the activation of GAPDH was upregulated when the GAPDH phosphorylation was increased.     A 59-year-old man visited our hospital in June 1997 because of cough and dyspnea at rest. He was diagnosed as pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and transbronchial lung biopsy. The alveoli were distended with pink homogeneous material that showed staining with the periodic acid Schiff method. The concentration of surfactant protein A in BAL fluid was significantly increased. We treated the patient with oral ambroxol hydrochloride and therapeutic BAL. We believe that this combination of therapies is the first choice for the treatment of PAP

    Idiopathic Interstitial Pneumonia with Increased Serum Levels of Cancer-Associated Antigens, CA19-9 and SLX

    We report a case of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP) with elevated serum levels of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) and sialyl Lewisx-i (SLX). A 67-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to our hospital with a fever, dry cough and dyspnea on exertion. She had previously been admitted and had then been diagnosed as IIP. The serum level of SLX, measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA), was markedly elevated (120 U/mL; cut-off, < 38 U/mL). The serum level of CA19-9, measured by RIA, was at a slightly high level (46 U/mL; cut-off, < 40 U/mL). The values of CA19-9 and SLX were changed during her clinical course. These cancer-associated antigens were immunohistochemically expressed on the hyperplastic bronchiolar epithelium, on the surface epithelium cells of microscopic honeycombing and on exudates in air space. Repeated damage to the lungs may have forced these antigens of the markers into the blood circulation, which may have resulted in the elevated serum levels of CA19-9 and SLX observed in this patient
