Spatial representation of temporal information through spike timing dependent plasticity
We suggest a mechanism based on spike time dependent plasticity (STDP) of
synapses to store, retrieve and predict temporal sequences. The mechanism is
demonstrated in a model system of simplified integrate-and-fire type neurons
densely connected by STDP synapses. All synapses are modified according to the
so-called normal STDP rule observed in various real biological synapses. After
conditioning through repeated input of a limited number of of temporal
sequences the system is able to complete the temporal sequence upon receiving
the input of a fraction of them. This is an example of effective unsupervised
learning in an biologically realistic system. We investigate the dependence of
learning success on entrainment time, system size and presence of noise.
Possible applications include learning of motor sequences, recognition and
prediction of temporal sensory information in the visual as well as the

Exciton bimolecular annihilation dynamics in supramolecular nanostructures of conjugated oligomers
We present femtosecond transient absorption measurements on -conjugated
supramolecular assemblies in a high pump fluence regime.
Oligo(\emph{p}-phenylenevinylene) monofunctionalized with
ureido-\emph{s}-triazine (MOPV) self-assembles into chiral stacks in dodecane
solution below 75C at a concentration of M. We
observe exciton bimolecular annihilation in MOPV stacks at high excitation
fluence, indicated by the fluence-dependent decay of B-exciton
spectral signatures, and by the sub-linear fluence dependence of time- and
wavelength-integrated photoluminescence (PL) intensity. These two
characteristics are much less pronounced in MOPV solution where the phase
equilibrium is shifted significantly away from supramolecular assembly,
slightly below the transition temperature. A mesoscopic rate-equation model is
applied to extract the bimolecular annihilation rate constant from the
excitation fluence dependence of transient absorption and PL signals. The
results demonstrate that the bimolecular annihilation rate is very high with a
square-root dependence in time. The exciton annihilation results from a
combination of fast exciton diffusion and resonance energy transfer. The
supramolecular nanostructures studied here have electronic properties that are
intermediate between molecular aggregates and polymeric semiconductors
Drawbacks of a Dual Systems Approach to Family Firms: Can We Expand Our Thinking?
Conceptualizing the family firm as a dual system with properties of both the family and the business has prevented the field from fully examining the nature of these firms and has biased our observations and interventions. Too narrow a focus on the contribution of subsystems leads to a stereotyping of subsystem functioning, inconsistent and inadequate analysis of interpersonal dynamics, exaggerated notions of subsystem boundaries, and an underanalysis of whole system characteristics. Dynamic instabilities induced by asymmetric influence: Prisoners' dilemma game on small-world networks
A two-dimensional small-world type network, subject to spatial prisoners'
dilemma dynamics and containing an influential node defined as a special node
with a finite density of directed random links to the other nodes in the
network, is numerically investigated. It is shown that the degree of
cooperation does not remain at a steady state level but displays a punctuated
equilibrium type behavior manifested by the existence of sudden breakdowns of
cooperation. The breakdown of cooperation is linked to an imitation of a
successful selfish strategy of the influential node. It is also found that
while the breakdown of cooperation occurs suddenly, the recovery of it requires
longer time. This recovery time may, depending on the degree of steady state
cooperation, either increase or decrease with an increasing number of long

Jacobi structures revisited
Jacobi algebroids, that is graded Lie brackets on the Grassmann algebra
associated with a vector bundle which satisfy a property similar to that of the
Jacobi brackets, are introduced. They turn out to be equivalent to generalized
Lie algebroids in the sense of Iglesias and Marrero and can be viewed also as
odd Jacobi brackets on the supermanifolds associated with the vector bundles.
Jacobi bialgebroids are defined in the same manner. A lifting procedure of
elements of this Grassmann algebra to multivector fields on the total space of
the vector bundle which preserves the corresponding brackets is developed. This
gives the possibility of associating canonically a Lie algebroid with any local
Lie algebra in the sense of Kirillov.Comment: 20 page
Egg parasitoids of the genus Trichogramma (Hymenoptera, Trichogrammatidae) in olive groves of the Mediterranean region
A survey of egg parasitoids of the genus Trichogramma (Hymenoptera, Trichogrammatidae) was carried out in olive groves in Portugal,
Greece, Egypt, and Tunisia during the years 2002–2004. Parasitoids were obtained either by exposing sentinel eggs (Sitotroga
cerealella Olivier or Ephestia kuehniella Zeller) on olive trees or by collecting eggs of lepidopterous olive pests. Parasitized egg samples
were reared separately in the laboratory for emergence of parasitoids. These were further reared in separate lines and processed by morphological
and molecular biology techniques for species characterization. The recorded fauna of Trichogramma parasitoids in olive
groves was species poor and consisted of species mainly known from the Mediterranean region. Trichogramma bourarachae Pintureau
and Babault was found in Tunisia and Egypt, T. cordubensis Vargas and Cabello, and T. euproctidis Girault in Egypt, Trichogramma
cacoeciae Marchal in Portugal, Greece, Egypt, Tunisia and Trichogramma nerudai Pintureau and Gerding in Portugal. Apart from that,
Trichogramma oleae Voegele´ and Pointel was collected in Tunisia. This species is probably not indigenous, but has established after several
releases of a French strain were made in recent years. For selected strains, the sequence of the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2)
region of rDNA was determined and deposited in the GenBank database. Differences in important biological attributes were found
among collected strains of T. bourarachae, suggesting the existence of biotypes. The results contribute to the limited knowledge on distribution
and biodiversity of the genus Trichogramma in the Mediterranean region. They can be helpful for the preservation and use of
indigenous Trichogramma species in biological control of lepidopterous pests in olive and other local crops
Explicit solution of the quantum three-body Calogero-Sutherland model
Quantum integrable systems generalizing Calogero-Sutherland systems were
introduced by Olshanetsky and Perelomov (1977). Recently, it was proved that
for systems with trigonometric potential, the series in the product of two wave
functions is a deformation of the Clebsch-Gordan series. This yields recursion
relations for the wave functions of those systems. In this note, this approach
is used to compute the explicit expressions for the three-body
Calogero-Sutherland wave functions, which are the Jack polynomials. We
conjecture that similar results are also valid for the more general
