An architecture for modular distributed simulation with agent-based models
Agent-based simulations are an increasingly popular means of exploring and understanding complex social systems. In order to be useful, these simulations must capture a range of aspects of the modeled situation, each possibly requiring distinct expertise. Moreover, different paradigms may be useful in modelling, ranging from those that use many lightweight reactive agents, to those that use cognitive agents, to those that focus on agent teams and organisational structures. There is need for an architecture which supports the development of a large simulation, through the integration of separately developed modules. This paper describes a framework and architecture which facilitates the integration of multiple agent-based simulations into a single global simulation. This architecture naturally supports distributed simulation and incremental development, which are ways of addressing the computational and conceptual complexity of such systems. In this paper we focus particularly on how to ensure proper management of simulation data that is affected by agents in different modules, at the same logical time. We also provide some preliminary performance evaluation addressing scalability, as well as a comparison of how other available systems handle the issue of shared data
First evidence for fin whale migration into the Pacific from Antarctic feeding grounds at Elephant Island

Additional funding from National Geographic / Disney+ supported field efforts by Hickmott.This study presents the first long-distance tracks of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) equipped with satellite transmitters off the Antarctic Peninsula. Southern Hemisphere fin whales were severely depleted by twentieth century industrial whaling, yet recently, they have returned to historical feeding grounds off the northern Antarctic Peninsula, forming large aggregations in austral summers. To date, our knowledge only extended to summer behaviour, while information regarding migration routes and the location of breeding and wintering grounds are lacking. During the austral autumn of 2021, we deployed nsatellite transmitters on four fin whales at Elephant Island. Two transmitters stopped working while the animals were still at the feeding grounds, while two continued to transmit during the transition from feeding activity to migration. Both migrating animals left the feeding ground on 15 April 2021, travelling northward into the Pacific and up along the Chilean coast. The most northerly position received before all tags stopped transmitting on 1 May 2021 was at 48°S. These tracks provide initial evidence of seasonal migratory routes and a first indication toward possible locations of winter destinations. This information, even if preliminary, is critical for investigations of population connectivity, population structure and the identification of breeding grounds of Southern Hemisphere fin whales.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Characterization of Prepreg Tack for Composite Manufacturing by Automated Fiber Placement
Automated fiber placement (AFP) has become the industry standard for large-scale production of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) to improve rate and reduce defects associated with manual layup. Still, defects generated during AFP processes require manual, painstaking inspection by technicians and rework of the part when substantial defects are found. Prepreg (carbon fiber infused with uncured epoxy resin) tack is one of the primary factors that influences the generation of defects that arise during auto-mated fiber placement (AFP). Tack, as it relates to AFP processes and defect formation, can be understood as a combination of two stages, cohesion and decohesion. During the cohesion phase, two pieces of prepreg are brought into contact under elevated temperature and pressure. Compaction of the resin within the contact area will result in a degree of intimate contact, I, between the mating prepreg surfaces. Defect formation, as a result of decohesion between prepreg surfaces, occurs after the cohesion phase and arises due to stress from events such as fiber placement over an existing defect, on a contoured path, etc. (Figure 1). Tack Measurements of Prepreg Tape at Variable Temperature and Humidity
NASAs Advanced Composites Project has established the goal of achieving a 30 percent reduction in the timeline for certification of primary composite structures for application on commercial aircraft. Prepreg tack is one of several critical parameters affecting composite manufacturing by automated fiber placement (AFP). Tack plays a central role in the prevention of wrinkles and puckers that can occur during AFP, thus knowledge of tack variation arising from a myriad of manufacturing and environmental conditions is imperative for the prediction of defects during AFP. A full design of experiments was performed to experimentally characterize tack on 0.25-inch slit-tape tow IM7/8552-1 prepreg using probe tack testing. Several process parameters (contact force, contact time, retraction speed, and probe diameter) as well as environmental parameters (temperature and humidity) were varied such that the entire parameter space could be efficiently evaluated. Mid-point experimental conditions (i.e., parameters not at either extrema) were included to enable prediction of curvature in relationships and repeat measurements were performed to characterize experimental error. Collectively, these experiments enable determination of primary dependencies as well as multi-parameter relationships. Slit-tape tow samples were mounted to the bottom plate of a rheometer parallel plate fixture using a jig to prevent modification of the active area to be interrogated with the top plate, a polished stainless steel probe, during tack testing. The probe surface was slowly brought into contact with the pre-preg surface until a pre-determined normal force was achieved (2-30 newtons). After a specified dwell time (0.02-10 seconds), during which the probe substrate interaction was maintained under displacement control, the probe was retracted from the surface (0.1-50 millimeters per second). Initial results indicated a clear dependence of tack strength on several parameters, with a particularly strong dependence on temperature and humidity. Although an increase in either of these parameters reduces tack strength, a maximum in tack was predicted to occur under conditions of low temperature and moderate humidity
Spatio-temporal variation in click production rates of beaked whales : implications for passive acoustic density estimation

