The relationship between parents with a history of childhood problems and incidence of consequent child abuse

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to determine the factors related to the need for cooperation with child guidance centers with a focus on the presence or absence of a history of childhood problems in at-risk parents receiving support from their municipality. Among the 1890 parents who received child care support from public health nurses in the municipalities, 164 parents (8.7%) had a history of childhood problems. Among these, 50 parents (30.5%) received support from child guidance centers. The parents with a history of childhood problems had a higher incidence rate for receiving support from child guidance centers than other parents. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that “marital strife or domestic violence”, and “financial problems” were associated with consultations with child guidance centers among parents with a history of childhood problems. The results showed that family situations of parents who had a history of childhood problems may, in time, become more severe, even if they have received support from public health nurses in the municipalities. Therefore, parents with a history of childhood problems need support as early as possible. In addition, those parents with “marital strife or domestic violence” and “financial problems” also need guidance and early nursing care interventions

Objective : To improve primary prevention of child maltreatment, the association between at-risk parents identified by maternity hospitals and local health centers and intervention outcomes was investigated. Methods : A screening program for primary prevention of child maltreatment has been implemented for parents with children aged<3 years in A Prefecture. At-risk parents are identified at maternity hospitals and local health centers. Public health nurses provide intervention to promote positive parenting through home visits, and referred to child protective centers when they suspect child maltreatment. Results : Between 2009 and 2014, a total of 2,252 new at-risk parents were identified, 956 from maternity hospitals and 1,296 from local health centers. Among these at-risk parents, 356 (15.8%) were referred to child protective centers for possible child maltreatment, 88 of which came from maternity hospitals and 268 from local health centers. The rate of referral from maternity hospitals was significantly lower than that from local health centers (9.2% vs. 20.7%, p<0.001). Conclusions : Identification of at-risk parents during pregnancy and early intervention resulted in a decrease in the rate of referrals to child protective centers. The specific risk factors of “perceived lack of social support”, “mental illness” and “teen pregnancy” may be mitigated by early intervention

Honeydew-associated microbes elicit defense responses against brown planthopper in rice

Feeding of sucking insects, such as the rice brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens; BPH), causes only limited mechanical damage on plants that is otherwise essential for injury-triggered defense responses against herbivores. In pursuit of complementary BPH elicitors perceived by plants, we examined the potential effects of BPH honeydew secretions on the BPH monocot host, rice (Oryza sativa). We found that BPH honeydew strongly elicits direct and putative indirect defenses in rice, namely accumulation of phytoalexins in the leaves, and release of volatile organic compounds from the leaves that serve to attract natural enemies of herbivores, respectively. We then examined the elicitor active components in the honeydew and found that bacteria in the secretions are responsible for the activation of plant defense. Corroborating the importance of honeydew-associated microbiota for induced plant resistance, BPHs partially devoid of their microbiota via prolonged antibiotics ingestion induced significantly less defense in rice relative to antibiotic-free insects applied to similar groups of plants. Our data suggest that rice plants may additionally perceive herbivores via their honeydew-associated microbes, allowing them to discriminate between incompatible herbivores—that do not produce honeydew—and those that are compatible and therefore dangerous

Thrombin stimulates platelet-derived growth factor release by alveolar macrophages in rats : significance in bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis

Thrombin is a multifunctional enzyme generated at sites of vascular injury, and is known to be increased in the lungs in some types of fibrotic lung disease. In this study, to determine whether thrombin is associated with fibroblast growth and pulmonary fibrosis in these disorders, we examined whether a growth factor for fibroblasts (platelet-derived growth factor, PDGF) was released by thrombin-stimulated alveolar macrophages (AM). The culture supernatants of rat AM stimulated with 1 or 10 U/ml of thrombin showed a significant increase in fibroblast growth-stimulating activity (FGA). Pretreatment of the AM supernatant with anti-PDGF-AA antibody significantly decreased the FGA, but pretreatment with anti-PDGF-BB antibody did not. The supernatants of AM stimulated with thrombin also increased the growth of fibroblasts from the lungs of rats with bleomycin-induced lung injury. These results indicate that thrombin stimulates AM to release PDGF-AA, which is responsible, at least in part, for fibroblast growth and the development of pulmonary fibrosis in some types of fibrotic lung disease

Effects of Rakkyofructan on Postprandial Glucose Level in Plasma

The effect of Rakkyofructan on the glucose level in plasma after intake of high carbohydrate diet was investigated. The six healthy female volunteers consumed 50 g of carbohydrate meal (the glucose, the cooked white rice, the bread, or the cooked sweet potato) with or without Rakkyofructan. Blood specimen was collected of before and 30, 45, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min after intake, and the glucose level in plasma was measured. The peak value (Cmax) and the area under curve (AUC) of blood glucose level were significantly decreased in the group ingested glucose with Rakkyofructan compared to the group which ingested glucose only. The blood glucose level was suppressed from 60% to 32% (glucose; 43.1±15.5%, cooked white rice; 40.5±13.5%, cooked sweet potato; 53.4±16.5%, bread; 68.5±20.5%) (p<0.01) by Rakkyofructan with 50 g of carbohydrate meal. These results indicated that Rakkyofructan could inhibit the increase of blood glucose level after high carbohydrate diet intake

Neuroimaging in autism spectrum disorders : 1H-MRS and NIRS study

Using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS), we measured chemical metabolites in the left amygdala and the bilateral orbito-frontal cortex (OFC) in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The concentrations of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) in these regions of ASD were significantly decreased compared to those in the control group. In the autistic patients, the NAA concentrations in these regions correlated with their social quotient. These findings suggest the presence of neuronal dysfunction in the amygdala and OFC in ASD. Dysfunction in the amygdala and OFCmay contribute to the pathogenesis of ASD.We performed a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) study to evaluate the mirror neuron system in children with ASD. The concentrations of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) were measured with frontal probes using a 34-channel NIRS machine while the subjects imitated emotional facial expressions. The increments in the concentration of oxy-Hb in the pars opercularis of the inferior frontal gyrus in autistic subjects were significantly lower than those in the controls. However, the concentrations of oxy-Hb in this area were significantly elevated in autistic subjects after they were trained to imitate emotional facial expressions. The results suggest that mirror neurons could be activated by repeated imitation in children with ASD

We report the effect of culture broths from various microorganisms on fruiting of Pleurotus ostreatus W0001. P. ostreatus W0001 has been grown on sterile sawdust medium containing culture broths from various microorganisms with good yields in small scale experiments. The spawning to first yield obtained for a period of 10 days was 9.7% of the moistened medium on the sawdusts medium containing culture broth from Saccharomyces cerevisiae AKU 4100
