    Influence on Stress Reactions of Social Skill and Cognitive Appraisal in Junior High Students

    本研究の目的は、中学生を対象に、社会的スキルとストレッサーに対する認知的評価、ストレス反応の関係性を明らかにし、社会的スキルが、認知的評価のストレス反応への影響を調整する効果(調整効果)について検討することであった。その結果、ストレス反応に対する社会的スキルと認知的評価の影響には男女差が認められ、男子ではストレス反応と「関係参加行動」・「関係維持行動」という基礎的なスキルの間に負の関連が認められた。一方女子では、それら2つの基礎的なスキルに加え、認知的評価の「コントロール可能性」とストレス反応の間にも負の関連が、「関係向上行動」とストレス反応との問には正の関連が認められた。調整効果については、女子において部分的に確認された。The purpose of this study was to determine the relations between social skills and cognitive appraisal and stress responses in junior high school students. Moreover, we examined whether social skills coordinate influence on stress responses of cognitive appraisal(coordination effects). As results, gender differences were observed in influences on stress responses of cognitive appraisal and social skills. In males, stress responses were negatively associated with fundamental social skills such as "Behavior for participating in relations" and "Behavior for maintaining relations". In female sample, stress responses had negative associations with "controllability" of cognitive appraisal in addition to these fundamental social skills. Furthermore, stress responses were positively association with "Behavior for developing relations" in female. The coordination effects were confirmed in female partially. These findings were discussed

    Best Complete Approximations of Preference Relations

    We investigate the problem of approximating an incomplete preference relation \succsim on a finite set by a complete preference relation. We aim to obtain this approximation in such a way that the choices on the basis of two preferences, one incomplete, the other complete, have the smallest possible discrepancy in the aggregate. To this end, we use the top-difference metric on preferences, and define a best complete approximation of \succsim as a complete preference relation nearest to \succsim relative to this metric. We prove that such an approximation must be a maximal completion of \succsim, and that it is, in fact, any one completion of \succsim with the largest index. Finally, we use these results to provide a sufficient condition for the best complete approximation of a preference to be its canonical completion. This leads to closed-form solutions to the best approximation problem in the case of several incomplete preference relations of interest

    The transitive core: inference of welfare from nontransitive preference relations

    Abstract This paper studies welfare criteria under an environment in which a decision maker is endowed with a nontransitive preference relation. In such an environment, the classical utilitarian welfare criterion may not identify the welfare order, and the problem of maximizing the decision maker's welfare becomes ambiguous. In order to find a criterion that applies to nontransitive preference relations, I propose a set of desirable properties of welfare criteria and uniquely identify a consistent rule that infers welfare orders from nontransitive preference relations. This rule, called the transitive core, is applied to a variety of nontransitive preference models, such as semiorders on a commodity space, relative discounting time preferences, regret preferences on risky prospects, and collective preference relations induced by the majority criterion. These examinations show that the proposed method provides successful inference of welfare in respective contexts. JEL Classification: D11, D60

    Bayesian inference Tool (B. I. T.) is a software program developed to support medical professionals and students in the application of Bayesian inference to medical decision-making and education. This software program makes it possible to visualize the posterior probability distributions of Bayesian inference. In addition, its interface aims to facilitate the intuitive understanding of the operative procedures. For many cases of Bayesian inference with normal distributions, the graphical representation of the posterior probability distribution changes dynamically when the input value is assigned by the user with the use of a computer mouse; this procedure also enables the dynamic calculation of the posterior probability. When operating this software, it is desirable for the user to have basic knowledge and understanding of the presuppositions as well as applications of Bayesian inference

    Salubrinal acts as a Dusp2 inhibitor and suppresses inflammation in anti-collagen antibody-induced arthritis

    Dual-specificity phosphatase 2 (Dusp2; also called phosphatase of activated cells 1, PAC1) is highly expressed in activated immune cells. We examined whether a potential inhibitor of Dusp2, salubrinal, prevents inflammatory cytokine expression in immune cells and arthritic responses in a mouse model of anti-collagen antibody-induced arthritis (CAIA). Salubrinal is a synthetic chemical that inhibits de-phosphorylation of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 alpha (eIF2α). In this study, we examined the effects of salubrinal on expression of inflammation linked genes as well as a family of DUSP genes using genome-wide microarrays, qPCR, and RNA interference. We also evaluated the effects of salubrinal on arthritic responses in CAIA mice using clinical and histological scores. The results revealed that salubrinal decreased inflammatory gene expression in macrophages, T lymphocytes, and mast cells. Dusp2 was suppressed by salubrinal in LPS-activated macrophages as well as PMA/ionomycin-activated T lymphocytes and mast cells. Furthermore, a partial silencing of Dusp2 downregulated IL1β and Cox2, and the inflammatory signs of CAIA mice were significantly suppressed by salubrinal. Collectively, this study presents a novel therapeutic possibility of salubrinal for inflammatory arthritis such as RA through inhibition of Dusp2

    Predicting and validating the pathway of Wnt3a-driven suppression of osteoclastogenesis

