Cephalopods removed from stomachs of pelagic fish in tropical East Pacific were examined. From 131 stomachs of 14 pelagic fish species, more than 40 cephalopod species of 20 families were identified. 30% of prey cephalopods were occupied by the onychoteuthids consisting by at least 3 species followed by the Ommastrcphidae (14%), and tho Bolitaenidae (7.0%). Predominant prey species for Xiphias gladius was epipelagic octopus, Tremoctopus violaceus, which shared 17% in number. There were some differences between prey species composition between two species of tunas, Thunnus obesus and T. albacares. T. obesus fed on more deeply distributed. mesopelagic species than T. albacares. A coincidence in time and depth was detected between predatory fish and prey cephalopods. Small onychoteuthid species, Onykia rancureli was most abundant in number among prey cephalopods (21%). 1t shared 29% of prey cephalopods for Thunnus obesus. From frequency of occurrences in fish stomach contents, 0. rancureli seems to live in epipelagic or upper mesopelagic waters, abundant around the bottom of mixing layer, and thus plays an important role among food of T. obesus and T. albacares. From the species composition of eaten cephalopods, the major large pelagic fish discrete feeding depth with minor overlaps, such as, surface layer for bill- and swordfish, around bottom of mixing layer for tunas, and mid water for rnidwater scornbrids. Only Alepisaurus ferox seems to be a vertical wonderer

Visualization of torn anterior cruciate ligament using 3-dimensional computed tomography

Recently, a remnant-preserving anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction technique has been developed. However, the pre-operative condition of remnant ACL is occasionally difficult to evaluate by magnetic resonance imaging. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of pre-operative visualization of remnant ACL using three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT). The remnant ACL in 25 patients was examined by 3D-CT before ACL reconstruction surgery. Findings on 3D-CT images and arthroscopy were compared. The 3D-CT images were classified into 4 groups: Group A, remnant fibers attached to the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL); Group B, those located between the PCL and the lateral wall; Group C, those attached to the lateral wall; and Group D, no identifiable remnant fibers on the tibial side. These groups were made up of 4, 3, 9 and 9 patients, respectively. Findings on 3D-CT images were identical to those during arthroscopy in 20 of 25 cases (80%). Remnant ACL can be accurately evaluated using 3D-CT in 80% of cases of torn ACL. This novel method is a useful technique for pre-operative assessment of remnant ACL

Przypadek przejściowego bloku przedsionkowo-komorowego z przewodzeniem 2:1, który ustąpił po suplementacji tyroksyną zastosowaną w celu leczenia subklinicznej postaci niedoczynności tarczycy

Mężczyznę w wieku 42 lat przyjęto do szpitala, w którym pracują autorzy niniejszego doniesienia, z powodu napadów kołatania serca. Changes of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses (BAERs) in a Brain Stem Ischemic Model Using Embolization Technique in Cats, a Preliminary Study

In order to evaluate brain stem dysfunction related to ischemic process, the authors monitored the Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses (BAERs) with time in a brain stem ischemic model. 19 adult mongrel cats were divided into two groups: embolization (n=14) and sham operated control (n=5). Embolization was done by injecting cylindrical silicone embolus to the right vertebral artery. Each successful embolization of the basilar artery was then confirmed by vertebral angiography. BAERs were monitored before embolization and then 5-10 min, 15 min, 30 min, 60 min, 3 hr and 6 hr after embolization. The presence of ischemic lesion caused by embolization was confirmed by injecting 2% Evans blue solution 30 min before sacrificing the animals. Leakage of the dye was observed. In embolized animals, significant (Student t test, p<0.05) delay of interpeak latencies of waves 1-3, 3-5, and 1-5 was observed 15 min after embolization. This delay became more significant (p<0.01) 30 min after embolization. These results provide evidence for the usefulness of BAERs monitoring which can be used to complement other diagnostic methods for patients with vertebrobasilar insufficiency and/or infarction

Study on charged particle productions in proton-nucleus reactions at 392 MeV

Double differential cross sections of charged particle production for 392 MeV protons were measured with ΔE-E counter telescopes consisting of two surface barrier silicon detectors and a GSO(Ce) scintillator. The experimental results were compared with the INC code which was newly developed by the presenting author. The code is based on a simple INC model but has introduced two fragment production processes. From our results, a combination of these processes appears to be effective to describe charged particle productions in the intermediate-energy range
