Ground Water Monitoring Project for Arkansas, Phase III
This report is composed of two parts. The first part is an interpretation of the pesticide and nitrate data collected in Woodruff County based on samples collected during 1994. Because there is an indication that there were hydrological differences between 1994 and 1995, and because most of the pesticide data is from 1994, this interpretive portion is restricted to 1994 data. Six wells initially sampled in 1994 that contained pesticides had continuing contamination in re-sampling in 1994 and 1995. Part II lists a seventh well in Woodruff County that contained pesticides in February and May of 199
Mechanism of Lysine 48 Selectivity during Polyubiquitin Chain Formation by the Ube2R1/2 Ubiquitin-Conjugating Enzyme
Lysine selectivity is of critical importance during polyubiquitin chain formation because the identity of the lysine controls the biological outcome. Ubiquitins are covalently linked in polyubiquitin chains through one of seven lysine residues on its surface and the C terminus of adjacent protomers. Lys 48-linked polyubiquitin chains signal for protein degradation; however, the structural basis for Lys 48 selectivity remains largely unknown. The ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme Ube2R1/2 has exquisite specificity for Lys 48, and computational docking of Ube2R1/2 and ubiquitin predicts that Lys 48 is guided to the active site through a key electrostatic interaction between Arg 54 on ubiquitin and Asp 143 on Ube2R1/2. The validity of this interaction was confirmed through biochemical experiments. Since structural examples involving Arg 54 in protein-ubiquitin complexes are exceedingly rare, these results provide additional insight into how ubiquitin-protein complexes can be stabilized. We discuss how these findings relate to how other ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes direct the lysine specificity of polyubiquitin chains

Incommensurate Transverse Anisotropy Induced by Disorder and Spin-Orbit-Vibron Coupling in Mn12-acetate
It has been shown within density-functional theory that in Mn-acetate
there are effects due to disorder by solvent molecules and a coupling between
vibrational and electronic degrees of freedom. We calculate the in-plane
principal axes of the second-order anisotropy caused by the second effect and
compare them with those of the fourth-order anisotropy due to the first effect.
We find that the two types of the principal axes are not commensurate with each
other, which results in a complete quenching of the tunnel-splitting
oscillation as a function of an applied transverse field.Comment: Will be presented at MMM conference 200
Effects of a seaweed extract on weanling pig growth performance and immune function during an acute enteric disease challenge
A total of 95 pigs (initially 15 lb and 17
d of age) was used in a 28 d growth trial to
determine the effects of Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed extract (ANOD) on weanling pig growth performance and immune function in response to enteric disease challenge with Salmonella typhimurium (ST). Experimental treatments were arranged in a 2 x 4 factorial with main effects of disease challenge (control vs. ST challenge) and dietary addition of ANOD (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0% of diet). Results suggest little beneficial effect of dietary ANOD on growth performance or immune response in the presence or absence of ST challenge
Effects of a quillaja saponaria extract on weanling pig growth performance and immune function during an acute enteric disease challenge
A total of 96 pigs (initially 19 lb and 17 d of age) was used in a 28 d growth trial to
determine the effects of Quillaja saponaria
(QS) extract on weanling pig growth performance and immune function in response to enteric disease challenge with Salmonella
typhimurium (ST). Experimental treatments
were arranged in a 2 × 4 factorial with main
effects of disease challenge (control vs. ST
challenge) and dietary addition of QS (0, 4,
8, or 16 oz/ton). The results suggest little
beneficial effect of QS on growth performance
or immune response in the presence or absence of ST challenge
