    This article aims to describe and analyze the role of the Sentani Ethnic Council in the resolution of domestic violence experienced by Sentani women. Sentani society acknowledges that Sentani Tribal Council established in has several functions in political, economic, legal, security, and religious affairs. This study focused on the Sentani Tribal Council as a legal institution in solving domestic violence against Sentani women. The research problem is what factors encourage Sentani women to choose to resolve domestic conflicts through Sentani Tribal Council. This is a qualitative research that employed in-depth interview techniques and observation in the Sentani Ethnic Council courts. Interviews were carried out to victims of domestic violence, head of tribal council, and community leaders, domestic violence doer, and Sentani people. Sentani women who were victims of domestic violence went to the Sentani Ethnic Council to solve their problems due to several reasons, namely peaceful court, customary fine, and avoiding shame. There is a change in the customary fine from certain goods to rupiah currency. Although Sentani women obtained conflict resolution in the Sentani Ethnic Council, it did not provide justice yet. There are different views on domestic violence in Sentani. Some parties local government, church, tribal council, women, and victim perceived that domestic violence is violating human rights, therefore, must be sentenced. While the doers and young men in Sentani perceived that violence against women is common in their culture. From an anthropological perspective, domestic violence in Sentani is a debate between culture and rights in the context of cultural relativism

    Masyarakat adat merupakan salah satu kelompok masyarakat yang masih kuat menjaga sistem nilai tradisional dalam berbagai aspek kehidupan. Hal tersebut menjadikan masyarakat adat memiliki kekhasan nilai –nilai budaya. Salah satu kekhasan tersebut dapat ditemukan di masyarakat adat Kete'Kesu' Toraja Utara dalam keragaman permainan rakyat. Permainan rakyat lahir dari upacara ritual masyarakat adat sebagai upaya penanaman karakter bagi masyarakat. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menginventarisasi permainan rakyat yang ada di masyarakat adat Kete' Kesu' untuk selanjutnya dicari makna nilai yang terkandung dalam permainan rakyat tersebut. Penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif deskriptif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara pengamatan langsung ke lapangan dan melakukan wawancara tokoh adat dan anggota masyarakat Kete'Kesu'. Data yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis menggunakan paradigma teori fungsionalisme Bronislaw Malinowski. Hasil dari penelitian ini ditemukan adanya sejumlah permainan rakyat di Kete' Kesu' yakni Kalungkung tedong, Mapasilaga tedong, Ma'Timba, Palok', dan Pali'. Adapun makna dari permainan rakyat yang ada di masyarakat adat Ke'te' Kesu' tersebut dapat digunakan untuk penguatan nilai-nilai karakter di masyarakat

    The representation of homosexuality in Indonesian media tends to be discriminative and negative, with stigma, prejudice, and stereotypes. It occurs not only in the mainstream but also in the cyber media such as online news-portals. The discriminating views against homosexuals have even penetrated into the political sphere. In 2012, when Dede Oetomo, an activist of LGBTIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Queer) proposed as a candidate for the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) commissioner, various reactions arose from people as he was exposed by the media. The controversy of Dede Oetomo's candidacy occurs and spread widely, especially amongst online media portals. The public resistance to Dede Oetomo is mostly due to his gay identity. This paper studies how Dede Oetomo's candidacy as the Human Right Commissioner is portrayed in the Indonesian online portals, based on Robert Entman's framing model. The results show the online media portals' framing of homosexual issues is still influenced by the majority religion (Islam) and the local cultural norms. The portals also differ from one another concerning the way they depict the issue although showing similar resentment towards homosexuality.     Keywords: framing, homosexuality issues, online news, Dede Oetom

    Preventing mother to child transmission of HIV in Vietnam and Indonesia: diverging care dynamics

    How do women and frontline health workers engage in preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) in urban areas of Vietnam and Indonesia, where HIV is highly stigmatized and is associated with injecting drug use and sex work? This qualitative study explores local dynamics of care, using a mix of observations, focus group discussions, and interviews. In Indonesia the study was conducted in a community-based PMTCT program run by an NGO, while in Vietnam the study explored the care dynamics in routine PMTCT services, implemented by district and provincial public health facilities. In both of these PMTCT arrangements (the routine provider initiated approach in Vietnam and a more client-oriented system in Indonesia), pregnant women value the provision of HIV tests in antenatal care (ANC). Concerns are raised, however, by the unhappy few who test positive. These women are unsatisfied with the quality of counselling, and the failure to provide antiretroviral treatments. Acceptability of HIV testing in ANC is high, but the key policy issue from the perspective of pregnant women is whether the PMTCT services can provide good quality counselling and the necessary follow-up care. We find local level providers of PMTCT are pleased with the PMTCT program. In Vietnam, the PMTCT program offers health workers protection against HIV, since they can refer women away from the district health service for delivery. In Indonesia, community cadres are pleased with the financial incentives gained by mobilizing clients for the program. We conclude that achieving the global aims of reducing HIV infections in children by 50% requires a tailoring of globally designed public health programs to context-specific gendered transmission pathways of HIV, as well as local opportunities for follow-up care and social support

    Penelitian ini berjudul Fungsi Tradisi Ngumbah Pusaka Prabu Geusan Ulun di Sumedang Larang. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui struktur dan fungsi pada Ritual Ngumbah Pusaka. Pembahasan dalam penelitian ini memiliki beberapa fungsi yang ada dalam tradisi Ngumbah Pusaka dibahas dengan menggunakan teori Struktur Fungsionalisme. Tradisi ini di lakukan pada setiap bulan Maulid Nabi Muhammad saw. Dalam penelitian ini dilakukan dengan mengemukakan rumusan masalah mengenai struktur tradisi Ngumbah Pusaka Prabu Geusan Ulun dan fungsi tradisi Ngumbah Pusaka di Museum Prabu Geusan Ulun pada masyarakat Sumedang Larang.Tujuan yang ingin dicapai dalam penelitian ini bertitik tolak dari rumusan masalah yaitu untuk menjelaskan bagaimana struktur tradisi Ngumbah Pusaka Prabu Geusan Ulun, untuk mengetahui dan mendeskripsikan fungsi tradisi Ngumbah Pusaka Prabu Geusan Ulun pada Masyarakat Sumedang Larang. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data yaitu studi pustaka, observasi, wawancara dan analisis data. Berdasarkan Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa fungsi tradisi Ngumbah Pusaka di Museum Prabu Geusan Ulun merupakan ritual dengan struktur dan fungsi pertunjukan. Ada beberapa tahapan yaitu persiapan, kedua penyajian, dan tahap ketiga penutup. Fungsi tradisi Ngumbah Pusaka memiliki beberapa fungsi diantaranya fungsi-fungsi pada ritual Ngumbah Pusaka, fungsi ritual, fungsi hiburan, fungsi komunikasi, fungsi sosial dan fungsi religius
