    Effects of galactic magnetic field on the UHECR correlation studies with starburst galaxies

    We estimate the biases caused by the coherent deflection of cosmic rays due to the Galactic magnetic field (GMF) in maximum-likelihood analysis for searches of ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) sources in the literature. We simulate mock event datasets with a set of assumptions for the starburst galaxy (SBG) source model (arXiv:1801.06160), coherent deflection by a GMF model (arXiv:1204.3662,arXiv:1210.7820), and mixed-mass composition (arXiv:1901.03338); we then conduct a maximum-likelihood analysis without accounting for the GMF in the same manner as previous studies. We find that the anisotropic fraction fanif_{\rm ani} is estimated systematically lower than the true value. We estimate the true parameters which are compatible with the best-fit parameters reported in (arXiv:1801.06160), and find that except for a narrow region with a large anisotropic fraction and small separation angular scale a wide parameter space is still compatible with the experimental results. We also develop a maximum-likelihood method that takes into account the GMF model and confirm in the MC simulations that we can estimate the true parameters within a 1σ\sigma contour under the ideal condition that we know the event-by-event mass and the GMF

    The Effects of Job Entry Methods on Outcomes in Switching Jobs (Japanese)

    From the 1990s onward, employment mismatching was a conspicuous problem in Japan and the development of an external labor market to enable the smooth allocation of the labor force became a pressing issue in order to promote structural reform and economic recovery. In that context, we examined job-switching trends, focusing particularly on the effects of job entry methods, which play an intermediary role in labor force allocation. In order to identify the effects of job entry methods, this paper analyzed the relationship between job entry methods and labor market outcomes for job switchers, based on a special aggregation of the Survey on Employment Trends published by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and its regression analysis. Labor market outcomes were measured by the length of time required to find a new job ("no-job duration") and the change in wages between the previous and current jobs. The results of the analysis showed that the role played by information intermediation of the job entry methods is an important one, since "friends and relatives" and "introduction by the former employer" were more effective in producing favorable labor market outcomes than "public employment security offices"; that there is potential for "public employment security offices" to achieve better labor market outcomes by strengthening their information intermediation function; and that although "private employment agencies" are effective in producing favorable labor market outcomes and are expected to develop further, they cannot meet the needs of those who have difficulty finding employment, nor is their effect significant in provincial areas, so other job entry methods will continue to be important.

    A Comparative Analysis of Job Entry Methods in Japan, the U.S. and Europe (Japanese)

    Focusing on job entry methods used by job switchers, such as "employment agencies", "advertisements" and "friends and relatives," we conducted a study comparing Japan, the U.S. and major European countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the U.K.) to examine the relationship between the job entry methods and labor market outcomes as indicated by the "no-job duration" (the time between leaving one job and starting another) and the wage change (the difference between wages in the former job and the current job), through descriptive statistical analysis and regression analysis of micro data from each of the target countries. We conducted the analysis concerning Japan ourselves, while analysis of the U.S. and Europe was conducted by Hashimoto (2004) and Fahr and Schneider (2004) in response to RIETI requests. This paper uses the results of these three analytical studies to compare Japan, the U.S. and Europe. The results of the comparison confirmed that in all three regions "public employment agencies" fulfill the role of providing a job search method for workers who are disadvantaged in the labor market, such as those who were separated from their jobs involuntarily, those with a low level of formal education, and older workers. They also confirmed that in most countries "private employment agencies" achieve relatively better labor market outcomes. Furthermore, as far as the data up to 2000 used for the study indicates, in Japan there is still room for improvement in labor market outcomes achieved by "public employment agencies" relative to other entry methods, compared to Europe and the U.S.

    Exploring autistic-like traits relating to empathic attitude and psychological distress in hospital pharmacists

