Syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) associated with lateral medullary syndrome: Case report and literature review

    Get PDF
Background: Only one case of syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone with lateral medullary syndrome has been reported so far. We report a case of lateral medullary syndrome showing syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone and analyze the pathomechanism underlying its clinical features. Case presentation: A 67-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for dizziness, dysarthria, and dysphagia. He was diagnosed with lateral medullary syndrome based on the neurological examination and brain magnetic resonance imaging. Horner syndrome was absent. Asymptomatic hyponatremia appeared 9 days after admission and the patient was diagnosed with syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone. Fluid restriction and intravenous furosemide injection improved the hyponatremia. Conclusion: Lateral medullary syndrome could be associated with syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone. © 2016 The Author(s)

Flav-3-enes were prepared in excellent yields (up to 98%) by reductive elimination of flav-3-ene-4-triflates in the presence of palladium acetate, formic acid and tri-n-buthylamine

EVALUATION OF TORQUE MOMENT IN ESTHETIC BRACKETS

    Get PDF
Objectives: To examine the torque moment that occurs between esthetic brackets and bendable alloy (stainless steel [SS], titanium-molybdenum [Ti-Mo], and titanium-niobium [Ti-Nb]) wires. Materials and Methods: This study examined ceramic (CR), zirconium oxide (ZC), polycarbonate (PC), and conventional metallic brackets (MT) (upper, 0.018-inch and 0.022-inch slots) combined with SS, Ti-Mo, and Ti-Nb wires using elastic module ligation. The torque moments delivered by various wire and bracket combinations were measured using a torque gauge apparatus. The wire torque angles at 5–40° were examined. Results: The torque value increased in the order of CR, ZC, MT, and PC brackets for both 0.018-inch and 0.022-inch slots. The fracture points of the CR and ZC brackets combined with SS and Ti-Mo wires were approximately more than 30° and 35°, respectively. No fracture points were detected in the combination of ZC brackets and Ti-Nb wires. Conclusions: The current study identified the material characteristics of CR, ZR, and PC brackets during torque tooth movements. The present results demonstrate a characteristic combined effect between different esthetic brackets and bendable alloy wires

Amino Amide Organocatalysts for Asymmetric Michael Addition of β-Keto Esters with β-Nitroolefins

    Get PDF
Asymmetric Michael addition of β-keto esters with trans-β-nitroolefins using chiral amino amide organocatalyst was tried and afforded synthetically useful chiral Michael adducts in both excellent chemical yields (up to 99%) and stereoselectivities (up to dr. 99:1, up to 98% ee)

Hybrid-Type Squaramide-Fused Amino Alcohol Organocatalysts for Enantioselective Nitro-Aldol Reaction of Nitromethane with Isatins

    Get PDF
A series of new hybrid type squaramide-fused amino alcohol (SFAA) catalysts were synthesized and their catalytic efficiency in enantioselective nitro-aldol reaction of various isatins with nitromethane that afford the chiral 3-substituted 3-hydroxyoxindoles in excellent chemical yields (up to 99%) and high enantioselectivities (up to 95% ee) is described. The resulting chiral 3-hydroxyoxindoles could be used as synthetic precursors for the synthesis of several natural products with a broad spectrum of fascinating biological activities

Microbial Community Composition of Two Environmentally Conserved Estuaries in the Midorikawa River and Shirakawa River

To provide a general overview of the microbial communities in environmentally conserved estuaries, the top 5 cm of sediment was sampled from the sandy estuary of the Shirakawa River and from the muddy estuary of the Midorikawa River. Higher amounts of organic matter were detected in the Midorikawa estuary sample than in the Shirakawa estuary sample. Measurement of redox potential revealed that the Shirakawa estuary was aerobic and the Midorikawa estuary was much less aerobic. Clone analysis was performed by targeting partial 16S rRNA gene sequences and using extracted DNA from the samples as a template. Various bacteria were detected, among which Gammaproteobacteria was dominant at both estuaries. Unclassified clones were detected in the Gammaproteobacteria group, mainly among samples from the Midorikawa estuary. Other detected bacterial groups were Alphaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. All the Deltaproteobacteria clones were anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacteria. Those aerobic and anaerobic bacteria coexisted in the top 5 cm of the estuary sediments indicating the surface layer have active sulfur and carbon cycle. Abundance of aerobic Gammaproteobacteria may be an indicator for conserved estuaries
