Orthodontic Treatment of a Patient with Bilateral Congenitally Missing Maxillary Canines: The Effects of First Premolar Substitution on the Functional Outcome
Permanent canines are thought to play a pivotal role in obtaining an ideal occlusion. Dentists occasionally encounter patients who lack canines and are therefore missing a key to harmonious guidance during functional mandibular excursions. This case report describes the substitution of maxillary first premolars for congenitally missing canines in the context of an orthodontic treatment plan. A boy, age 10 years and 11 months, with a chief complaint of crooked teeth was diagnosed with Class II division 2 malocclusion associated with a high mandibular plane angle and deep overbite. A stable occlusion with a satisfactory facial profile and functional excursions without interference were achieved after a comprehensive two-stage orthodontic treatment process. The resulting occlusion and satisfactory facial profile were maintained for 12 months. These results indicate that substituting the first premolars for the canines is an effective option in treating patients with missing canines while maintaining functional goals
Efficient and General Synthesis of Novel ÎČ-Polyfluoroalkoxy Vinamidinium Salts
Novel ÎČ-polyfluoroalkoxy vinamidinium salts 3 and/or 4 were synthesized in good yields by the reaction of N-(2- polyfluoroalkoxy-3 ,3-difluoro-1-propenyI)trimethylammonium iodides (2), prepared from N-(2,3,3-trifluoro-1-propenyl)trimethylammonium iodide (1), with secondary amines in MeCN at 70 °C for 1 h. The salts were also obtainable in comparable yields by the one-pot reaction of 1 with sodium polyfluoroalkoxide followed by treatment with amines

Experimental Evaluation of Bretschneider's Solution for Myocardial Preservation in Cardiac Transplantation
Myocardial preservation by Bretschneider's solution (BR solution, Group I) with an intracellular like electrolyte and histidine buffer action was compared with EC-Bi solution (Group II) which has an extracellular like electrolyte and bicarbonate buffer action in the mongrel dogs. The PH and PCO2 of the effluent from the coronary sinus were maintained during myocardial ischemia for 3 hr but the lactate rose gradually in group I. The oxygen and lactate up-take ratio of the myocardium after re-perfusion was satisfactory and LV max dp/dt was also maintained at a high level in group I. Morphologically, myelin figure and mitochondrial deformation were more found in group II on electron microscopy.
A donor heart preserved for 3 hr in cold BR solution was transplanted in the left thoracic cavity in four mongrel dogs by the technique of the heterotopic cardiac transplantation. Resuscitation of cardiac pulsation was smooth and maintenance of the systemic circulation after transplantation was possible in every case. From these findings, it might be concluded that myocardial preservation using cold BR solution was useful for cardiac transplantation