    Wnt signaling plays a major role in bone homeostasis and mechanotransduction, but its role and regulatory mechanism in osteoclast development are not fully understood. Through genome-wide in silico analysis, we examined Wnt3a-driven regulation of osteoclast development. Mouse bone marrow-derived cells were incubated with RANKL in the presence and absence of Wnt3a. Using microarray mRNA expression data, we conducted principal component analysis and predicted transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) that were potentially involved in the responses to RANKL and Wnt3a. The principal component analysis predicted potential Wnt3a responsive regulators that would reverse osteoclast development, and a TFBS prediction algorithm indicated that the AP1 binding site would be linked to Wnt3a-driven suppression. Since c-Fos was upregulated by RANKL and downregulated by Wnt3a in a dose-dependent manner, we examined its role using RNA interference. The partial silencing of c-Fos suppressed RANKL-driven osteoclastogenesis by downregulating NFATc1, a master transcription factor of osteoclast development. Although the involvement of c-Myc was predicted and partially silencing c-Myc slightly reduced the level of TRAP, c-Myc silencing did not alter the expression of NFATc1. Collectively, the presented systems-biology approach demonstrates that Wnt3a attenuates RANKL-driven osteoclastogenesis by blocking c-Fos expression and suggests that mechanotransduction of bone alters the development of not only osteoblasts but also osteoclasts through Wnt signaling

    Validity issues in the assessment of alexithymia related to the developmental stages of emotional cognition and language

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>We examined developmental aspects of the emotional awareness of adolescents by evaluating their responses to a self-reported questionnaire based on the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The items of the TAS-20 were modified to make them more understandable by adolescents, and nine new items related to a limited capacity for imagination were added. The Japanese Linguistic Ability Test and the multi-dimensional empathy scale for adolescents were administered to examine concurrent validity. Two hundred and two normative young adolescents and thirty-two adolescent patients with psychosomatic and/or behavioral problems participated in the study. Eighty junior high school students also participated in a separate examination of test-retest reliability.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Thirteen items were extracted after exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and four core factors were identified in the resulting scale: Difficulty Identifying Feelings (DIF), Difficulty Describing Feelings (DDF), Externally-Oriented Thinking (EOT) and Constricted Imaginal Capacities (CIC). Interestingly, scores on the multi-dimensional empathy scale correlated positively with DIF and DDF, but negatively with EOT and CIC. Higher DDF scores were associated with higher Japanese linguistic abilities. DIF/DDF scores were higher for females than males, irrespective of linguistic ability. Test-retest reliability coefficients were significant. The patient group showed significantly higher DIF scores than the normative students.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The present findings indicated that subjective difficulties in identifying and describing feelings are associated with empathetic and linguistic abilities. The developmental aspect to emotional awareness herein described suggests that self-reported questionnaires for alexithymia must be carefully constructed and examined, even for adults.</p

    Decreased sensory nerve excitation and bone pain associated with mouse Lewis lung cancer in TRPV1-deficient mice

    Bone pain is one of the most common and life-limiting complications of cancer metastasis to bone. Although the mechanism of bone pain still remains poorly understood, bone pain is evoked as a consequence of sensitization and excitation of sensory nerves (SNs) innervating bone by noxious stimuli produced in the microenvironment of bone metastases. We showed that bone is innervated by calcitonin gene-related protein (CGRP)+ SNs extending from dorsal root ganglia (DRG), the cell body of SNs, in mice. Mice intratibially injected with Lewis lung cancer (LLC) cells showed progressive bone pain evaluated by mechanical allodynia and flinching with increased CGRP+ SNs in bone and augmented SN excitation in DRG as indicated by elevated numbers of pERK- and pCREB-immunoreactive neurons. Immunohistochemical examination of LLC-injected bone revealed that the tumor microenvironment is acidic. Bafilomycin A1, a selective inhibitor of H+ secretion from vacuolar proton pump, significantly alleviated bone pain, indicating that the acidic microenvironment contributes to bone pain. We then determined whether the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), a major acid-sensing nociceptor predominantly expressed on SNs, plays a role in bone pain by intratibially injecting LLC cells in TRPV1-deficient mice. Bone pain and SN excitation in the DRG and spinal dorsal horn were significantly decreased in TRPV1 −/− mice compared with wild-type mice. Our results suggest that TRPV1 activation on SNs innervating bone by the acidic cancer microenvironment in bone contributes to SN activation and bone pain. Targeting acid-activated TRPV1 is a potential therapeutic approach to cancer-induced bone pain

    Pectin and high-amylose maize starch increase caecal hydrogen production and relieve hepatic ischaemia-reperfusion injury in rats.

    We investigated whether the feeding of high H2-generating dietary fibre and resistant starch (RS) could suppress hepatic ischaemia-reperfusion (IR) injury, which results from oxidative stress, in rats fed a pectin (Pec) or high-amylose maize starch (HAS) diet. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a control (C) diet, with or without Pec (0-5 % Pec) or HAS (0-30 % HAS) supplementation for 7 d. Portal H2 concentration showed a significant dose-dependent increase with the amount of Pec or HAS supplementation. Plasma alanine and aspartate aminotransferase activities remarkably increased in the C rats (5 % cellulose) due to IR treatment, while it decreased significantly or showed tendencies to decrease in 5 % Pec and 20 % HAS diet-fed rats. The hepatic oxidised glutathione (GSSG):total glutathione ratio increased significantly in IR rats maintained on the C diet compared with sham-operated rats. On the other hand, reduced glutathione (GSH):total glutathione and GSH:GSSG ratios decreased significantly. The GSSG:total glutathione ratio that increased due to IR treatment decreased significantly on HAS and Pec intake, while GSH:total glutathione and GSH:GSSG ratios increased significantly. Hepatic sinusoids of IR rats fed the C diet were occluded, but those of IR rats fed the Pec diet were similar to those in the sham-operated rats. In conclusion, we found that Pec or HAS, which enhance H2 generation in the large intestine, alleviated hepatic IR injury.
