    A frequency-independent boundary element method for scattering by two-dimensional screens and apertures

    We propose and analyse a hybrid numerical-asymptotic hphp boundary element method for time-harmonic scattering of an incident plane wave by an arbitrary collinear array of sound-soft two-dimensional screens. Our method uses an approximation space enriched with oscillatory basis functions, chosen to capture the high frequency asymptotics of the solution. Our numerical results suggest that fi�xed accuracy can be achieved at arbitrarily high frequencies with a frequency-independent computational cost. Our analysis does not capture this observed behaviour completely, but we provide a rigorous frequency-explicit error analysis which proves that the method converges exponentially as the number of degrees of freedom NN increases, and that to achieve any desired accuracy it is sufficient to increase NN in proportion to the square of the logarithm of the frequency as the frequency increases (standard boundary element methods require NN to increase at least linearly with frequency to retain accuracy). We also show how our method can be applied to the complementary "breakwater" problem of propagation through an aperture in an infinite sound-hard screen

    When mobile handsets are making a call, a measurement report is sent to the serving base station periodically which includes the signal strengths to the base station and the next six strongest signals of the surrounding base stations. Motorola asked the Study Group if it was possible to say whether we could use this information to infer if phone calls occur in clusters and if it was possible to determine the locations, size and other features of these clusters. The Study Group found clusters in 'signal space,' that is, handsets reporting similar signal strengths with the same base stations and explored methods of locating these clusters geographically

    This interdisciplinary study focuses on the perception and verbalization of messages conveyed through instrumental music, soundscapes, and contemporary paintings. International young-adult university students learning German participated in a series of experiments conducted at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany. To incorporate globalization and cultural difference into this analysis, the author compared the reactions of Western and Asian participants to auditory and visual stimuli. This paper explores the concepts of mixed media, cross-sensory coupling, and esthetic synesthesia, and throws new light on the contribution of cross-sensory coupling to verbalization and to long-term memory processes, from encoding to retrieval. In addition, the author demonstrates how intercultural communication is based upon universal emotions aroused by contemporary paintings, instrumental music and soundscapes

    The electron-phonon interaction in a two dimensional electron gas

    At low temperatures the predominant energy loss mechanism for a Joule-heated two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) is by acoustic phonon emission. By very accurately measuring the temperature gradient developed along the silicon substrate the phonon emission has been investigated as a function of electron concentration, device power, magnetic field and temperature. In zero magnetic field the results show the cut-off predicted theoretically in the maximum phonon momentum that can be emitted in the plane of the 2DEG for low electron concentrations. It is also found that the momentum of the emitted phonons perpendicular to the plane of the 2DEG is restricted by the width of the 2DEG for the high resistivity (1000 [omega]cm) substrates used. For carrier concentrations greater than 4.9 x 1016 m-2 phonon emission from an upper subband is seen. Electrical measurements indicate that the high mobility (1.2 m2 V-1 S-1) of the devices used leads to changes in the screening of scattering potentials by the electrons being important. This is also seen in the phonon emission experiments. Experiments performed in quantising magnetic fields up to 7 T show that for the powers used (0.2 uW mm-2 – 500 uW mm-2) the phonons emitted arise from Lars-Landau level scattering. Oscillations in the temperature of a thermometer situated directly opposite the middle of the 2DEG are attributed to the movement of the phonon emission to the corners of the 2DEG when the Fermi level is between Landau levels (the Quantum Hall regime). Other trends are attributed to the width of the Landau level limiting the maximum phonon energy that can be emitted. Attempts to use a stress tuned phonon filter to probe the frequency dependence of the phonon emission failed due to experimental difficulties

    Receptor protein tyrosine kinase EphB4 is up-regulated in colon cancer

    BACKGROUND: We have used commercially available cDNA arrays to identify EphB4 as a gene that is up-regulated in colon cancer tissue when compared with matched normal tissue from the same patient. RESULTS: Quantitative RT-PCR analysis of the expression of the EphB4 gene has shown that its expression is increased in 82% of tumour samples when compared with the matched normal tissue from the same patient. Using immunohistochemistry and Western analysis techniques with an EphB4-specific antibody, we also show that this receptor is expressed in the epithelial cells of the tumour tissue and either not at all, or in only low levels, in the normal tissue. CONCLUSION: The results presented here supports the emerging idea that Eph receptors play a role in tumour formation and suggests that further elucidation of this signalling pathway may identify useful targets for cancer treatment therapies

