Migration and the child protection system in Australia : examining African migrants’ parenting practices and parental experiences of child protection intervention
As international migration is increasing, scholars, policy-makers, institutions and practitioners who work with families are paying closer attention to the diverse parenting practices of migrant communities. For most Western nations such as Australia, child protection systems, usually established on individualistic principles, are in place to prevent child abuse and neglect by allowing children to live in safe, loving and supportive home environments. Often these objectives are governed by legal frameworks and monitored by the government (Australian Government, 2014, Australian Institute of Family Studies, 2016). Individualistic principles may be at odds with how migrants to Australia raise their children. Sub-Saharan African migrants represent a sub-set of migrants whose childrearing practices are grounded in collectivist worldviews and influenced by their cultural beliefs and values. This study focusses on sub-Saharan African migrant communities and the child protection system in Australia. It aims to explore and understand sub-Saharan African migrant childrearing practices and to what extent cultural beliefs, values, attitudes, practices, and migration experiences influence their parenting practices while settling in Australia. The study findings show how sub-Saharan African migrant parents negotiate the balance between finding ways to preserve their cultural values while parenting in a new culture. Some sub-Saharan African values and beliefs that shape childrearing practices were maintained, new dimensions were introduced, while others were rejected or resisted. The study found a need for an exhaustive appreciation by child protection practitioners of the influence that culture, migration and post-migration experiences have on sub-Saharan African migrant family functioning. To successfully make decisions that are in the best interest of sub-Saharan African migrant children that come to the attention of the child protection system, discussions about sub-Saharan African children can only yield good outcomes when the child’s socio-cultural environment is considered. Culture and migration experiences contribute to how sub-Saharan African migrant families engage with the child protection system. As such, while working with sub-Saharan African migrant families, service providers are required to be culturally competent and sensitive in order to successfully meet the needs of sub-Saharan African migrant children. This study provides evidence that will be useful for the development and implementation of culturally effective early intervention strategies within the Australia child protection system, particulary within the current era 2020, where there has been increased attention given to the response to race related issues due to the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement and other global themes and trends pertaining to minority groups
Emerson, A Transcendental Propagandist
Nearly every modern language has been utilized to present to the reading public literary productions showing the importance of Ralph Waldo Emerson as a writer. Studies in this respect are to be found in German, French, Spanish, to say nothing of English. Monographs, essays, biographies, and treaties in all of these languages deal with one aspect or another of this man who had unprecedented influence on nineteenth century Americ
Analytic Determination of the Critical Coupling for Oscillators in a Ring
We study a model of coupled oscillators with bidirectional first nearest
neighbours coupling with periodic boundary conditions. We show that a stable
phase-locked solution is decided by the oscillators at the borders between the
major clusters, which merge to form a larger one of all oscillators at the
stage of complete synchronization. We are able to locate these four oscillators
as well as the size of major clusters in the vicinity of the stage of full
synchronization which we show to depend only on the set of initial frequencies.
Using the method presented here, we are able to obtain an analytic form of the
critical coupling, at which the complete synchronization state occurs.Comment: 5 pages and 3 figure
No More Professors:The Peaceful Revolution in the Department of Psychology at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, 1968
A three-minute silent amateur film gives a good impression of the climax of the 'Action for Democracy', a campaign meant to completely change the governance and educational structure of the department of psychology at the Dutch University of Groningen. This climax was a mass meeting held on 28–29 March 1969 in which many decisions were made that completely changed the structure of the department. The intention of this meeting was to remove the old hierarchy, bringing down the 'ivory tower' ruled by the professors, and to replace this with democratic structures in which both students and staff members other than professors would gain a voice. This chapter presents possible explanations for the peaceful nature of the student revolution using the ideas of Hans Righart, James Kennedy, and Kees Schuyt and Ed Taverne, historians who have provided general analyses of the Dutch student revolts of the 1960s

Educating peace amid accusations of indoctrination:a Dutch peace education curriculum in the polarised political climate of the 1970s
Within the polarised political culture of the 1970s, in which political differences were emphasised instead of being played down, Dutch right-wing politicians frequently accused left-wing politicians and educators of indoctrination in educational settings. In this period of economic stagnation and an ongoing Cold War, peace education - which was vulnerable to accusations of indoctrination - became an optional part of the secondary school curriculum. This article addresses the aims and strategies of the Working Group for Peace Education in implementing the peace education curriculum and relates it to politics, place and pedagogy. The study centres on the content, intentions, and methods of the Working Group's curriculum, especially with regard to topics relating to the Vietnam War and nuclear weapons. The results suggest that the members of the Working Group for Peace Education aspired to educate young people to become citizens who would be actively engaged in global problems. Sensitivity to possible accusations of indoctrination led the Working Group to present these ideals with caution
Pengendalian Hama Ulat Menggunakan Larutan Daun Pepaya dalam Peningkatan Produksi Sawi (Brassica Juncea L.)
This research was conducted from March to May 2016 at Bina Putra Garden, Guntung Payung, Landasan UlinDistrict, Banjarbaru. The Purpose of study to determine the effect of papaya leaf solution and the better concentration to against leaf-eating caterpillars pests and to promoted mustard production. The experimental design used a randomized block design one way with four of solution of papaya leaf percentage treatments (0, 40, 70 and 100). All treatments were made in the formulation 100 ml of solution. Study results showed that papaya leaf solution concentration of 100% is capable to control leaf- eating caterpillar pets and production of mustard
Pengaruh Metode Pengeringan Granulator Terhadap Kandungan Asam Glutamat Serbuk Petis Limbah Pindang Ikan Layang (Decapterus Spp.)
Fish paste is made from boiling of fish, mussel and shrimp by product which is viscous like sauce. Fish paste is high glutamic acid content that is used as food flavoring. Therefore, it may possibly making fish paste powder from mackerel scad byproducts due to high content of glutamic acids. The aimed of this research were to determine the effect of granulator drying method to glutamic acid content, the chemical and physical characteristic of the fish paste powder of mackerel scad fish boiled by product. The used research method was a randomized block design with three different treatments method of drying granulator (50oC for 5 hours, 60oC for 4 hours and 70oC for 3 hours). Quality variable measured were glutamic acid, moisture contnet, protein, lipids, ash, carbohydrate and hedonic test. The result of the research showed that the method of granulator drying on fish paste powder of mackerel scad fish boiled by product had significantly affected to glutamic acid content on treatment 50oC for 5 hours which was showed the high content of glutamic acids 10,12%. Protein content and lipid content also showed the high amount at 50oC for 5 hours with 31,73% and 4,62% respectively, meanwhile at 70oC for 3 hours treatment gave the low moisture content (21,37%), ash content (6,16%) and carbohydrate content (65,79%). The high hedonic test (7,31 7,49) be found at temperature 60oC for 4 hours
Multistable behavior above synchronization in a locally coupled Kuramoto model
A system of nearest neighbors Kuramoto-like coupled oscillators placed in a
ring is studied above the critical synchronization transition. We find a
richness of solutions when the coupling increases, which exists only within a
solvability region (SR). We also find that they posses different
characteristics, depending on the section of the boundary of the SR where the
solutions appear. We study the birth of these solutions and how they evolve
when {K} increases, and determine the diagram of solutions in phase space.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure
