Investigation of two-dimensional acoustic resonant modes in a particle separator
Within an acoustic standing wave particles experience acoustic radiation forces, a phenomenon which is exploited in particle or cell manipulation devices. When developing such devices, one-dimensional acoustic characteristics corresponding to the transducer(s) are typically of most importance and determine the primary radiation forces acting on the particles. However, radiation forces have also been observed to act in the lateral direction, perpendicular to the primary radiation force, forming striated patterns. These lateral forces are due to lateral variations in the acoustic field influenced by the geometry and materials used in the resonator. The ability to control them would present an advantage where their effect is either detrimental or beneficial to the particle manipulation process.The two-dimensional characteristics of an ultrasonic separator device have been modelled within a finite element analysis (FEA) package. The fluid chamber of the device, within which the standing wave is produced, has a width to height ratio of approximately 30:1 and it is across the height that a half-wavelength standing wave is produced to control particle movement. Two-dimensional modal analyses have calculated resonant frequencies which agree well with both the one-dimensional modelling of the device and experimentally measured frequencies. However, these two-dimensional analyses also reveal that these modes exhibit distinctive periodic variations in the acoustic pressure field across the width of the fluid chamber. Such variations lead to lateral radiation forces forming particle bands (striations) and are indicative of enclosure modes.The striation spacings predicted by the FEA simulations for several modes compare well with those measured experimentally for the ultrasonic particle separator device. It is also shown that device geometry and materials control enclosure modes and therefore the strength and characteristics of lateral radiation forces, suggesting the potential use of FEA in designing for the control of enclosure modes in similar particle manipulator devices
Dynamical equations for high-order structure functions, and a comparison of a mean field theory with experiments in three-dimensional turbulence
Two recent publications [V. Yakhot, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 63}, 026307, (2001) and
R.J. Hill, J. Fluid Mech. {\bf 434}, 379, (2001)] derive, through two different
approaches that have the Navier-Stokes equations as the common starting point,
a set of steady-state dynamic equations for structure functions of arbitrary
order in hydrodynamic turbulence. These equations are not closed. Yakhot
proposed a "mean field theory" to close the equations for locally isotropic
turbulence, and obtained scaling exponents of structure functions and an
expression for the tails of the probability density function of transverse
velocity increments. At high Reynolds numbers, we present some relevant
experimental data on pressure and dissipation terms that are needed to provide
closure, as well as on aspects predicted by the theory. Comparison between the
theory and the data shows varying levels of agreement, and reveals gaps
inherent to the implementation of the theory.Comment: 16 pages, 23 figure
Common promoter variant in cyclooxygenase-2 represses gene expression: evidence of role in acute-phase inflammatory response
Objective: Cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 is a key regulatory enzyme in the synthesis of prostanoids associated with trauma and inflammation. We investigated the COX-2 gene for functional variants that may influence susceptibility to disease.
Methods and results: The promoter of COX-2 was screened for variants in healthy subjects by use of polymerase chain reaction-based methods. Promoter activity was investigated by using reporter expression experiments in human lung fibroblasts. Patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery, with measurements of plasma markers linked to COX-2 activity, were genotyped for association studies. A common COX-2 promoter variant, -765G>C, was found and shown to be carried by >25% of a group of healthy UK subjects. The -765C allele had significantly lower promoter activity compared with -765G, basally (28±3% lower, P<0.005) and in serum-stimulated cells (31±2% lower, P<0.005). In patients subjected to coronary artery bypass graft surgery, the magnitude of rise in levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) was strongly genotype dependent. Compared with -765G homozygotes, patients carrying the -765C allele had significantly lower plasma CRP levels at 1 to 4 days after surgery (14% lower at the peak of CRP levels on day 3, P<0.05 for all time points).
Conclusions: For several acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, -765G>C may influence the variability of response observed
Ionization of Infalling Gas
H-alpha emission from neutral halo clouds probes the radiation and
hydrodynamic conditions in the halo. Armed with such measurements, we can
explore how radiation escapes from the Galactic plane and how infalling gas can
survive a trip through the halo. The Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) is one of
the most sensitive instruments for detecting and mapping optical emission from
the ISM. Here, we present recent results exploring the ionization of two
infallling high-velocity complexes. First, we report on our progress mapping
H-alpha emission covering the full extent of Complex A. Intensities are faint
(<100 mR; EM <0.2 pc cm^-6 but correlate on the sky and in velocity with 21-cm
emission. Second, we explore the ionized component of some Anti-Center Complex
clouds studied by Peek et al. (2007) that show dynamic shaping from interaction

Radiative corrections to hard spectator scattering in decays
We present the calculation of the next-to-leading corrections to the tree
amplitudes which appear in the description of non-leptonic B-decays in the
factorization approach. These corrections, together with radiative corrections
to the jet functions, represent the full next-to-leading contributions to the
dominant hard spectator scattering term generated by operators in the
decay amplitudes. Using obtained analytical results we estimate
branchings fractions in the physical (or BBNS) factorization scheme. We have
also found that the imaginary part generated in the hard spectator scattering
term is rather large compared to the imaginary part of the vertex contribution.Comment: text is improved and typos are corrected, accepted for publication in

Infrared regulators and SCETII
We consider matching from SCETI, which includes ultrasoft and collinear
particles, onto SCETII with soft and collinear particles at one loop. Keeping
the external fermions off their mass shell does not regulate all IR divergences
in both theories. We give a new prescription to regulate infrared divergences
in SCET. Using this regulator, we show that soft and collinear modes in SCETII
are sufficient to reproduce all the infrared divergences of SCETI. We explain
the relationship between IR regulators and an additional mode proposed for

We discuss two adult siblings who presented with symptoms of myalgia and rhabdomyolysis following exercise with myoglobinuria; genetic testing confirmed carnitine palmitoyltransferase II deficiency and resulted in institution of appropriate crisis management and dietary advice. We explore the phenotypic variability of this commonest fatty oxidation defect that remains under-diagnosed in the adult population and provide clues for early recognition and diagnosis
