    Formation of maritime convergence zones within cold air outbreaks due to the shape of the coastline or sea ice edge

    Maritime cold air outbreaks often feature convergence zones that provide a conducive environment for the development of polar mesoscale cyclones and polar lows. This study examines the formation mechanisms of these convergence zones in cold air outbreaks downstream of a coastline or sea-ice edge. A simplified configuration in which the coastline or sea-ice edge is approximated by a line featuring a bend with an angle is examined using analytic solutions and idealised numerical simulations. The bend of the coastline causes differences in the fetch over which air parcels travel, causing a warm wedge of air downstream of the bend due to differential airmass transformations. The warm wedge is associated with a pressure trough that leads to convergence in the presence of surface friction. The analytic model captures this mechanism and compares well with the idealised numerical simulations. Condensational heating associated with moist convection enhances vertical motions and thus intensifies the horizontal convergence. The idealised numerical simulations also reproduce an asymmetry in the vertical shear of the horizontal wind across the convergence zone, which explains the transverse cloud streets downstream to the left of the convergence zone.publishedVersio

    Structure of a Bathtub Vortex : Importance of the Bottom Boundary Layer

    A bathtub vortex in a cylindrical tank rotating at a constant angular velocity [omega] is studied by meansof a laboratory experiment, a numerical experiment and a boundary layer theory. The laboratory and numerical experiments show that two regimes of vortices in the steady-state can occur depending on [omega] and the volume flux Q through the drain hole: when Q is large and [omega] is small, a potential vortex is formed in which angular momentum outside the vortex core is constant in the non-rotating frame. However, when Q is small or [omega] is large, a vortex is generated in which the angular momentum decreases with decreasing radius. Boundary layertheory shows that the vortex regimes strongly depend on the theoretical radial volume flux through the bottomboundary layer under a potential vortex : when the ratio of Q to the theoretical boundary-layer radial volume flux Qb (scaled by 2π R2([omega] ν)12 ) at the outer rim of the vortex core is larger than a critical value (of order 1), the radial flow in the interior exists at all radiiand Regime I is realized, where R is the inner radius of the tank and ν the kinematicviscosity.When the ratio is less than the critical value, the radial flow in the interior nearlyvanishes inside a critical radius and almost all of the radial volume flux occurs only in the boundary layer,resulting in Regime II in which the angular momentum is not constant with radius. This criterion is found to explain the results of the laboratory and numerical experiments very well

    Comparison of Mortality between Japanese Peritoneal Dialysis and Hemodialysis Patients: A 5-Year Multicenter Follow-Up Study

    To examine the relationship between dialysis modality and prognosis in Japanese patients, we conducted a prospective multicenter observational study. We recruited 83 background-matched peritoneal dialysis (PD) and 83 hemodialysis (HD) patients (average age, 64.9 years; men, 53.6%; diabetic patients, 22.9%; median duration of dialysis, 48 months in all patients) and followed them for 5 years. During the follow-up period, 27 PD patients (16 cardiovascular and 11 non-cardiovascular deaths) and 27 HD patients died (14 cardiovascular and 13 non-cardiovascular deaths). There were 8 PD patients switched to HD, and 6 PD patients received renal transplantation. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that the crude survival rate was not significantly different at the end of 5 years (PD 67.5% versus 67.5%, log-rank P = 0.719). The difference in cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortalities between PD and HD was not statistically significant. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that the independent predictors for death were age and serum albumin levels, but not the dialysis modality. This study showed that the overall mortality was not significantly different between PD and HD patients, which suggests that dialysis modality might not be an independent factor for survival in Japanese patients