    BACKGROUND: Pharmacists are expected to play a key role in modern cancer care. Research suggests that an empathic approach and attitude in medical staff improves the quality of patient care. An empathic attitude and psychological distress are thought to be associated with autistic-like traits, but little is known about such traits. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to clarify the associations among autistic-like traits, empathic attitude in a medical context, and psychological health in hospital pharmacists. SETTING: Eligibility criteria for inclusion were certified pharmacists working at hospitals for patient care who returned their questionnaires. METHOD: Eight hundred and twenty-three hospital pharmacists completed a number of self-administered questionnaires anonymously by mail. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Scores were obtained on the Autism-Spectrum Quotient, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy, the General Health Questionnaire-12, and subscales of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (Perspective Taking, IRI-Empathic Concern, IRIPersonal Distress). We performed correlation and mediation analyses to confirm that the empathy and general health questionnaires were associated with autism-spectrum quotient scores, and with each IRI subscale. RESULTS: Complete responses were obtained from 379 pharmacists comprising 151 males (39.8 %) with a mean age of 37.7 ± 10.8 years (missing data, n = 13) and a median of 11 years after qualification as a pharmacist. Autism-Spectrum Quotient scores were inversely correlated with empathy (r = -0.22, p < 0.001) and positively correlated with general health scores (r = 0.40, p < 0.001). In the models with mediation, the inverse correlation between autism-spectrum quotient and empathy scores was mediated indirectly by IRI-Perspective Taking and IRI-Empathic Concern, and the positive correlation between autism-spectrum quotient and general health was mediated indirectly by IRI-Personal Distress. There were also direct effects, with significant effects of autism-spectrum quotient on empathy and general health scores. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that autistic-like traits affect both empathic attitude in a medical context and the psychological health of pharmacists. We recommend that to improve empathy in those with high levels of autistic-like traits, we may need to develop specialized interventions, such as improving communication skills training

    Numerical study of air-entraining and submerged vortices in a pump sump

    Numerical detection of harmful vortices in pump sumps, such as an air-entraining vortex (AEV) and a submerged vortex (SMV), is crucially important to develop the drain pump machinery. We performed numerical simulations of the benchmark experiments of the pump sump conducted by Matsui et al. (2006 and 2016) using the OpenFOAM and compared the simulation results with the experimental data considering the effects of turbulence model, grid density and detection method of the vortices. We studied the threshold of the gas-liquid volume fraction of the VOF method and the second invariant of velocity gradient tensor to identify AEV and SMV. The methods proposed in the present paper were found to be very effective for the detection of the vortices, and the simulation results by RANS with the SST k-omega model successfully reproduced the experimental data. LES with the Smagorinsky model, however, was sensitive to the grid system and difficult to reproduce the experimental data even for the finest grid system having 3.7 million cells in the present study

    Resting-state functional connectivity predicts recovery from visually induced motion sickness

VIMS generally evolves slowly during the viewing of a motion stimulus and, when the stimulus is removed, the recovery proceeds over time. Recent human neuroimaging studies have provided new insights into the neural bases of the evolution of VIMS. In contrast, no study has investigated the neural correlates of the recovery from VIMS. Study of the recovery process is critical for the development of a way to promote recovery and could provide further clues for understanding the mechanisms of VIMS. We thus investigated brain activity during the recovery from VIMS with functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging. We found enhanced recovery-related functional connectivity patterns involving brain areas such as the insular, cingulate and visual cortical regions, which have been suggested to play important roles in the emergence of VIMS. These regions also constituted large interactive networks. Furthermore, the increase in functional connectivity was correlated with the subjective awareness of recovery for the following five pairs of brain regions: insula–superior temporal gyrus, claustrum–left and right inferior parietal lobules, claustrum–superior temporal gyrus and superior frontal gyrus–lentiform nucleus. Considering the previous findings on the functions of these regions and the present results, it is suggested that the increase in FC may reflect brain processes such as enhanced interoceptive awareness to one’s own bodily state, a neuroplastic change in visual-processing circuits and/or the maintenance of visual spatial memory

    In vivo tracking transplanted cardiomyocytes derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells using nuclear medicine imaging

    Introduction: Transplantation of human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) is a promising treatment for heart failure. Information on long-term cell engraftment after transplantation is clinically important. However, clinically applicable evaluation methods have not yet been established. Methods: In this study, to noninvasively assess transplanted cell engraftment, human SLC5A5, which encodes a sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) that transports radioactive tracers such as 125I, 18F-tetrafluoroborate (TFB), and 99mTc-pertechnetate (99mTcO4−), was transduced into human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and nuclear medicine imaging was used to track engrafted human iPSC-CMs. Results: To evaluate the pluripotency of NIS-expressing human iPSCs, they were subcutaneously transplanted into immunodeficient rats. Teratomas were detected by 99mTcO4− single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT/CT) imaging. NIS expression and the uptake ability of 125I were maintained in purified human iPSC-CMs. NIS-expressing human iPSC-CMs transplanted into immunodeficient rats could be detected over time using 99mTcO4− SPECT/CT imaging. Unexpectedly, NIS expression affected cell proliferation of human iPSCs and iPSC-derived cells. Discussion: Such functionally designed iPSC-CMs have potential clinical applications as a noninvasive method of grafted cell evaluation, but further studies are needed to determine the effects of NIS transduction on cellular characteristics and functions
