Stimulation of Dmc1-mediated DNA strand exchange by the human Rad54B protein

The process of homologous recombination is indispensable for both meiotic and mitotic cell division, and is one of the major pathways for double-strand break (DSB) repair. The human Rad54B protein, which belongs to the SWI2/SNF2 protein family, plays a role in homologous recombination, and may function with the Dmc1 recombinase, a meiosis-specific Rad51 homolog. In the present study, we found that Rad54B enhanced the DNA strand-exchange activity of Dmc1 by stabilizing the Dmc1–single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) complex. Therefore, Rad54B may stimulate the Dmc1-mediated DNA strand exchange by stabilizing the nucleoprotein filament, which is formed on the ssDNA tails produced at DSB sites during homologous recombination

Oleic acid induced pulmonary edema was subjected as an experimental model of ARDS. Three adult mongrel dogs were injected with 0.09 ml/kg of oleic acid into the pulmonary artery and sacrificed 2 hours later. Light and electron microscopic studies were carried out on the pulmonary specimen. The light microscopic findings showed bronchovascular cuffs and alveolar flooding. The electron microscopic findings of the mildly to moderately damaged lesions showed that the interstitial tissues were thickened with edema fluid and alveolar spaces were filled with plasma exudate containing erythrocytes, strands of fibrin, macrophages, and electron dense material that surfactant and lamellar bodies resembled, while the capillary endothelium and alveolar epithelium appeared normal. The electron microscopic findings of severely damaged lesions showed that both endothelium and epithelium were degenerative. It was concluded that ultrastructural changes were more characteristic of permeability than of hemodynamic edema

The significance of physical exercise and attempts of detecting early pulmonary fibrous lesions using resultant parameters were described in cases with pulmonary fibrosis and pneumoconiosis. Although the usefulness of A-aDo2 has been pointed out long before the use of the respiratory index (A-aDo2/Pao2×100) instead of A-aDo2 itself was thought to be more effective. In relation to this, the change of the pulmonary diffusing capacity associated with physical exercise was thought to reflect the pulmonary reserve capacity. As regards the ventilatory function, the usefulness of the ventilatory index, exercise index and VD/VT was suggested by the present study

Pulmonary Lymphangiomyomatosis in Childhood? : Marked Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation of the Lung in a Preadolescent Girl with Repeated Pneumothorax and Progressive Dyspnea

A 13-year-old girl with repeated spontaneous pneumothorax and progressive dyspnea is described. The biopsy specimen of the lung showed marked proliferation of smooth muscle cells in the thickened bullous wall and alveolar septa, which was similar to the findings of the pulmonary lymphangiomyomatosis. Pulmonary lymphangiomyomatosis is one of the diseases which should be considered when children have progressive dyspnea, chylous effusions and repeated spontaneous pneumothorax

Thermal annealing process plays an important role in the formation of ferroelectric phase in Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) thin films. In this study, the annealing process of the HZO capacitors is demonstrated using ultraviolet (UV)-LED, for the first time. Since the absorptance of the HZO films with TiN electrodes is highest in UV region, the UV-LED annealing process is promising to achieve a much more energy-efficient annealing process than a conventional halogen lamp RTA method. It was experimentally confirmed that UV-LED annealing reduces the energy consumption by nearly half compared to the conventional method. The ferroelectric characteristics obtained by this method are comparable to those achieved by the halogen lamp RTA process at 400-450°C. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) pattern shows that no monoclinic phase is formed and only the tetragonal and orthorhombic phases are confirmed. It is also confirmed that there is the in-plane tensile stress remaining after the UV-LED annealing process, which is necessary for the formation of the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase
