Relinquishing Control: What Romanian De Se Attitude Reports Teach Us About Immunity To Error Through Misidentification
Higginbotham argued that certain linguistic items of English, when used in indirect discourse, necessarily trigger first-personal interpretations. They are: the emphatic reflexive pronoun and the controlled understood subject, represented as PRO. PRO is special, in this respect, due to its imposing obligatory control effects between the main clause and its subordinates ). Folescu & Higginbotham, in addition, argued that in Romanian, a language whose grammar doesn’t assign a prominent role to PRO, de se triggers are correlated with the subjunctive mood of certain verbs. That paper, however, didn’t account for the grammatical diversity of the reports that display immunity to error through misidentification in Romanian: some of these reports are expressed by using de se triggers; others are not. Their IEM, moreover, is not systematically lexically controlled by the verbs, via their theta-roles; it is, rather, determined by the meaning of the verbs in question. Given the data from Romanian, I will argue, the phenomenon of IEM cannot be fully explained starting either from the syntactical or the lexical structure of a language
Microthyriaceae sp., an endophytic fungus
In screening for natural products with antiparasitic activity, an endophytic fungus, strain F2611, isolated from above-ground tissue of the tropical grass Paspalum conjugatum (Poaceae) in Panama, was chosen for bioactive principle elucidation. Cultivation on malt extract agar (MEA) followed by bioassayguided chromatographic fractionation of the extract led to the isolation of the new polyketide integrasone B (1) and two known mycotoxins, sterigmatocystin (2) and secosterigmatocystin (3). Sterigmatocystin (2) was found to be the main antiparasitic compound in the fermentation extract of this fungus, possessing potent and selective antiparasitic activity against Trypanosoma cruzi, the cause of Chagas disease, with an IC50 value of 0 13 lmol l 1. Compounds 2 and 3 showed high cytotoxicity against Vero cells (IC50 of 0 06 and 0 97 lmol l 1, respectively). The new natural product integrasone B (1), which was co-purified from the active fractions, constitutes the second report of a natural product possessing an epoxyquinone with a lactone ring and exhibited no significant biological activity. Closing of the Induced Gap in a Hybrid Superconductor-Semiconductor Nanowire
Hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowires are predicted to undergo a
field-induced phase transition from a trivial to a topological superconductor,
marked by the closure and re-opening of the excitation gap, followed by the
emergence of Majorana bound states at the nanowire ends. Many local
density-of-states measurements have reported signatures of the topological
phase, however this interpretation has been challenged by alternative
explanations. Here, by measuring nonlocal conductance, we identify the closure
of the excitation gap in the bulk of the semiconductor before the emergence of
zero-bias peaks. This observation is inconsistent with scenarios where
zero-bias peaks occur due to end-states with a trivially gapped bulk, which
have been extensively considered in the theoretical and experimental
literature. We observe that after the gap closes, nonlocal signals fluctuate
strongly and persist irrespective of the presence of local-conductance
zero-bias peaks. Thus, our observations are also incompatible with a simple
picture of clean topological superconductivity. This work presents a new
experimental approach for probing the spatial extent of states in Majorana
wires, and reveals the presence of a regime with a continuum of spatially
extended states and uncorrelated zero-bias peaks
X-ray diffraction measurements of plasticity in shock-compressed vanadium in the region of 10-70 GPa
We report experiments in which powder-diffraction data were recorded from polycrystalline vanadium foils, shock-compressed to pressures in the range of 10-70 GPa. Anisotropic strain in the compressed material is inferred from the asymmetry of Debye-Scherrer diffraction images and used to infer residual strain and yield strength (residual von Mises stress) of the vanadium sample material. We find residual anisotropic strain corresponding to yield strength in the range of 1.2 GPa-1.8 GPa for shock pressures below 30 GPa, but significantly less anisotropy of strain in the range of shock pressures above this. This is in contrast to our simulations of the experimental data using a multi-scale crystal plasticity strength model, where a significant yield strength persists up to the highest pressures we access in the experiment. Possible mechanisms that could contribute to the dynamic response of vanadium that we observe for shock pressures ≥30 GPa are discussed
Femtosecond X-Ray Diffraction Studies of the Reversal of the Microstructural Effects of Plastic Deformation during Shock Release of Tantalum
We have used femtosecond x-ray diffraction (XRD) to study laser-shocked fiber-textured polycrystalline tantalum targets as the 37-253 GPa shock waves break out from the free surface. We extract the time and depth-dependent strain profiles within the Ta target as the rarefaction wave travels back into the bulk of the sample. In agreement with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations the lattice rotation and the twins that are formed under shock-compression are observed to be almost fully eliminated by the rarefaction process
Subjects, Topics, and Anchoring to the Context
The article discusses the connection between the syntactic and semantic properties of weak, strong, and referential DP subjects. In particular, I argue that nominal expressions possess a situation argument and that their interpretation and their distribution follow from the presuppositional requirements that the determiner imposes on the individual argument and situation argument of its complement nominal. These presuppositional requirements, I then argue, are embodied by local relations of the subject to a distinct head in the C domain, Fin(0) in the system of Rizzi 1997, where specific referential values of discourse antecedents are accessible
