A hybrid CA-PDE Model of chlamydia trachomatis infection in the female genital tract

Chlamydia trachomatis is amongst the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the world and when left untreated, may lead to serious sequelae particularly in women such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility. Currently, most mathematical modelling in the literature regarding Chlamydia is based on time dependent differential equations. The serious pathology associated with C. trachomatis occurs when the chlamydial infection ascends to the upper genital tract. But no modelling study has investigated the important spatial aspects of the disease. In this work, we include spatiotemporal considerations of the progression of chlamydial infection in the genital tract. This novel direction is achieved using cellular automata modelling with probabilistic decision processes. In this presentation, the modelling strategy will be described, as well as its relationship with existing models and the advances in understanding that are achieved with such a model. Such an approach provides valuable insights into disease progression and will lead to experimentally testable predictions and a basis for further investigation in this area

Medical imaging environment : a multi-agent system for a computer clustering based multi-display

This paper presents a solution to minimize a problem that normally arises from the huge amount of images that a radiologist usually has to interpret. A multi-agent system that implements a multi-display for medical imaging based on computer clustering of normal personal computers is therefore described, as well as the multi-agent architecture that caters for the system evolution. An evaluation study was performed and its results are presented

The application of optical coherence tomography OCT in tissue engineering facilities offers great potential for the automated detection of defects or inhomogeneities in tissue products. This non-invasive and non-destructive measurement technique enables the high speed generation of two dimensional cross sections of tissue with micron resolution. The integration of an OCT device into a tissue production facility allows the monitoring and quality control of tissue engineering products. By the selective exclusion of tissue products with insufficient quality features a high degree in production standard is guaranteed. In a first study, OCT tomograms of artificial skin equivalents were acquired and compared with microscopic images of associated histologies. As a result, a well-defined analogy of the obtained images is presented. The most common defect in terms of hole structures that occurs due to a procedural steps could be detected. Further characteristics like the topogra phy, homogeneity and layer structure was analysed. Hence, OCT provides a powerful measurement technique to monitor the quality of tissue products in automated tissue engineering facilities

Increasing the accuracy of laser flash analysis using numerical algorithms robust to noise and systematic errors

The laser flash method is highly regarded due to its applicability to a wide temperature range, from cryogenic temperatures to the melting point of refractory metals, and to extreme environments involving radioactive or hazardous materials. Although instruments implementing this method are mostly produced on a commercial basis by major manufacturers, there is always room for improvement both in terms of experimental methods and data treatment procedures. The measurement noise, either due to the detector performance or electromagnetic interferences, presents a significant problem when accurate determination of thermal properties is desired. Noise resilience of the laser flash method is rarely mentioned in published literature; there are currently no data treatment procedures which could guarantee adequate performance under any operating conditions. In this paper, a computational framework combining finite-difference solutions of the heat conduction problem with nonlinear optimization techniques based on the use of quasi-Newton direction search and stochastic linear search with the Wolfe conditions is presented. The application of this framework to data with varying level of noise is considered. Finally, cross-verification and validation using an external standard, a commercial and an in-house built laser flash instrument are presented. The open-source software implementing the described computational method is benchmarked against its industrial counterpart.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure
