    This paper will describe unique and extensive use of pre-woven and impregnated pi cross-sections in fabrication of a carbon composite demonstration structure for the Composite Crew Module (CCM) Program. The program is managed by the NASA Safety and Engineering Center with participants from ten NASA Centers and AFRL. Multiple aerospace contractors are participating in the design development, tooling and fabrication effort as well. The goal of the program is to develop an agency wide design team for composite habitable spacecraft. The specific goals for this development project are: a) To gain hands on experience in design, building and testing a composite crew module. b) To validate key assumptions by resolving composite spacecraft design details through fabrication and testing of hardware. This paper will focus on the design and fabrication issues supporting selection of the Lockheed Martin patented Pi pre-form to provide sound composite joints a numerous locations in the structure. This abstract is based on Preliminary Design data. The final design will continue to evolve through the fall of 2007 with fabrication mostly completed by conference date

    We report the first synthesis of pure aluminophosphate hydrate H2 (AlPO4-H2) and its structure; AlPO4-H2 is constructed exclusively from a hydrated chain building unit that also builds the 18-ring VPI-5 structure and has one-dimensional channels circumscribed by highly elliptical rings consisting often oxygen atoms, implications from the existence of this building unit for the synthesis of novel aluminophosphate molecular sieves and for the synthesis of aluminosilicate and silicate analogues of AlPO4-H2 and VPI-5 are discussed

    Determination of Linear Coefficients of Thermal Expansion of Thin Samples by Optical Lever

    In order to measure coefficients of thermal expansion of small samples varying from one to twenty millimeters in thickness an optical lever has been designed to allow detection of a change in thickness of the sample of plus or minus twenty Angstrom units. The dilatation is read in terms of the change of interference bands produced between two nearly parallel glass plates. A formula was developed which does away with continuous observation during the expansion. Through the use of this formula the accuracy of the result is comparable with that obtained by continuous observation. The samples do not have to be ground to a specified size, nor do they have to be optically flat. Adjustment of the sample in the apparatus requires about fifteen minutes

    CancerGenes: a gene selection resource for cancer genome projects

    The genome sequence framework provided by the human genome project allows us to precisely map human genetic variations in order to study their association with disease and their direct effects on gene function. Since the description of tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes several decades ago, both germ-line variations and somatic mutations have been established to be important in cancer—in terms of risk, oncogenesis, prognosis and response to therapy. The Cancer Genome Atlas initiative proposed by the NIH is poised to elucidate the contribution of somatic mutations to cancer development and progression through the re-sequencing of a substantial fraction of the total collection of human genes—in hundreds of individual tumors and spanning several tumor types. We have developed the CancerGenes resource to simplify the process of gene selection and prioritization in large collaborative projects. CancerGenes combines gene lists annotated by experts with information from key public databases. Each gene is annotated with gene name(s), functional description, organism, chromosome number, location, Entrez Gene ID, GO terms, InterPro descriptions, gene structure, protein length, transcript count, and experimentally determined transcript control regions, as well as links to Entrez Gene, COSMIC, and iHOP gene pages and the UCSC and Ensembl genome browsers. The user-friendly interface provides for searching, sorting and intersection of gene lists. Users may view tabulated results through a web browser or may dynamically download them as a spreadsheet table. CancerGenes is available at

    Communication and Group Perception: Extending the `Saying is Believing' Effect

    The saying-is-believing (SIB) effect occurs when tailoring a message to suit an audience influences a communicator's subsequent memories and impressions about the communication topic. Previous studies were restricted to one-person audiences and individuals as the communication topic. The present studies explored the SIB effect with multiple-person audiences and groups as the communication topic. In Study 1, the SIB effect occurred with a 1-person, but not a 3-person, audience. In Study 2, the SIB effect occurred with a 3-person audience when the audience explicitly validated communicators' messages. These findings demonstrate the generalizability of the SIB effect to group contexts, provide further evidence for a shared reality interpretation of this effect, and suggest a potentially important mechanism underlying stereotype development
