Software Defined Media: Virtualization of Audio-Visual Services

Internet-native audio-visual services are witnessing rapid development. Among these services, object-based audio-visual services are gaining importance. In 2014, we established the Software Defined Media (SDM) consortium to target new research areas and markets involving object-based digital media and Internet-by-design audio-visual environments. In this paper, we introduce the SDM architecture that virtualizes networked audio-visual services along with the development of smart buildings and smart cities using Internet of Things (IoT) devices and smart building facilities. Moreover, we design the SDM architecture as a layered architecture to promote the development of innovative applications on the basis of rapid advancements in software-defined networking (SDN). Then, we implement a prototype system based on the architecture, present the system at an exhibition, and provide it as an SDM API to application developers at hackathons. Various types of applications are developed using the API at these events. An evaluation of SDM API access shows that the prototype SDM platform effectively provides 3D audio reproducibility and interactiveness for SDM applications.Comment: IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC2017), Paris, France, 21-25 May 201

Rhabdomyolysis with Multiple Electrolyte Imbalances under Proton Pump Inhibitor Treatment after Total Thyroidectomy

A 90-year-old man presented with muscle weakness, difficulty concentrating, and dysphagia. About eighteen months prior to presentation, lansoprazole had been initiated to prevent stress ulcers; he also had a history of total thyroidectomy due to papillary thyroid cancer ten years prior. Laboratory findings were as follows: K 2.4 mEq/L, Ca 3.7 mg/dL, Mg 1.3 mg/dL, CK 5386 U/L, and intact PTH (iPTH) 14 pg/mL. Rhabdomyolysis with multiple electrolyte imbalances under proton pump inhibitor (PPI) treatment was diagnosed. We initiated intravenous hydration and electrolyte supplementation with discontinuation of PPI. After discontinuing PPI, the patient’s serum magnesium, potassium, and calcium levels normalised with oral vitamin D and calcium supplementation. PPIs can cause hypocalcaemia and hypokalaemia via hypomagnesemia; hypocalcaemia is also a common postoperative complication of thyroidectomy. Careful monitoring of electrolyte levels is required in patients with long-term PPI treatment, especially in post-thyroidectomy cases

A model of dynamic associative memory

A model of dynamic associative memories is proposed in this paper. The aim is to find all stored patterns, and to distinguish the stored and the spurious patterns. Aihara used chaotic neurons and showed that his model has a nonperiodic associative dynamics. In his model, however, it is difficult to distinguish the stored patterns from the others, because the state of the network changes continually. We propose such a new model of neurons that each neuron changes its output to the other when the accumulation of its internal state exceeds a certain threshold. By computer experiments, we show that the state of the network stays at the stored pattern for a while and then travels around to another pattern, and so on. Furthermore, when the number of the stored patterns is small, the stored and the spurious patterns can be distinguished using interval of the network staying these patterns

2020-11-20.Introduction: Considering higher risks of candidates for cardiac regenerative therapy with compromised cardiac function, it is anticipated to develop less invasive surgical procedures. In the present study, we aimed to develop a prototype of totally endoscopic cell sheet delivery device and evaluate the surgical technique for epicardial cell sheet placement using three-dimensional (3D) printed simulators based on human computed tomography data. Methods: We designed an endoscopic cell sheet delivery device with outer and inner frame with self-expandable applicator which can be opened in thoracic cavity. We launched spout line to provide liquids on the applicator surface and tension line to gently bend the applicator dorsally. We prepared human mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) sheets and compared wet/dry conditions of 3D printed heart/porcine heart and applicator to identify suitable conditions for cell sheet transplantation. Finally we validated the feasibility of endoscopic transplantation to anterior and lateral wall of left ventricle using 3D printed simulators. Results: Moist condition of both 3D printed heart/porcine heart surface and applicator at transplantation yielded highest successful rate (100%, p = 0.0197). For both endoscopic transplantation sites, MSC sheets were successfully deployed. The procedure duration was 157 ± 23 s for anterior wall and 123 ± 13 s for the lateral wall in average, respectively. Conclusions: We developed a novel prototype of endoscopic cell sheet delivery device for minimally-invasive cardiac regenerative therapy utilizing a 3D printed simulator. The commercialization of the prototype may provide a safe minimally-invasive method to deliver potential cardiac regenerative therapy in the future
