    Simple-Box-9 coil system: A novel approachto design of a square coil system for producing uniform magnetic fields

    This paper presents a novel approach for the design of square coil system, through considerations of a conventional square coil system. This simple approach allows us to design a coil system which contains a greater number of coils. From this design method, we introduce a new structure system of same-sized square coils, Simple-Box-9. The constant coil spacing is a fourth-part of the side length of the coil, and the number of windings is 2/1/1/1/1/1/1/1/2.     Production of a Transgenic Mosquito Expressing Circumsporozoite Protein, a Malarial Protein, in the Salivary Gland of Anopheles stephensi (Diptera:Culicidae)

    We are producing a transgenic mosquito, a flying syringe, to deliver a vaccine protein to human beings via the saliva the mosquito deposits in the skin while biting. The mosquito produces a vaccine protein in the salivary gland (SG) and deposits the protein into the host's skin when it takes the host's blood. We chose circumsporozoite protein (CSP), currently the most promising malaria vaccine candidate, to be expressed in the SG of Anopheles stephensi. To transform the mosquitoes, plasmid containing the CSP gene under the promoter of female SG-specific gene, as well as the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene under the promoter of 3xP3 as a selection marker in the eyes, was injected into more than 400 eggs. As a result, five strains of GFP-expressing mosquitoes were established, and successful CSP expression in the SG was confirmed in one strain. The estimated amount of CSP in the SG of the strain was 40ng per mosquito. We allowed the CSP-expressing mosquitoes to feed on mice to induce the production of anti-CSP antibody. However, the mice did not develop anti-CSP antibody even after transgenic mosquitoes had bitten them several times. We consider that CSP in the SG was not secreted properly into the saliva. Further techniques and trials are required in order to realize vaccine-delivering mosquitoes

    3D Numerical Simulation of Hair Formation Process Using a Particle Model

    Hair is very important in determining human appearance. Although there are numerous observed data and experimental recordings for hair, a detailed mechanism of hair formation has not yet been elucidated. Therefore, in this study, a simulation of the method of formative process of hair roots was done using a 3D particle model. The model contains details of the cell growth from the hair matrix cells and changes from spherical to non-spherical oval shape. Simulation results were able to exhibit the hair formation process from the base of the hair follicle. Furthermore, at the surface opening of the follicle, the hair structure was recorded. Therefore, this model can be used to clarify the mechanism of hair root formation

    Deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is the most common enzyme disorder in the world with a very high incidence in the tropics and sub-tropics as a result of malaria selection. North Sulawesi is a part of Indonesian archipelago where malaria has been endemic. This study was aimed to examine the prevalence of G6PD deficiency in the region. An observational cross sectional study was conducted on primary school students belong to different ethnic groups. The purposive sampling method was used to select 442 study subjects, age 5-9 years. The G6PDdeficiency screening test was carried out using G6PD-assay kit. The prevalences of G6PDdeficiency male students were 0% in the Minahasans, 7,4%-12,0% in the Sangihenese, and 4,0%10,3% in the Bolaang Mongondownese. The results suggest that the highest prevalence of G6PD deficiency was in the Sangihe ethnic group. Further molecular analysis would be beneficial to study the genetic relationship of those populations with other neighboring population

    Successful Treatment of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia Complicated with Endometrial Cancer by Arsenic Trioxide

    Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a hematological emergency that requires urgent intervention because of the high incidence of early hemorrhagic death. When patients with APL experience a synchronous solid organ tumor, the tumor’s treatment must also be done properly. Differentiation-inducing therapy using arsenic trioxide (ATO) has less hematological toxicity compared to cytotoxic chemotherapy and might be preferable for untreated APL patients with a synchronous solid organ tumor. Here we describe the first successful case of untreated APL and synchronous endometrial cancer (in an adult Japanese woman) treated with ATO consolidation therapy and the subsequent surgery and chemotherapy for endometrial cancer

    Antinociceptive Effects of Intrathecal Landiolol Injection in a Rat Formalin Pain Model

    Perioperative beta-blocker administration has recently been recommended for patients undergoing cardiac or other surgery due to the beneficial cardiovascular effects of these agents. In addition, some studies have reported that perioperatively administered beta-blockers also have analgesic effects. In this study, to investigate the antinociceptive effects and the analgesic profile of landiolol, we examined the effects of intrathecal landiolol administration on nociceptive pain behavior and c-fos mRNA expression (a neural marker of pain) in the spinal cord using a rat formalin model. We found that pain-related behavior was inhibited by intrathecal landiolol administration. Moreover, the increase in c-fos mRNA expression on the formalin-injected side was less pronounced in rats administered landiolol than in saline administered controls. Thus, intrathecal administration of landiolol exhibited antinociceptive effects. Further investigation of the antinociceptive mechanism of landiolol is required
