Dynamics of axial separation in long rotating drums
We propose a continuum description for the axial separation of granular
materials in a long rotating drum. The model, operating with two local
variables, concentration difference and the dynamic angle of repose, describes
both initial transient traveling wave dynamics and long-term segregation of the

Spacelab 3 Mission Science Review
Papers and abstracts of the presentations made at the symposium are given as the scientific report for the Spacelab 3 mission. Spacelab 3, the second flight of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) orbital laboratory, signified a new era of research in space. The primary objective of the mission was to conduct applications, science, and technology experiments requiring the low-gravity environment of Earth orbit and stable vehicle attitude over an extended period (e.g., 6 days) with emphasis on materials processing. The mission was launched on April 29, 1985, aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger which landed a week later on May 6. The multidisciplinary payload included 15 investigations in five scientific fields: material science, fluid dynamics, life sciences, astrophysics, and atmospheric science
Pressure Contact Sounding Data for NASA's Atmospheric Variability Experiment (AVE 3)
The basic rawinsonde data are described at each pressure contact from the surface to sounding termination for the 41 stations participating in the AVE III measurement program that began at 0000 GMT on February 6 and ended at 1200 GMT on February 7, 1975. Soundings were taken at 3-hour intervals during a large period of the experiment from most stations within the United States east of about 105 degrees west longitude. Methods of data processing, change in reduction scheme since the AVE II pilot experiment, and data accuracy are briefly discussed. An example of contact data is presented, and microfiche cards of all the contact data are included in the appendix. The AVE III project was conducted to better understand and establish the extent of applications for meteorological satellite sensor data through correlative ground truth experiments and to provide basic experimental data for use in studies of atmospheric scales of-motion interrelationships

The Connection between Gamma-Ray Bursts and Extremely Metal-Poor Stars as Nucleosynthetic Probes of the Early Universe
The connection between the long GRBs and Type Ic Supernovae (SNe) has
revealed the interesting diversity: (i) GRB-SNe, (ii) Non-GRB Hypernovae (HNe),
(iii) X-Ray Flash (XRF)-SNe, and (iv) Non-SN GRBs (or dark HNe). We show that
nucleosynthetic properties found in the above diversity are connected to the
variation of the abundance patterns of extremely-metal-poor (EMP) stars, such
as the excess of C, Co, Zn relative to Fe. We explain such a connection in a
unified manner as nucleosynthesis of hyper-aspherical (jet-induced) explosions
Pop III core-collapse SNe. We show that (1) the explosions with large energy
deposition rate, , are observed as GRB-HNe and their yields
can explain the abundances of normal EMP stars, and (2) the explosions with
small are observed as GRBs without bright SNe and can be
responsible for the formation of the C-rich EMP (CEMP) and the hyper metal-poor
(HMP) stars. We thus propose that GRB-HNe and the Non-SN GRBs (dark HNe) belong
to a continuous series of BH-forming stellar deaths with the relativistic jets