Counts of acoustic cues (e.g., vocalizations), when corrected for detection probability, can be translated into animal density estimates by applying an individual cue production rate multiplier. It is essential to understand variation in these rates to avoid biased estimates. The most direct way to measure cue production rate is with animal-mounted acoustic recorders. This study utilized data from sound recording tags deployed on Blainville's (Mesoplodon densirostris, 19 deployments) and Cuvier's (Ziphius cavirostris, 16 deployments) beaked whales, in two locations per species, to explore spatial and temporal variation in click production rates. No spatial or temporal variation was detected within the average click production rate of Blainville's beaked whales when calculated over dive cycles (including silent periods between dives); however, spatial variation was detected when averaged only over vocal periods. Cuvier's beaked whales exhibited significant spatial and temporal variation in click production rates within vocal periods and when silent periods were included. This evidence of variation emphasizes the need to utilize appropriate cue production rates when estimating density from passive acoustic data.PostprintPeer reviewe

were hunted close to extinction in the 20th century (Clapham et al. 1999). Their
recovery is now a key international conservation goal, and they are important in marine
ecosystems as massive consumers that can promote primary production through
nutrient cycling (Roman et al. 2014). However, although abundance has been
assessed to monitor the recovery of some large whale populations (e.g., Barlow et al.
2011, Laake et al. 2012) many populations are wide-ranging and pelagic, and this
inaccessibility has generally impeded quantitative assessments of recovery (Peel et al.
2015). To augment traditional abundance monitoring, we suggest that photogrammetric
measures of individual growth and body condition can also inform about population
status, enabling assessment of individual health as well as population numbers. Photogrammetry
from manned aircraft has used photographs taken from directly above
whales to estimate individual lengths (Gilpatrick and Perryman 2008) and monitor growth trends (Fearnbach et al. 2011), and shape profiles can be measured to assess
body condition to infer reproductive and nutritional status (e.g., Perryman and Lynn
2002, Miller et al. 2012). Recently, Durban et al. (2015) demonstrated the utility of
an unmanned hexacopter for collecting aerial photogrammetry images of killer
whales (Orcinus orca); this provided a noninvasive, cost-effective, and safe platform
that could be deployed from a boat to obtain vertical images of whales. Here we
describe the use of this small, unmanned aerial system (UAS) to measure length and

Diverse foraging strategies by a marine top predator : sperm whales exploit pelagic and demersal habitats in the Kaikōura submarine canyon
Support for this work was provided from contributions by Ray Dalio to the WHOI Access to the Sea Fund.The submarine canyon off Kaikōura (New Zealand) is an extremely productive deep-sea habitat, and an important foraging ground for male sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). We used high-resolution archival tags to study the diving behaviour of sperm whales, and used the echoes from their echolocation sounds to estimate their distance from the seafloor. Diving depths and distance above the seafloor were obtained for 28 dives from six individuals. Whales foraged at depths between 284 and 1433 m, targeting mesopelagic and demersal prey layers. The majority of foraging buzzes occurred within one of three vertical strata: within 50 m of the seafloor, mid-water at depths of 700-900 m, and mid-water at depths of 400-600 m. Sperm whales sampled during this study performed more demersal foraging than that reported in any previous studies – including at Kaikōura in further inshore waters. This suggests that the extreme benthic productivity of the Kaikōura Canyon is reflected in the trophic preferences of these massive top predators. We found some evidence for circadian patterns in the foraging behaviour of sperm whales, which might be related to vertical movements of their prey following the deep scattering layer. We explored the ecological implications of the whales’ foraging preferences on their habitat use, highlighting the need for further research on how submarine canyons facilitate top predator hotspots.PostprintPeer reviewe

Thermal expansion and decomposition of jarosite: a high-temperature neutron diffraction study
The structure of deuterated jarosite, KFe{sub 3}(SO{sub 4}){sub 2}(OD){sub 6}, was investigated using time-of-flight neutron diffraction up to its dehydroxylation temperature. Rietveld analysis reveals that with increasing temperature, its c dimension expands at a rate {approx}10 times greater than that for a. This anisotropy of thermal expansion is due to rapid increase in the thickness of the (001) sheet of [Fe(O,OH){sub 6}] octahedra and [SO{sub 4}] tetrahedra with increasing temperature. Fitting of the measured cell volumes yields a coefficient of thermal expansion, a = a{sub 0} + a{sub 1} T, where a{sub 0} = 1.01 x 10{sup -4} K{sup -1} and a{sub 1} = -1.15 x 10{sup -7} K{sup -2}. On heating, the hydrogen bonds, O1{hor_ellipsis}D-O3, through which the (001) octahedral-tetrahedral sheets are held together, become weakened, as reflected by an increase in the D{hor_ellipsis}O1 distance and a concomitant decrease in the O3-D distance with increasing temperature. On further heating to 575 K, jarosite starts to decompose into nanocrystalline yavapaiite and hematite (as well as water vapor), a direct result of the breaking of the hydrogen bonds that hold the jarosite structure together
Dielectric Properties of the Quasi-Two-Dimensional Electron Liquid in Heterojunctions
A quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) electron liquid (EL) is formed at the interface
of a semiconductor heterojunction. For an accurate characterization of the Q2D
EL, many-body effects need to be taken into account beyond the random phase
approximation. In this theoretical work, the self-consistent static local-field
correction known as STLS is applied for the analysis of the Q2D EL. The
penetration of the charge distribution to the barrier-acting material is taken
into consideration through a variational approach. The Coulomb from factor that
describes the effective 2D interaction is rigorously treated. The longitudinal
dielectric function and the plasmon dispersion of the Q2D EL are presented for
a wide range of electron and ionized acceptor densities choosing GaAs/AlGaAs as
the physical system. Analytical expressions fitted to our results are also