    The Release of Nitric Oxide from S-Nitrosothiols Promotes Angiogenesis

    BACKGROUND: Free nitric oxide (NO) reacts with sulphydryl residues to form S-nitrosothiols, which act as NO reservoirs. We sought to determine whether thiol-preserving agents and antioxidants, such as dithiothreitol (DTT) and vitamin C, induce NO release from S-nitrosylated proteins in endothelial cell cultures to promote angiogenesis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: NO release was measured directly in cell supernatants using a Sievers NO Analyser, and in vitro angiogenesis was assessed by quantifying capillary-like tube network formation of porcine aortic endothelial cells (PAEC) on growth factor-reduced Matrigel. Incubation of PAEC with DTT or vitamin C significantly increased NO release in a concentration-dependent manner. However, the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors, L-NNA and L-NIO, had no effect on DTT- or vitamin C-induced NO release, and there was no concomitant increase in the phosphorylation of endothelial NOS at serine-1177 following DTT or vitamin C treatment. DTT and vitamin C increased capillary-like tube network formation by nine- and two-fold, respectively, and the addition of copper ions doubled the effect of vitamin C. Surprisingly, DTT maintained endothelial tube networks for up to one month under serum-free conditions, and selective inhibitors of guanylyl cyclase (ODQ) and PKG (KT-5823) blocked this, demonstrating the requirement of cyclic GMP and PKG in this process. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Both DTT and vitamin C are capable of releasing sufficient NO from S-nitrosothiols to induce capillary morphogenesis. This study provides the first evidence that increased denitrosylation leads to increased bioavailability of NO, independent of NOS activity, to promote sustained angiogenesis

    Autocrine activity of soluble Flt-1 controls endothelial cell function and angiogenesis

    Background - The negative feedback system is an important physiological regulatory mechanism controlling angiogenesis. Soluble vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor-1 (sFlt-1), acts as a potent endogenous soluble inhibitor of VEGF- and placenta growth factor (PlGF)-mediated biological function and can also form dominant-negative complexes with competent full-length VEGF receptors. Methods and results - Systemic overexpression of VEGF-A in mice resulted in significantly elevated circulating sFlt-1. In addition, stimulation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) with VEGF-A, induced a five-fold increase in sFlt-1 mRNA, a time-dependent significant increase in the release of sFlt-1 into the culture medium and activation of the flt-1 gene promoter. This response was dependent on VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) and phosphoinositide-3'-kinase signalling. siRNA-mediated knockdown of sFlt-1 in HUVEC stimulated the activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase, increased basal and VEGF-induced cell migration and enhanced endothelial tube formation on growth factor reduced Matrigel. In contrast, adenoviral overexpression of sFlt-1 suppressed phosphorylation of VEGFR-2 at tyrosine 951 and ERK-1/-2 MAPK and reduced HUVEC proliferation. Preeclampsia is associated with elevated placental and systemic sFlt-1. Phosphorylation of VEGFR-2 tyrosine 951 was greatly reduced in placenta from preeclamptic patients compared to gestationally-matched normal placenta. Conclusion - These results show that endothelial sFlt-1 expression is regulated by VEGF and acts as an autocrine regulator of endothelial cell function

    Central exclusive production of longlived gluinos at the LHC

    We examine the possibility of producing gluino pairs at the LHC via the exclusive reaction pp -> p+gluino+gluino+p in the case where the gluinos are long lived. Such long lived gluinos are possible if the scalar super-partners have large enough masses. We show that it may be possible to observe the gluinos via their conversion to R-hadron jets and measure their mass to better than 1% accuracy for masses below 350 GeV with 300/fb of data.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures.
