    An exploratory study of the types and roles of skincare advertising visuals in magazines

    Despite the observations that visuals are almost always present in skincare ads, and that they are noticed to a greater extent than the text in these ads, there appears to be virtually no publicly available research that has analysed the visual content of skincare ads. As visuals might be useful to consumers in assessing the effectiveness of skincare products, their role in influencing consumer behaviour needs to be researched. Before such research is undertaken, it is necessary to investigate visuals that are actually employed by skincare marketers given the large number of products and varied visual cues or stimuli that seem to exist. The purpose of this research is to identify some of the types (or elements) and roles (or functions) of skincare advertising visuals and examine the extent to which they are evident in ads selected from the April through August 2005 issues of four popular womens magazines in Australia. 24 elements and five functions of skincare advertising visuals were identified, and their presence or absence was assessed in a sample of 52 ads. Due to the exploratory and time-specific nature of this study, future research that audits the visual content of magazine advertisements in the skincare market over a longer period could facilitate an extensive investigation of its impact on consumer attitudes and behaviour

    Impact of Immigration on Native and Ethnic Consumer Identity via Body Image

    This research focuses on consumer identity of two under-researched but growing immigrant communities in Australia via the lens of the body image construct. Consistent with an emerging stream of research, body image is viewed as a part of identity. Given the variety of goods and services that have an impact on consumers’ perceptions of their body, and because consumers use products to create and convey desired identities, body image is also viewed as a part of consumer identity. Considering literature on identity, body image, and acculturation, exploratory research was undertaken to determine the impact of immigration on the identities of both immigrants and natives. Specifically, focus groups were conducted on two generations of Filipino- and Indian-Australian women as well as Anglo-Australian women. It was found that second generation immigrants have dual consumer identities where they balance the values, attitudes and lifestyles of both their home (i.e., native or heritage) and host cultures whereas first generation immigrants tend to retain their native consumer identity even if they appear to adopt values, attitudes, and lifestyles of the host culture. The impact of immigrants on consumer identities of native residents who are typically in the majority (i.e., the Anglo group) was not evident. Theoretical and practical implications including recommendations for marketing practitioners are then discussed followed by suggestions for future research

    Predictors of the groupwork experience: generic skill development, peer appraisals, and country of residence

    Humphrey et al. (1997) argued that a range of generic skills are important in enhancing the experience of groupwork for students. These skills include problem solving skills, leadership skills, research skills, study skills, and communication skills. However, little is known about the extent to which the development of such skills impact on the students' experience of groupwork, Students are also rarely given opportunities to develop their performance management skills in group assignments, despite often being expected to evaluate the performance of their peers. Those doing the appraisal may not learn how to provide feedback and justify their evaluations. It also means that those being appraised do not receive feedback regarding their strengths and whereimprovements are needed. As a consequence, students tend to report negative experiences of groupwork when they have to assess and be assessed by their peers. The current study aims to examine the effects of generic skill development and peerevaluation on the students' evaluation of their group experience, following their participation on a group assignment

    Effect of herbal combination of triphala and Garcinia cambogia extracts on liver function test and kidney function test in high fat diet induced obesity in rats

    Background: Obesity, a global epidemic, is a major risk factor for diabetes mellitus and cardio vascular diseases. Despite advances, the pharmacotherapy for obesity remains limited. Almost all medications for long term management of obesity have health issues. Due to the adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with many antiobesity medicines, the clinical trials are focussing on screening herbal medicines for use in the treatment of obesity, which have minimal ADRs.Methods: Rats were divided into eight groups of six each. The rats were first made obese by feeding high fat diet (HFD) for three weeks. Then treatment with the herbal extracts was given simultaneously with the HFD to the experimental groups. Rats were fed HFD for six weeks along with herbal extracts and the effect on their liver function test and kidney function test were evaluated.Results: The rats fed HFD and supplemented with herbal preparations of Triphala and G. cambogia for six weeks, showed significant improvement in liver function test and kidney function test related parameters as compared to the control group rats fed with HFD alone.Conclusions: Triphala and G. cambogia can counter the effects of HFD intake and have the potential for use as anti-obesity agents with desirable liver function test and kidney function test related parameters modulating properties

    Electronic structure of and Quantum size effect in III-V and II-VI semiconducting nanocrystals using a realistic tight binding approach

    We analyze the electronic structure of group III-V semiconductors obtained within full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method and arrive at a realistic and minimal tight-binding model, parameterized to provide an accurate description of both valence and conduction bands. It is shown that cation sp3 - anion sp3d5 basis along with the next nearest neighbor model for hopping interactions is sufficient to describe the electronic structure of these systems over a wide energy range, obviating the use of any fictitious s* orbital, employed previously. Similar analyses were also performed for the II-VI semiconductors, using the more accurate FP-LAPW method compared to previous approaches, in order to enhance reliability of the parameter values. Using these parameters, we calculate the electronic structure of III-V and II-VI nanocrystals in real space with sizes ranging upto about 7 nm in diameter, establishing a quantitatively accurate description of the band-gap variation with sizes for the various nanocrystals by comparing with available experimental results from the literature.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys.     Duplex–assisted internal carotid artery balloon angioplasty and stent placement: A novel approach to minimize or eliminate the use of contrast material

    BackgroundCarotid artery balloon angioplasty and stenting (CBAS) is emerging as an acceptable alternative to carotid endarterectomy in selected high-risk patients. Conversely, patients with pre-existing renal impairment, diabetes, or both may be harmed by the nephrotoxic contrast agents required during CBAS. We attempted to limit or eliminate the use of contrast material during CBAS.MethodsEighteen patients with severe carotid stenoses (>70%) underwent CBAS at our institution over the last 12 months with duplex scan-assisted CBAS. Of these, 12 were primary procedures, and 6 were performed for carotid re-stenosis. Fourteen patients (78%) were neurologically asymptomatic. The average age of these patients was 75 ± 11 years (range, 44–92 years). Hypertension, chronic renal insufficiency (serum creatinine level ≥1.5 mg/dL), coronary artery disease, diabetes, and smoking were present in 89%, 67%, 59%, 33%, and 28% of patients, respectively. Preoperative duplex carotid mapping was performed in all cases. All procedures were performed with patients under local anesthesia and light sedation.ResultsAn ATL HDI 5000 scanner with the SonoCT feature was used. The common femoral artery was cannulated with a single-entry needle under direct ultrasound visualization. Fluoroscopy was used to assist passage of the guidewire into the aorta and the common carotid artery. In only four cases (22%) was an aortic arch angiogram obtained. Selective catheterization of the internal and external carotid arteries was performed under ultrasound guidance. The distal cerebral protection device (17 cases) was placed under fluoroscopic guidance. Balloon width and length were chosen according to ultrasound measurements. Balloon and stent deployment were successfully achieved with ultrasound guidance alone in all cases. Appropriate stent apposition and resolution of the stenosis was confirmed by duplex scanning in all cases. Five patients (28%) were noted to have low (<100 mL/min) internal carotid artery volume flow after stent deployment (range, 20–88 mL/min; mean ± SD, 50 ± 25 mL/min). The internal carotid artery volume flow increased immediately after Filterwire retrieval in all cases and ranged from 136 to 400 mL/min (mean, 245 ± 107 mL/min). This increase was statistically significant (P < .02). No ipsilateral strokes or deaths occurred during follow-up from 1 to 12 months (mean follow-up, 5 months).ConclusionsDuplex scan-assisted CBAS is feasible and may reduce the need for intra-arterial contrast injection in selected patients deemed at high risk for renal failure from nephrotoxic contrast material. Additional advantages include direct visualization of the puncture site, precise position of the balloon and stent, and B-mode and hemodynamic confirmation of the adequacy of the technique

Regression-based analytical approaches however might fail to fully account for interactions between metabolites, rely on a priori selected input features and thus might suffer from poorer accuracy. Supervised machine learning methods can potentially be used in order to fully exploit the dimensionality and richness of the data. In this paper, we systematically implement and evaluate a set of supervised learning methods (L1 regression, random forest classifier) and compare them to traditional regression-based approaches for disease prediction using metabolomic data

    Voltage Stability Analysis of Grid-Connected Wind Farms with FACTS: Static and Dynamic Analysis

    Recently, analysis of some major blackouts and failures of power system shows that voltage instability problem has been one of the main reasons of these disturbances and networks collapse. In this paper, a systematic approach to voltage stability analysis using various techniques for the IEEE 14-bus case study, is presented. Static analysis is used to analyze the voltage stability of the system under study, whilst the dynamic analysis is used to evaluate the performance of compensators. The static techniques used are Power Flow, V–P curve analysis, and Q–V modal analysis. In this study, Flexible Alternating Current Transmission system (FACTS) devices- namely, Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) and Static Var Compensators (SVCs) - are used as reactive power compensators, taking into account maintaining the violated voltage magnitudes of the weak buses within the acceptable limits defined in ANSI C84.1. Simulation results validate that both the STATCOMs and the SVCs can be effectively used to enhance the static voltage stability and increasing network loadability margin. Additionally, based on the dynamic analysis results, it has been shown that STATCOMs have superior performance, in dynamic voltage stability enhancement, compared to SVCs

    Introduction: Childhood blepharokeratoconjunctivitis is a common lid margin inflammation with secondary ocular surface disease. Its etiology is unclear and there are no randomized controlled trials to support the superiority of any treatment option. / Areas covered: We searched the following databases; Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Ovid MEDLINE and affiliated Ovid databases, EMBASE, the ISRCTN registry, Clinical- Trials.gov and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. Due to the paucity of pediatric data we also considered information from articles focused on adults. / Expert commentary: Treatment is based on the assumption that the mechanisms of BKC and rosacea keratitis are the same: meibomian gland dysfunction, bacterial colonisation of the lid margin, delayed type hypersensitivity, Demodex folliculorum, genetic predisposition and Toll-like receptors inducing release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Generally accepted grading scales are needed. Randomized clinical trials are needed to evaluate treatment options. The effects of antibiotics, immunomodulators, osmoprotectants and essential fatty acids need further investigation
